Donald Trump’s Giant Convention Con
Politico ^ | 3/26/2016 | Mickey Edwards

Donald Trump is likely on the verge of losing the Republican primary, falling short of the number of delegates required to win the presidential nomination. But, as bullies are wont to do, Trump is now trying desperately to change the rules—to argue that the nomination should go not to the candidate who wins 1,237 delegates but to whoever comes closest.

What’s wrong with that argument? Electing a U.S. president is not a schoolyard game, where goalposts change when bullies whine. There’s a reason a candidate has to make it to 1,237 votes to win the nomination. Each party’s goal is to put forth a nominee whom the party’s members, represented by their elected delegates, believe will best reflect the party’s collective judgment—a determination possible only when the level of support is clear and convincing. That’s why both parties set a benchmark, the political equivalent of the tape at the finishing line of a race, sufficient to establish the party’s preference. In a hundred-yard dash, a runner who beats the others but who can only manage 95 yards doesn’t go home with a medal.

At the convention this summer, assuming that none of Trump’s primary opponents will have reached that magic number either, the delegates will vote on who they think best represents the Republican Party until a single candidate does receive the necessary votes. It is this candidate, the one who is able actually to cross the finish line, who will win the right to become the party’s nominee. That person could be Trump, but it probably won’t be.

My understanding is that the delegates vote as pledged...the first round of voting. If nobody wins a majority then the delegates can vote again in other rounds not pledged until somebody has a majority. There will likely be deals made. Trump and Cruz will have the most power in the process. I suspect Trump will win during this horse trading but I am not certain. Seems a fantasy of the elites that they can convince the delegates to go for some schmuck.

You again did not address the question.

Again you were proved wrong, but you out false information and you were corrected.
Now will you retract your nonsense post and state you were wrong or did not know about what you posted?

BTW I will raise this on other threads too and that way others can see what crap and lies you are posting seeing as you fail to address the question.

This has been a charade of an primary election. The race is such a lopsided win for Trump that it’s ludicrous to suggest otherwise. We are stuck with a non-winner trying to steal delegates from a winner that’s way out in front on so many levels and issues.

Team Cruz is efficient in weaseling out wins in a few caucus states known for their oddball and malleable vote counting methods.
Cruz won:
Virgin Islands by 30 votes
Wyoming by 480 votes
Alaska by 600 votes
Maine by 2,500.

Here are the rounded total votes Cruz won in his nine winning states.

Wyoming 620 people
Virgin Isl 200 people
Alaska 8,400
Maine 8,500
Kansas 35,000
Iowa 52,000
Utah 122,00
Okie 158,000
He won eight states totaling 385,000 votes.
If it wasn’t for Texas, he’d have a pile of beans.

Ted’s lackluster Texas win, Texas 1,239,393.
Cruz’s winning votes in nine states are 1,724,000.
Cruz won 9 states with 1,724,000 votes

Trump won 21 states, and nearly all the states were won by tens or hundreds of thousands of votes. The millions that have attended his rallies have voted.
Marianas (343 people)
Hawaii 6K
Vermont 20K
Nevada 35K
Kentucky 83K
N. H. 101K
Louisiana 125K
Arkansas 133K
Mississipi 191K
South Car 241K
Arizona 250K
Mass. 311K
Tenn. 333K
Virginia 356K
AlaBama. 372K
Missouri 382K
N. Carol 458K
Michig. 483K
Georgia 503K
Illinois 557K
FLorida 1,079,741

Trump won 21 states with 6,020,000 votes

Cruz’s only way to prevail now is by chicanery and fraud, but then that’s just how he began this campaign.

Well whatever the outcome at least Trump has exposed the GOPe/RepubliCONS as truly being no more than the flaccid right side of the demoRAT party. Ryan will at least be gone, McCONell hopefully will be gone, McCampaign will at least be gone. And hopefully we can all resurrect the Republican party from the ashes Trumnp has left of it!

If Trump loses at the Con I won’t blame him. And I won’t support the GOP ever again. I could care less if anyone other than Trump is running - I see no difference between Clinton and the GOPe. She was for the same wars and trade policies the GOPe were for under Bush and don’t give me that line about abortion - the GOPe just pretends it is anti-abortion.

Yes, but our elected representatives have a moral duty to represent us, not rule against us! The point of a representative republic, is not to select tyrants who think they have the right, once elected, to forever do as they please, and as well, doing whatever they need to do to maintain themselves in power in perpetuity.

We have had contested conventions just about every time we don’t have an incumbent. It does not ruin the party. That rule has been in effect ever since Lincoln—its founding .I am sure a few del. would change their vote if one is just short of the number. Eisenhower/Taft—taft was ahead and Ike stole the election on second ballot Thenks to Earl Warren. Goldwater was a contested conv. Nixon/Reagan was contested. Ford/Reagan was contested. Bush 41 withdrew once he realized Reagan had the nomination in the bag. Just enforce the rules we have (maybe the one that was only adapted to keep Rand nomination from coming to the floor and never should have been.

“If Trump doesn’t have a clear lead (as in a few votes short of the magic number, which I don’t know), I do think Cruz will be the smarter-choice compromise candidate, in that he is both an outsider and very conservative.”

It’s no longer real to me that Cruz is an outsider or very conservative, but I will agree that he would be a legitimate and acceptable choice, IF he arrives at the convention with a delegate total that’s somewhere in the same ballpark as Trump’s.

If Cruz arrives at the convention with a delegate total that is significantly less than Trump, it’s going to be hard to sell him as a legitimate choice for nominee. I’m not saying it can’t be done, but it’ll be very tough.

And this time, they'll use it to put the establishment guy in, which is fine. I and millions like me will then go ahead and vote third party or write Trump in and ignore the rest of the ballot, period. Screw the GOP. They've stabbed us in the back far too long. I won't be party to that any longer.

[A contested Convention will destroy the GOP completely. The GOP has done enough to destroy itself, and this will just see the whole thing collapse. If a contested Convention occurs, I’ll be writing Trump in, and won’t vote for another damned GOP candidate on this ticket, or any other the rest of my life]

Yet, you expect the 70% of the party that doesn’t want Trump to hold their noses and support your guy, even though he has been trying as hard as he can to alienate no in the Trump camp instead of moving to the party? Sorry, Trump is a fraud, and the GOP should not hand him the nomination if he fails to reach 1,237. Trump doesn’t seem too worried about Hillary, as his juvenile and divisive actions help no one but her.

If they do that it is against present party rules and I will go 3rd party too. I am a Cruz supporter, but only so far—no GOP rigged elections

I *totally* agree with you. If the sh!ts at the RNC cram another candidate down our throats, it’s write-in for Trump and never another Republican vote for the rest of my days. I have absolutely HAD IT with this Party!
