Updated | A Tennessee college student has apologized and a professor is devastated after an uproar began when six nooses of different colors arranged in the order of the rainbow found on Monday hanging from a tree on the campus of Tennessees Austin Peay State University (APSU) led to confusion and anger and were called deeply disturbing and hurtful by the university presidentbut on Tuesday an investigation found the display was a class art project.
The display gained national attention after the Instagram account for the universitys chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) posted a photograph of it on Monday. The same day that the nooses appeared on campus, a transgender bathroom billsimilar to the law recently passed in North Carolina, which has led to intense scrutinyfailed in the Tennessee state legislature.
Harris says he found the nooses triggering because he is black and also has grappled with mental health issues. He adds that the display could be triggering for military veterans, many of whom attend the school because it is situated near Fort Campbell. According to a fall 2015 university report, 27 percent of undergraduate students at APSU are affiliated with the military.

Remember, 20% of Yale students are gay or bi. http://yaledailynews.com/blog/2010/02/10/one-in-four-maybe-six/
I guess this one was done w/o proper vetting. The best thing would be to name/shame and suspend or expel that student, and all students who participated.
Yup. My guess is he was making a "display" against intolerance and ended up stirring up his fellow intolerants. Oops.
Just like Iran. Sweet
It was art... an installation. That’s the ticket!
If he is black it’s okay. You can’t be a bigot if you are a minority, unless you’re Conservative.
Lololol
Works for me.
I think the best thing would be to say, “This was dumb. Sometimes college students do dumb things. Learning experiences.”
When nothing has been damaged but whiners’ tiny feelings, no consequence is realistically required.
And before the girls got up they made $500 bucks each and made some guys very happy!
I don’t know what insults me because I’ve never allowed myself to get insulted.
Someone needs to tell these kids they need to increase their class load. Obviously they have way too much free time.
Ho hum, another day, another hoax hate crime...
Academically deficient, 47%. Hmm. Maybe Mitt Romney was on to something when he said 47% of the population would never vote Republican.
Perhaps the intended message was the notion that froot loop rights are the new civil rights movement. Or some such.
Judging by the reaction, epic fail.
I’m sure there are a few people, mostly over age 30, getting useful degrees at Austin Peay. However, it looks like a large part of the student body should have learned a skill and gotten a job long ago ... and probably would have, if not for student loans and the delusion that “College is for everyone.”
