Senator Cruz,
April 20, 2016
I wanted to write this letter to you in the hopes that you will get it and be able to read it.
I have been, and am, a supporter and admirer of yours.
You have been a staunch supporter of the constitution, conservative values, and stood (many times alone) against a GOP Establishment that has not kept faith with the conservative base of the party who electe them.
I have supported you from afar as you won offices in TExas, including your stinning victory for the US SEnate. I have supported you through these Presidential primaries and worked in my own area to help yo win Idaho. I have sent money into your campaign.
Now we have reached a stage where things are coming into focus.
I know, as an individual with the will and the stamina and dedication to run for President that you are absolutely convinced of your need to win this race.
However, reality is now showing that mathematically that victory is out of reach through the primaries.
I know you can, and that you seem willing to try and do all in your power to take the fight to the convention and somehow stop Donald Trump from getting the delegates he needs so you can fight him on the convention floor and win the nomination.
As a devout Christian, as an American who loves this nation and the Constitution, I urge you not to do so.
I believe the single worst thing that we could do, that would almost assuredly lead to a Hillary Clinton victory, is to have an ugly convention fight that ends up taking the nomination away from a man who will have earned the lfar largest share of the vote, and who will have also probably come within a hair's breatdth of winning the necessary delegates. Quite frankly, after his New York victory and depending on what happens on April 26th, I believe it very possible, perhaps even likely, that he will get to the delegates necessary before the convention in any case.
I know the GOPe and many who have had the most vile things to say about you are now hoping to use you to stop Donald Trump. Their support fo you is feigned and they will throw you to the curb the instant they can in order to retain their own power...and, in my pwn estimation, they do not care if it means Hillary Clinton being elected to do so.
I have studied your positions and your speeches and I agree with them and support them whole heartidly. But I have also studied the positions that Trump has now put out and the detail. They are very similar to your own senator. I guess the big question is whetrher we believe Donald Trump will actually follow through and implement them.
If he has the right people around him, helping him, showing him how...I believe he will.
Senator Cruz, a raucus, ugly fight at the convention will almost ensure that one or the other large segmnent of the people who voted in the GOP primaries will be very angry and we will lose many of thiir votes in the general, or worse, they will try a 3rd party run.
Either of those scenarios hands the election to Hillary Clinton or the DNC.
As a nation we absolutely CANNOT afford a 3rd Obama term or worse. The impact to the Supreme Court, to foreigh policy, to our financnes, to a continued erosion of moral values, and almost every other ccritical national interest would all be catastophic.
I plead with you sentor, be the voice of reason. Be the uniter.
You are in a unique position (and God has placed you there) to be able to do this at this time. I know it is not the way you or I envisioned you being able to do it. But it is the truth nonetheless.
Should Trump do well on April 26th and then in Indiana, I urge you to meet with Mr. Trump and be willing to set aside pride, war hatchets, and whatever is necessary to come to an accomodation between the two of you that unites the party behind what will be his candidancy.
I know this is a hard thing to consider...but in the interest of this nation I ask that you prayerfully consider this and stnad up and unite the party so we can win in November.
And then work with Mr. Trump to implement all of those good things that both of your candidacies represent, and then trust in God to turn the tide. I know He will...I know that if the policies set forth are impleneted, he will help us turn this nation around, and there is the very strong possibility that we will have 16 years of strong American leadership to do so.
Sincerely, and as a fellow American and brother in Christ,
Jeff Head

DOUBLE down
I've watched the thread and see some were eliminated for just disagreeing.
Please.
Cruz is from Canada.
You missed my point entirely, but that’s ok. Never mind.
“I believe if Cruz made the move and sought to bury the hatchet and unite...that Trump would respond very positively to it.”
I think he would. I once thought they were planning on a united ticket, but not after all the nastiness started.
Great letter, BTW! I wish Cruz would really read and consider it. Do you have any pull, or know anyone that does, so it gets the consideration it deserves? This is about saving the country, after all, and not about any one person’s career.
I didn’t see one. Just those who said they would never vote for Trump. If I’m wrong, show me one.
The race is technically on, but unless there is a huge and miraculous change, it’s over.
He’s highly like to get the 1237, there will be no second ballot.
Do the math. Cruz supporter Jeff Head did, check it out. I’ve been telling people the math for a week, it’s pretty clear. There is zero path for Cruz now, not even on the second ballot.
This is a lot of speculation on what candidate or scenario would make the Republican more electable in November. Every one could be argued without proving anything.
Trump being handed the nomination now could be the worst possible scenario. He loses out on valuable campaigning experience he could gain in the remaining states. Trump is learning from his losses how to be a better candidate. We’ve seen him make serious shifts after his Wisconsin gaffes and loss.
