BUTTE Police arrested retired Navy SEAL Rob O'Neill -- who is credited with shooting al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden -- for driving under the influence about 2:30 a.m. Friday, according to the Butte-Silver Bow County sheriff's department
O'Neill was found sleeping in a 2005 Nissan Sentra at a Town Pump. The vehicle was running and the back-up lights were on, said Undersheriff George Skuletich.
Officers woke him up by opening the car door. They said he appeared under the influence -- confused and somewhat lethargic. He failed a horizontal gaze test at the scene, and other related sobriety tests at the jail.
O'Neill, 39, refused a Breathalyzer test. He was released from jail at 4:26 a.m. on a $685 bond. The charge is DUI, first offense, a misdemeanor.
Police came to the scene after five to six customers at the convenience store reported a man sleeping in the car.
According to the report, O'Neill said he had one drink, then denied it. He also said he may have taken Ambien, a prescription drug most often used to treat insomnia. O'Neill told authorities he had flown into Butte from overseas, but police weren't clear on the exact country.
O'Neill's 40th birthday party, open to the public, has been in the works for some time, and is planned Saturday at The Depot on South Arizona Street.
Robert O'Neill, 38, told The Washington Post in an interview in 2014 that he fired the two shots that killed bin Laden.
One current and one former SEAL confirmed to The Associated Press that O'Neill was long known to have fired the shots that killed the leader of the international terror group responsible for the Sept. 11 attacks.
ONeill told the Post he decided to publicize his role after becoming certain that his identity would soon be leaked. Formerly a tightly held secret, the information became widely known in military circles and among members of Congress and at least two press organizations, he said.
O'Neill was born and raised in Butte.
Yep and they get busted too........fortunately for them, they chose to keep their personal lives to themselves and stayed in the background rather than write books and make appearances on FOX.......
Being a celebrity has its consequences if you violate the terms of our laws......How many times have folks here excoriated famous liberals for being busted for DUI's?
I'll give you one, check out Abby Wambach and her recent DUI threads and see the grief she received from people here as well as her arrest on all the MSM outlets including FOX..........
You can't have it both ways bro.........
“If I had been that police officer...”
I think there’s quite a few who would have done as you suggested. I would’ve. Probably many more in past years would’ve too, and I know for a fact that those sorts still exist in small towns around the country.
Yes don’t we know it. Hard fighting, hard drinking warriors. Wouldn’t have them any other way. Plus he wasn’t even driving. More like SUI sleeping under the influence.
Those days are long gone and rightfully so.......Alcohol and driving don't mix and the fatalities occurring each and every day due to that mix substantiate the penalties.......
Nobody is exempt from our laws while being behind the wheel of a car when intoxicated..........
Remember Jeff,
today it is critical that we denigrate and demoralize our warrior class. Didn’t you get the memo?
Just curious, if that individual were merely a drunk VietNam veteran, would you extend the same courtesy?
I wonder if they put him into lockup for a couple hours before he got out on bail... and if any other punks in there gave him any crap (”hey old white man, welcome to our world!”). If so, I would have liked to be a fly on the wall for that one.
The issue here could be that his engine was running - even if it was to keep him warm.

I think if I were the cop and knew who he was, Id go long out of my way to see he wasnt arrested and to make sure wasnt a danger to himself or others.

Not only that, any call in with license number requires a need to do so and that is on record.
Exactly my thought. AND why did they not hauled him off alive when they had the chance and that would have been a huge pray to collect. But you see he had been dead for over a decade ago, according to former Pakistani PM, who herself then also was killed. GWB stopped haunting him down when HE was President. Then you have Biteme killed all the Seals so they couldn’t sing. When you see how the sleazy GOP trying to stop Donald Trump gives me fodder to say that the OSB operation was a total fake stunt. And the O’Neil should have been court marshaled for “singing”. He was sent out from the W.Hut trying to make it real!!!
Disregard that. I thought lying was about not driving or something. About Osama, that’s probably true.
And despite the conspiracies, it would be very tough to get a team of infantry of any sort to pretend about something like that.
I think he did shoot Osama. Also you can tell because everyone got their panties in a wad over him coming out and saying it.
“Being a celebrity has its consequences if you violate the terms of our laws......How many times have folks here excoriated famous liberals for being busted for DUI’s?”
Well, except in this case his name was put out there by others...not by him. He wasn’t a “celebrity” he was ordered out front.
Oh really? By whom? He presented himself on his own to capitalize on his achievement and was in fact criticized by his fellow seals.
O'Neill's statements resulted in criticism by fellow Navy SEALs. Rear Admiral Brian Losey and Force Master Chief Michael Magaraci issued a public statement,
A critical tenant [sic] of our ethos is "I do not advertise the nature of my work, nor seek recognition for my actions."[15]
Years ago he WOULD have been given a pass and allowed to sleep it off. Unfortunately, too many drunks have killed too many people on the highways and thus local LEO's have no choice but to arrest and ticket individuals such as Rob O'Neill...
Like it or not, it is what it is.........
Flying into Butte from just about anywhere adds at least 6-10 hours to your trip as Butte only has a couple of flights a day. If you fly in internationally you are talking at least 24-30 hours to get there and likely it will take 40-48 hours. I know I've done it.
The last and only night flight comes into town at about 11:30 pm.So after collecting his baggage and picking up a car from the airport lot, that doesn't charge a fee, he probably decided to go uptown to have a few. No matter what bar he walked into in Butte everyone in the joint would have bought him a drink or two etc..
The bars in Montana can stay open as long as 2:00am so I'm thinking he got out of wherever he was and quickly realized he could not drive and pulled into the Town Pump which is only a few blocks from the uptown bar district. As anyone who has flied internationally knows, the airlines give out routinely to help the passengers to sleep so its not surprising that he may have taken an Ambian.
The Sheriff in Butte is facing his first reelection bid. There is no doubt in my mind that the calculation was made how this would help his election chanches, in my estimation he made a mistake.
News flash....no faster way to kill a military career than with booze.
That is some pukey cop.
He better watch his back.
Deep Six that Sheriff on Election Day!
Butte MT probably doesn’t have many non white men. It’s not very large town, either. Used to be, but the copper mine got shut down.
