Primary Process Is Seen as in Conflict With Democracy
NY Times ^ | APRIL 9, 2016 | JEREMY W. PETERS

When it comes to nominating presidential candidates, it turns out the world’s foremost democracy is not so purely democratic.

For decades, both major parties have used a somewhat convoluted process for picking their nominees, one that involves ordinary voters in only an indirect way. As Americans flock this year to outsider candidates, the kind most hindered by these rules, they are suddenly waking up to this reality. And their confusion and anger are adding another volatile element to an election being waged over questions of fairness and equality.

In Nashville a week ago, supporters of Donald J. Trump accused Republican leaders of trying to stack the state’s delegate slate with people who were anti-Trump. The Trump campaign posted the cellphone number of the state party chairman on Twitter, leading him to be inundated with calls. Several dozen people showed up at the meeting at which delegates were being named, banged on the windows and demanded to be let in.

The first primary elections were in 1921, and the constitution does not provide for the selection of electors by popular vote either. States could choose electors and presidential candidates by whatever means the state legislature sees fit.

The US is a nation-state wherein the central government has unlimited powers.

So, we need to shoot them all (or most of them) and start over?

When you refuse to allow voters a voice, the country is dead. We are seeing both parties having establishment picking our candidates. Truly a disgusting situation for America.

We're a representative republic, moron.

We can be a republic and have fair elections. Each state hold a primary and states get to send their delegates to represent the voters desires. Having politicians who have screwed our country so badly pick our nominee is criminal. I guess you like the direction the politicians are taking our country. Disgusting!

North Korea LOL. There’s a bunch of Republics like:

Islamic Republics

Republics governed in accordance with Islamic law:

Islamic Republic of Afghanistan
Islamic Republic of Iran (since 1979)
Islamic Republic of Pakistan (since 1956)

Just because Madison came outwith his Federalist Papers doesn't contravene what the Constitution says. You are not very far off when you state: "If the majority is to be taken seriously, the Federal Government may now regulate quilting bees, clothes drives, and potluck suppers throughout the 50 States". And my argument goes along with what you stated about:“powers delegated” to the Federal Government are “few and defined,” while those of the States are “numerous and indefinite.”

What I'm saying is that the federal government is usurping its power by not going along with the wishes of the people because government knows what's best for you.

If the establishment keeps this up, I can see this country going towards a democracy. This primary is waking up the electorate and they are not happy. You want to keep the United States a republic then you better hope big changes happen or we will go full democracy. If it were to go on the ballot as a petition in November after this primary, I would say that in January we’d be a democracy. Be careful being all high and mighty over there. The populous is pissed off rightfully so.

Agreed. My point is that the federal usurpation has rendered the US a nation-state and not a republic. The barrier between federal and state government has been blown down.

However, the republican convention process is neither ‘republican’ nor democratic.

In a republic, delegates are not given secret orders, made part of secret meetings, or made party to secret agreements.

In a republic, the people of a ‘district’ send what they decide is the most honest, most capable person to a gathering with the intent that their elector/delegate will both represent them, do what is right, and do with new issues that arise what the delegate honestly thinks that common sense back home would have arrived at.

And just to be clear, in a republic the delegates are not a result of a vote on a particular nominee. They are the ones who will suggest names of worthy nominees, and they are the ones who will vote as a body for the best qualified nominee brought forward.

So true. I get sick of everyone using the word “Democracy” when they refer to American Government. The Athenians knew how vile and evil “democracy” was——all group-think and tyranny of the majority over the Individual. With Individualism (American Justice), you can never deny the Natural Rights from God——for the collective “good”-—but they have STRIPPED Natural Law and God’s Law (banned) from our Constitution which destroyed Rule of Law for Rule of Man/oligarchy.

Justice Holmes literally destroyed the “Justice” system-—removed virtue from our “Justice” System when “Justice” is the Queen of Virtue, (Destroyed the Word “Justice” and “Love” and “Right” etc. so they could literally flip Good and Evil and remove Reason, Science and Logic (Natural Law) from the minds of our children. Right Reason can never be removed from a Just Law-—now we have irrational arbitrary unconstitutional “law”. We have a socialist unconstitutional, elite-controlled, system of slavery now (Rule of Oligarchy and King).. And it isn’t even a Democracy or a Republic anymore.

But Truth does not matter in such an arbitrary, irrational, evil “system”. In Fact, Truth (God/Individualism/Natural Rights) is ALWAYS banned, because Truth will set us Free.
