Trumped again: The diabolical GOP frontrunner slimes Cruz, shames Fox & controls the news cycle
Salon ^ | March 27, 2016 | ANDREW O'HEHIR

When is a news story not a news story? That question hung in the air much of the day on Friday, as the major cable news networks laboriously steered around any direct reference to the political bombshell that had set social media aflame since the small hours. Once again the mainstream media had been Trumped, made to look floundering and foolish by the Republican clown-prince even as it wrestled with one of the biggest news days of the year. Belgian authorities had apparently captured a leading suspect in the Brussels attacks, and the United States military had apparently killed an ISIS leader in Syria. But for at least half the day, those headlines felt like footnotes to the hot topic TV news wouldn’t even touch.

With no apparent sense of irony, Fox News sought to recast itself as a sober, responsible news organization, whose guests and commentators are deeply concerned about the toxic nature of American political discourse. During the 11 a.m. hour of Fox’s “Happening Now,” an entire group of panelists earnestly embraced Hillary Clinton’s recent complaint that moderate, centrist, reasonable voices had been excluded from public debate and political media, and that this was harming democracy. The old saw about putting lipstick on a pig doesn’t begin to capture it. Friday’s display of cable-news hypocrisy and paralysis, as the talking heads danced along the edges of the unmentionable story everyone in the real world was talking about, was more bizarre and more far-reaching than that.

“I wish we had had a real campaign with ideas,”

Don’t you think that by promising to stop illegal immigration, and making sure that trade deals are good for the US, Trump is doing exactly that?

“If I were still supporting Cruz, considering the people now supporting him,”

I understand your point and I do agree on the angle but
there are a lot of people that support Cruz that are not
establishment. And the ones that are just recently signed on
which gives credence to your theory.
As far as the media covering up his scandals. Where? Do you
mean like their coverup of the Hillary scandals? I don’t
think they would go that far to protect Cruz.
If Cruz or Trump gets the nomination it will probably be
with the guarantee that the GOPe would pick his VP. Like they did
with Reagan. However that may not work with Trump, and that
is a plus for him. I hope Cruz wins but I wouldn’t mind in
the least if Trump won. Honestly.

Cruz could hire Hillary, she was good at controlling Bill’s Bimbo eruptions.

The author’s a dweeb.

Over and over and over it’s been said that this is Rubio’s Revenge. But nobody wants to admit it. Why is it so implausible?

One only has to google ;Rubio mistresses; to see the story was peddled from Dec 2015 to the big reveal on March 6 2016. (Florida primary being March 15) One of the mistresses allegedly being a Homeland Security lobbyist. Were all of these folks just supposed to go away?

Maybe somebody should be asking who was pushing the Rubio stories? and then they’d have the answer as to why the Cruz mistresses story came out 10 days after the Florida primary.

No, you are wrong.Even if Hitlery is the President, and GOP looses some house and Senate seats, it’s not over for them. They will still retain power and work with the Dems as the faithful opposition party in dismantling America.

That didn’t happen, and it probably wouldn’t have worked. One measure of Trump’s Mephistophelean ability to manipulate the news cycle is that the Enquirer story didn’t hit until now, when Rubio is toast and Trump is the only candidate who stands to benefit from the destruction of Cruz’s image as squeaky-clean Christian family man. But Trump’s dark powers go far beyond dirty tricks and shrewd timing, and no one has yet discovered an effective counterspell. Hillary Clinton’s strategists can talk all they want to about their terrific poll numbers and Trump’s huge negatives among women and voters of color and all the rest of it. But Jeb Bush and Rubio and Cruz and those other people all thought the laws of political physics were on their side too. When you do battle with the Necromancer, those laws are suspended and strange things happen.

This tells me all I need to know - the left /establishment is afraid Trump will rip Clinton to shreds in ways they can't even guess at. Do it Trump!

In order to attempt to claim Salon is supporting Cruz, you will first have to get the dozens of anti-Cruz Salon articles posted here by Trump supporters deleted. Then you may have a shot at looking believable.

That was before they started using him to prevent Trump from getting 1237 delegates so they could have a brokered convention and nominate Paul Rino.

"I wish we had had a real campaign with ideas"

Gee, I guess building a wall and deporting illegals is not a real idea. Nor preventing the importation of thousands of Jihadis.

What about that part where we start doing fair trade deals? Or, making our so-called allies pay their fair share of the freight?

If your contention is that Trump has not brought multiple, important ideas to this campaign then you are the one that needs to tune out Honey Boo Boo and start paying attention.

I wasn’t a Cruz fan but I’d vote for him. Trump is appealing to the trash TV Honey BooBoo crowd. But apparently that crowd is larger than anybody knew.

I was a Cruz fan but switched to Trump because of people who make statements like the above. Schadenfreude, Honey Boo Boo

This article is spot on. This hate-filled writer describes Trump’s strategies, tactics and outcomes to perfection. However, he is so consumed with his hatred of Trump he completely misses what motivates and drives Trump.

He is almost right when he says “Although Trump appears to be both ignorant and stupid, and to revel in those qualities, his clowning has a cruel precision and carries hints of dark genius.”

The truth is that Trump is aware and smart. And what the writer sees as “clowning” is instead cunningness with deadly precision and an enlightening genius.

Trump is Shrugging and I am loving every minute of it.

Thank you for sharing this article. It is quite motivating.
