Donald Trump continued his war with party bosses Sunday, once again saying that he wouldnt rule out a third-party run if he failed to secure the GOP nomination and demanding that rival John Kasich drop out of the race.
Were going to have to see how I was treated. Im going to have to see how I was treated. Very simple, Trump said on Fox News Sunday when asked if he would categorically rule out running as a third-party independent candidate if he failed to win his partys nomination. Its not a question of win or lose. Its a question of treatment. I want to be treated fair.
The comments came just days after Trump, Kasich and Ted Cruz backed out of pledges to support the GOPs eventual nominee. Following the walk-backs, Trump met privately with Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus in an apparent effort to smooth things over, but on Sunday, the hot-and-cold relationship appeared on the verge of fracturing once again.
Those kinds of comments, I think, have consequences, Priebus said on ABCs This Week of Trumps latest remarks. When you make those kinds of comments, and you want people to fall in line for you, it makes it more difficult.
In yet another interview, Priebus admitted he wasnt sure whether he felt the former businessman was the partys best candidate.
I dont know, Priebus said on NBCs Meet the Press. Listen, I dont worry about who is the strongest candidate.
Further suggesting Trump was undeterred by the criticism were demands he made during a rally in Wisconsin whose pivotal primary on Tuesday will put for up grabs another 96 delegates that Kasich drop out of the GOP race.

So you understand how ridiculous it would be for any Trump supporter to argue that anyone should support Trump to prevent Hillary from being elected - since Trump supporters quite regularly proclaim that if Trump is not the nominee, not only will they not vote for the GOP nominee for president, but many will vote for Dems at all levels. It seems that Trump supporters are fine with Hillary winning and having a Dem Congress if Trump is not the nominee, but become scandalized that others would be fine with Hillary winning and having a GOP congress if Trump does get the nomination.
The GOPe THINKS they are going to get Slick Willie’s nagging, screeching wife.
But this could backfire and they could end up Feeling the Bern instead.
Now watching THAT could be FUN!!
Go away Trump, go run 3rd party.
There are too many sore loser laws on the books for him to do this now that he’s run as a Republicans. Trump knows he can’t mount a real 3rd party bid at this point, he is just lying/bluffing/BSing - as usual.
Too bad the RNC didn’t call his bluff from day one. Trump has no path to a general election victory and simply used the Republican Part to boost his brand. So I hope the orange face clown with raccoon eyes goes away. At least lay off the spray tanner, he might not look so ridiculous.
Not picking someone who gets far and away the most votes is a big FU to the plurality of voters who support Trump, and will be the death of the GOP. It just shows how much the party despises the voters. I’ve voted solid GOP for 36 years but this is their last chance as far as I’m concerned. And I’m not alone.
No one will be mathematically eliminated until someone gets the 1237 delegates.
If no-one gets that its a whole new ball game, he can fight for them like everyone else does.
Trump should have read the rules before he committed to them, as if his commitments mean ANYTHING anyway.
Indeed. But only for Republicans. The Democrats are as cohesive as ever.
I will offer one observation about the three who backed out however. Trump refused to make the pledge in the first place. Then he made it when it seemed useful to him and backed out when it did not. Cruz and Kasich waivered only as to Trump. I don’t think they’d refuse to support each other. But Trump won’t support anyone except himself, which suggests that he really doesn’t have any allegience to the Party. He’s basically a parasite who wants the benefits of party affiliation without offering anything in exchange.
The US Constitution spells out who can run for Federal office and what qualifications are for them. It is the Supreme law and nothing a state adds as a limiting qualification is valid.
So your Sore Loser laws can apply to State elections but not federal where the US Const controls.
Why not? Trump could have run as a democrat with similar results. He believes National Security, Education, and Healthcare are the top three roles for the federal government.
I don’t think so.
He’s a builder. He likes to see ACTUAL results.
He’d see a viable 3rd party as an actual result.
I think you have it exactly backwards.
Many lifetime republicans are ready to jump ship for good. They are that disgusted with the Republican party.
They have to gather signatures for petitions, which wouldn't be a problem for Trump from a numbers standpoint; but having to develop teams to navigate all 50 states would be tricky to ramp up in a few months.
The key date to watch is May 9th. That's the deadline to get on the Texas ballot; a state that would seemingly be crucial to a Trump Independent campaign.
Change your screen name. That word actually means something.
If Cruz is really devoted to stopping Hillary, HE’s the one who should drop out and throw his support to Trump.
But because he and his supporters are in the middle of a temper tantrum, he won’t. At this time, they hate Trump more than they love their country.
Yes, He should focus on getting ballot access of some variety in all 50 states. He’d need a team of lawyers devoted to each large state, and a smaller group for smaller states.
I believe he’s a former Reform Party member, and their platform is already supportive of most everything he stands for.
He could easily assume the mantle of the Reform Party.
He should establish 50 state teams to run candidates in every House and Senate seat to the best of their ability.
Excellent, good to hear that, tell the orange faced buffoon to go run 3rd party again. The faster he exits the GOP and takes his clown show elsewhere, the better.
Hillary appreciates your support.
Big frigging deal.
Anyone except Trump is identical to Hillary in the long run. Goodbye USA, goodbye conservatism in the long run.
The only difference is the self-righteous preening of the local twits and who gets blamed for it.
End of story.
She’ll win anyway against anything the republicats put up.
Do you honestly think a liberal bush, a liberal ryan, or even a Canadian Texan can beat Hillary once the media starts up with Queen Hillary music?
Several candidates already said they won’t support Trump if he wins the nomination. So are they allowed to break the pledge but not Trump. The rules of the pledge was to treat him fairly. They already broke those rules.