A contested convention might not be a “nightmare scenario.” The deals that could get cut at a contested convention could be structured in a way to make all sides happy and unite the party.
The anti-Trumpers are a factor. Can you win the general election without getting them on your side? If Trump improves himself as a candidate by campaigning through California and then throws them a bone at the convention to get their support to win the nomination, then he could emerge much stronger than if he were to be given the nomination today.
Besides, if Cruz dropped out now, Kasich would stay in, and would be in a position to consolidate the anti-Trump vote and gain delegates, possibly putting the establishment in a stronger position at the convention if Trump still doesn’t make 1237.
Jeff, I’ve read nearly every one of your election related posts, and I must say, I think you’re the most level headed Cruz supporter on Free Republic.
Even more important, you’re a person who loves this country, and can set aside your personal preference for what’s best for our nation. I can’t tell you how much I admire and appreciate that.
Thank you for gracing this forum with your presence.
“Trump is just our current RINO. Just like McCain and Romney - he is just the latest loser to send up against the Democrats.”
What a myopic view. It astounds me that such a high info American can so widely miss the mark.
A absolutely wonderful, well written letter, Jeff.
I agree with you 100%.
Have you thought of sending a copy of this letter to some of the talk show hosts with the option of reading it to their listeners? No I am not kidding. This says what many of us have come to believe.I’m sure it could turn the hearts of many toward peace and resolve at this point.
You have stood by Ted Cruz, as have many Freepers.
Never calling names, acting as a Christian should in these tense situations.
I believe in Ted. I have stood by him too.
I have been deeply grieved at the hate, anger and downright ugly comments and graphics that have been allowed to be displayed here against this fine citizen. It has been heart breaking and destructive to say the least and I’m not sure that Free Republic will ever be the same, or other fine political organizations as well.
You are right. A ugly convention will toss the ball to Hillary.
We are not sure what Donald Trump will do if elected.
But we KNOW what Hillary will do and that is put the nail in the coffin of our beloved USA.
We must do all we can do and your letter is well spoken and needs circulated.
God Bless you and God Bless America.
Polly
Thank you. I won't link back to FR due to the hate that is going on here right now with Trump supporters towards Cruz... but will most definitely circulate your letter!!! It would be counter productive to circulate your great letter only to have readers come here and hear the hate from the Trump supporters. Cruz can bury the hatchet, but if this contention and anger/hate keeps up on the other side, it will cause Trump to lose.. it goes both ways.
Did Jim really say people who support Cruz will be zotted????
NO! I saw the thread. I did not see anything like that.
Responsibility2nd if you saw something like that somewhere in the thread please provide a link. Otherwise I will assume you are just blowing smoke... again.
DITTO!!!!
“Why dont we just let the process work? Are you afraid you cant win a fair fight?”
The ‘process’ IS working, and Ted is falling further and further behind.
Trump has been winning this thing since South Carolina, if not New Hampshire. Only the tireless efforts of the GOP establishment has given this race anything but the appearance of a straight up, balanced contest.
downright ugly and counter productive to what Jeff Head has written.
This attitude will cause your man to lose!
Wonderful letter Jeff. Thank you for sharing it. The real enemy has always been Hillary and the Democrats.
If he has the right people around him, helping him, showing him how...I believe he will.
I personally believe that if it is a Trump v Hillary race, Trump will begin parroting Bernie Sanders' positions in order to cut into Democratic support... that's really his only Hail Mary chance to win, considering how many conservatives and Republicans will refuse to support him.
But getting Sanders voters out for Trump means Republicans lose the Senate and possibly the House too. And Trump is still highly likely to lose too, giving the Dems everything.
In addition, if the Dems ever see a poll with Trump actually beating Hillary, all they have to do is OK the FBI indictment and replace Hillary with someone less hated like Elizabeth Warren.
Trump has ALREADY mostly destroyed the chances of a Republican win in November. Both he and Cruz have too high negatives to win....all thanks to Trump. It's too late for a Cruz concession to repair that. At this point, even though I was a Cruz supporter, I think the only prayer for Republicans is to nominate Rubio on a late ballot. Neither Trump supporters nor Cruz supporters completely hate the guy, and he's less establishment/moderate than Kasich. And even then winning the presidency would still be a longshot. But at least the downticket wouldn't suffer as much as with Trump.
But my delegate model currently shows Trump entering the convention with 1232 delegates, just 5 short. And with over 100 unbound delegates, it's a lock that he would then win on the first ballot. This could change, but it isn't likely, especially with Cruz supports like yourself, if not Cruz, throwing in the towel already.
