BUTTE Police arrested retired Navy SEAL Rob O'Neill -- who is credited with shooting al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden -- for driving under the influence about 2:30 a.m. Friday, according to the Butte-Silver Bow County sheriff's department
O'Neill was found sleeping in a 2005 Nissan Sentra at a Town Pump. The vehicle was running and the back-up lights were on, said Undersheriff George Skuletich.
Officers woke him up by opening the car door. They said he appeared under the influence -- confused and somewhat lethargic. He failed a horizontal gaze test at the scene, and other related sobriety tests at the jail.
O'Neill, 39, refused a Breathalyzer test. He was released from jail at 4:26 a.m. on a $685 bond. The charge is DUI, first offense, a misdemeanor.
Police came to the scene after five to six customers at the convenience store reported a man sleeping in the car.
According to the report, O'Neill said he had one drink, then denied it. He also said he may have taken Ambien, a prescription drug most often used to treat insomnia. O'Neill told authorities he had flown into Butte from overseas, but police weren't clear on the exact country.
O'Neill's 40th birthday party, open to the public, has been in the works for some time, and is planned Saturday at The Depot on South Arizona Street.
Robert O'Neill, 38, told The Washington Post in an interview in 2014 that he fired the two shots that killed bin Laden.
One current and one former SEAL confirmed to The Associated Press that O'Neill was long known to have fired the shots that killed the leader of the international terror group responsible for the Sept. 11 attacks.
ONeill told the Post he decided to publicize his role after becoming certain that his identity would soon be leaked. Formerly a tightly held secret, the information became widely known in military circles and among members of Congress and at least two press organizations, he said.
O'Neill was born and raised in Butte.
News flash...Seals get drunk. #$%$ this piece of crap reporting on this.
But....if he was an illegal alien......no charges and let go
DWA? Driving while asleep? He stopped to sober up. Been there done that. I had to, I was doing 20mph on the highway.
This is news? Of course he should not be DWI, but I’m always surprised he has not yet been ‘jihaded’ by some Lone Wolf.
That would be news, albeit most unwelcome.
“But....if he was an illegal alien......no charges and let go.”
I’m so sick of this bullshit. Anything to get a click or attract attention. He wasn’t even DRIVING drunk. He was just sitting there...how is that driving drunk? The cops that didn’t just put him in their cruiser, drive him home should have all STFU and not even called it in. #$%& this.
Alcohol and Ambien. This man needs our prayers.
I wonder if he was at the M&M Club. There are some great bars in Butte.
PTSD. I’d be real surprised if he wasn’t having a bit of difficulty readjusting to civilian life.
“News flash...Seals get drunk.”
Exactly. More of the neo puritanical left. Just say “no”.
NEVER believed his story for one second. Something in his looks not trustworthy. Can’t explain it saw same with Jimmy Swaggart first time I saw him on TV 33 years ago !!!
He got in his car and started it up.
Then realized he may be over the limit of alchol in his body to drive.
So he went to sleep.
Unfortunately he forgot to turn off the car.
That’s my story for him and I’m sticking to it!
Some people just earn a pass. This guy has earned a few. I think if I were the cop and knew who he was, I’d go long out of my way to see he wasn’t arrested and to make sure wasn’t a danger to himself or others.
He’s lucky it didn’t take off in reverse when he fell asleep, from the sound of it.
...don’t forget the neo puritanical right. I’m tired of both.
oh geez Rob , you know better than to pull s#it like this
Having seen neither pics of a dead Osama, nor the purported "burial at sea," I've wondered about that myself.
If true at face value, alcohol black outs in a running vehicle at age 40 is a real problem.
Some states have ridicules laws. Friend was busted in WY for DUI. He was arrested, sleeping in the back of his pickup, on his own property, engine off and cold.
Convicted.
I’m in favor of very harsh punishment for DUI - but parked is not ‘driving’.
Drunk while asleep in a car? Could be a problem if the engine was running actually. Probably to keep warm I guess, but if the engine is running and the car is not on his own private property, he could have a problem.
