Apparently, it's not enough that UND's administration is attacking the quality of education by cutting programs and experienced faculty and jacking class sizes. Now, we must also feel under physical attack as well.
I look up from my office computer to see two figures in camo with guns outside my window. My first thought is for my students' and my safety: I grab my phone, crawl under my desk and call 911. The dispatcher keeps me on the line until someone can see if ROTC is doing maneuvers.
I can barely talkfirst, with fear, and then with rage when the dispatcher reports back that yes, in fact, I've probably just seen ROTC cadets, though they're going to send an officer to check because no one has cleared it with them. They thank me for reporting it.
A few minutes later, a university officer calls me backnot to reassure me, but to scold me for calling 911. He says ROTC has permission to do this exercise. When I tell him that this was news to 911 and that they encouraged me to call whenever I see a gun on campus, he seems surprised.
He also tells me that ROTC will be doing these exercises for the next couple weeks.
So I reply that I guess I'll be calling 911 for the next couple weeksand I will. Every time.

Poor baby!........................
Yet more evidence of America’s vast and growing tidal wave of weenie-ism.
What does UND stand for?
So she knows that the “gunmen” are ROTC, but she’s going to call 911 anyway.
What an amazing little rabbit! I wonder how she would have survived WWII? As I recall, my Father In Law who was a Bomber pilot trainer was based in UND and there were a lot of military there. It is a sad scared world some people live in.
GrandForksHerald might be a clue...
University of North Dakota. At one time, a very fine institution. Now it is much like many other indoctrination centers.
University of Nattering Dingbats, I would guess
The University of North Dakota-home to the Fighting Sioux oops that not the name anymore.
She’s got good points - why is ROTC conducting military exercises in the quad? Training for what? And why aren’t these exercises massively advertised, given that school shootings are hardly unusual anymore?
Seems designed to provoke fear.
Good for Heidi.
Lack of coordination and preparedness can get people killed.
It’s inexcusable that university prigs fail to inform instructors of all activities occurring on campus.
That is what a *schedule* is for— to schedule activities.
A schedule should not just be hung on a tree, not in this era, but should be dutifully posted to every teacher, and also the student body.
How hard is this that even the basics are now unachievable?
Wow! this person does not understand why we have a country. Who allows these twits to teach children?
University of North Dakota. And University of Notre Dame, but since this is Grand Forks...
“they encouraged me to call whenever I see a gun on campus”
She calls 911 every time she sees the police?
Well, what if she was a tough guy? She might have assumed that these were terrorists and opened up on them with live ammunition. That would not be good either.
If you’re going to do something like this, it is appropriate to notify everyone so that no mistakes happen.
No, poor little snowflake!
This has got to be some kind of a joke.
I have no clue where Grand Forks is. I don’t know every city in the US.
