A pleasant and caring man, one who reveled in his mostly modest playing career in the big leagues, his receded -- not receding -- hairline and, it seemed, all facets and phases of his decades on the planet, has left us behind, behind and smiling. Joe Garagiola, a most entertaining, engaging and convivial sort, has died, bringing to an end a full, rich life and leaving the game without one its most enduring personalities, an energetic crusader and folksy humorist.

“The great ones are leaving.”

Right.

It seems those that represent a bygone era that has passed, are slowly passing themselves.

Catchers are the most under-rated players on any major league baseball team.

I was a relief pitcher till aged 19

Had Two pitches

Fast

Wild

My catcher was my bodyguard cause I got charged a lot and at 6 foot 4 and 175-180 I had plenty arm but not brawn

My catcher was an Italian like Joe with no neck

He saved my ass plenty

Garagiola was a fixture of morning time for me in the late 60s early 70s

From Wiki =>

About growing up living next to Berra, Garagiola once said, "Not only was I not the best catcher in the Major Leagues, I wasn't even the best catcher on my street!"

Joe came from a rough Italian neighborhood where the youth were frequently arrested.Joe was a good kid who started getting his name in the papers because of his athletic prowess.An older Italian man from the neighborhood approached him and said,”Joe,you the only kid I know,who getta his name in the paper and no killa somebody.”

One of the good guys. Although he was far from a superstar on the field, he did very well for himself as a broadcaster and television personality. I still remember the commercials he did as a pitch man for Chrysler Corporation when they became one of the first car companies to offer rebates: “Buy a car....get a check!”

Wow, I forgot about that one but I remember it now that you have mentioned it! I even remember Johnny Carson spoofing that commercial, saying NBC was offering rebates if people would watch their shows. "Watch 'Hello Larry', Get a check!"
