Mexican officials are focusing on the positives in the U.S.-Mexico relationship, avoiding direct references to the presidential campaign.
In an interview with The Hill Monday, Secretary of the Economy Ildefonso Guajardo said "it's not very convenient for foreign officials" to comment on U.S. elections. He said they will instead focus on the massive economic potential of the U.S.-Mexico partnership.
"The mere fact that Mexico has become an item in the debate should be an opportunity to reinforce the U.S-Mexico relationship. In a way, underlying that reality is the fact that whatever happens in Mexico has an impact in the U.S. That in itself is good," said Guajardo.
The Mexican government has traditionally avoided commentary on foreign elections, but as Donald Trump heightened his rhetoric against immigrants and about building a border wall, several high officials took the bait.
The secretaries of Finance and Foreign Affairs called Trump "ignorant." in March, President Enrique Peña Nieto compared Trump's rhetoric to Mussolini and Hitler. And in April, Guajardo himself said Mexico would always be the United State's largest trading partner, unless "Trump wins the election."
But later that month, the Mexican federal government overhauled its diplomatic corps in the United States and unveiled a new strategy centered on improving the country's image with its northern neighbor.
"The Mexicans have mastered one narrative: economic modernization. They havent figured out how to master a narrative of political modernization in terms of democracy," said Michael McCarthy, a U.S.-Latin America relations expert at American University in Washington.

Cold hard reality
I've been saying since DJT started all of this that he can probably end the whole thing ala obama via "executive action".
Day 1. Enforce the law. Three EO's...
1. If you are here illegally, and we catch you, you're going to jail.
2. If you're here illegally, and working and we catch you, you're going to jail and so is whoever hired you.
3. If you here illegally and renting/buying an/a apartment/house and we catch you, you're going to jail and so is your land lord/mortgage holder.
Then get out of the way on the boarder. I believe that you will quickly be witness to a mass "self-deportation".
That would work if we didn’t have criminal traitors running the House & Senate. He needs to start brooming them in public right away.
Mexico has exported their poverty problem to the US.
Remember that when PAN/GOP/Fox broke the 80 year domination by the PRI/Dems in 2000, Fox ran against Clinton as much as against PRI because it is Clinton’s Treas Secretary Rubin who destroyed the Mexican economy (and sent all those immigrants north).
So Fox(leans libertarian) and Calderon(social conservative) and PAN in general still like Republicans and especially hate the Clintons. For the same reason PAN is competitive in Mexico, Republicans can be competitive with those of Mexican ancestry/culture in the US.
But it takes brains and knowledge of history to become competitive. To understand Mexican poitics, start with the Hollywood movie
FOR GREATER GLORY with Andy Garcia, Eva Longoria.
Yep (pursue).
Precisely.
No, we don’t send them jobs.
Our jobs stay here.
Our businesses expand. New jobs pop up there.
We’re about to take care of who comes here.
If a law like this was in place a few years ago, for example, a Denver bar owner wouldn't have been available to run for governor.
...but as Donald Trump heightened his rhetoric against immigrants and about building a border wall, several high officials took the bait.
...
Trump did no such thing. He’s against illegal activity and the crooks in government, here and abroad, who encourage it.
Trump isn’t even the actual nominee yet and he’s causing others to look at their evil ways.....
We can make an important step forward simply by starting to enforce the ones we already have. That can happen on Trump Day 1.
That big sucking sound south of the boarder is getting worried.
