Wisconsin meltdown puts Trump on track for convention fight [Manafort threatening to quit]
Politico ^ | 04/06/2016 | Eli Stokols

The relevant part of the article:

Behind the scenes, Lewandowski is fighting to preserve his own power and to box out Paul Manafort, who was hired last month to lead the campaign's delegate corralling effort. "Corey and his people know the knives are out for them," said one source close to the campaign, referring to Manafort as a "pretty experienced in-fighter."

On Saturday, Lewandowski went as far as to fire a young operative named James Baker, who'd been recently put in charge of its Colorado campaign--he'd arrived in the state less than 48 hours earlier--because he'd been communicating with Manafort after Lewandowski instructed him not to do so, two sources with direct knowledge of the situation confirmed.

Manafort is scheduled to meet with Trump in New York Wednesday morning and likely to threaten to quit if he doesn't see more cooperation, according to one source. "If Manafort walks, this thing comes apart," they said. "And some of the people close to him are ready to walk."

The landslide loss in Wisconsin could finally prompt Trump to make changes in the campaign structure, even if Lewandowski retains his title as campaign manager. "This campaign has outgrown the team," one high-level Trump supporter said. "Hopefully this wakes up the candidate, because Lewandowski can't handle it from here."

It's Politico, so I know many will discount it as tabloid trash, but Manafort is the only guy who understands the delegate math. If he walks, it's not going to turn out well for Trump.

I guess “The Donald” did not get great people to run his campaign...

I'd guess a bit differently.

If Trump is such a hot shot “Art of the Deal” power broker who can manipulate movers and shakers; he must have lost his touch.

Blast “Teddy Bear” all you want for colluding with the GOP-e; but the fact is - that worked. I sorta feel sorry for the campaign staffers. They have to spend all their time and energy cleaning up the messes Trump makes.

Donald is 8-2 in the last 10 primaries. He has a huge lead in delegates and popular vote. He will crush Ted in NY. But his campaign is falling apart because he lost WI?

Wasn't the margin pretty much what the pundits were predicting? I'd guess it got goosed a little by what little is left of the Kasich voters defecting to Cruz.

Biggest surprise of the night, I think, was Kasich barely broke 14% in a three-way race with a demographic which should have been closely tailored to him.

Bottom line is that the GOPe's LEAST two favorite candidates collected over 84% between them.

Actually, I think his people ARE great. It’s just they have to work with a boss who’s a bully with a bad attitude who flip-flops on a daily basis.

I don’t get it either

Especially when Trump wasn’t suppose to win WI, the belly of the Establishment Beast

[Blast “Teddy Bear” all you want for colluding with the GOP-e; but the fact is - that worked. ]

It “worked” because Cruz is GOPe stooge himself, so it’s a natural fit.

And if Trump had aligned himself with the Establishment, Cruzers would be howling left and right that Trump is a sellout and the claims that he’s “not conservative” would have been amplified 10-fold!

So, apparently the agreed upon word for the anti-Trump forces today is “MELTDOWN.”

If it’s a meltdown to have over 250 Delegates going into New York...okay, then a meltdown it is!

Precisely. Trump will get his 1237. The math works easily on his favor.

Every campaign goes though phases of growth as the election cycle moves forward...

Let’s see if Trump can make the transition from a business type strategy to a pure political strategy concerning his campaign...

Should be interesting...

Guys like Manafort are good at being focused on what they do well, and no one argues that Manafort is good at it. If Trump wants to win, he has to keep the best talent available for these data and tactical positions. He can’t be William Howard Taft.

When Perot ran in 1992, he wisely picked up Pat Caddell and Ed Rollins, men of provedn talent from each party. Ultimately, he unwisely fired them. They were willing to tell him things he didn’t want to hear.

Trump needs such men around him now.

If this story is accurate, and if Trump allows Manafort to leave then I will be convinced he's not serious about winning.

This thing looks like its headed to the convention, and whether Trump wins or loses depends upon his rapport with the delegates. Ranting and making unsubstantiated charges after his loss last night strikes me as unhelpful in this regard and decidedly unserious.
