A doctoral candidate at the University of North Dakota published a paper suggesting that we should make Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) courses more inclusive of women by making then less competitive, which is about the most sexist thing Ive ever heard. There is an opportunity for STEM courses to reduce the perception of courses as difficult and unfriendly through language use in the syllabi, and also as a guide for how to use less competitive teaching methods and grading profiles that could improve the experience of female students, Laura Parson wrote in the paper.

So my Science Major daughter busting her butt making A’s shouldn’t bother now? Guess a Masters won’t mean much if you’re female. Idiocy
Probably not so much at the urinals.

Getting the right answer should not be the goal. What is really important is how you feel about it and if it boosted your self esteem. Jeez, you math geeks just don’t get it.
I saw a meme of a cute college girl up at a blackboard doing what looked like Algebra. The young lady had her arms down and her head was pressed against the blackboard.
The caption read (to the effect) - this math stuff is hard, screw it, I’m going to be a stripper.
Now I am not saying that women can’t do math but the meme does point out a difference between the male and female. Females can and sometimes do follow other directions that are less demanding and/or competitive. That is because the “market” allows them that option. Males do not have such options available to them. Being a stay at home dad and raising the kids is still a VERY unique job for men.
Basic understanding of economics has already been eliminated, for both boys and girls. Might as well eliminate the underlying concepts of arithmetic as well.
Insisting that 1 + 1 can only equal 2 is somehow racist, sexist, bigoted, homophobic, etc. when it comes to math education.
However, try using Million Man Math or, better yet, Common Core Math to your advantage when preparing your taxes and watch what happens.
It is saying very clearly that women can’t compete, and the way to make them succeed is to make it easier for them.
Now suppose a man had said that.
Generally boys do better in STEM classes and worse in English and foreign languages. Guess which ones they keep adding to the requirements and which they try to take out? It’s part of the war on boys that has permeated our schools.
I don’t think anyone should be able to graduate with a college degree unless they understand compound interest. It will have a larger role in most peoples life than a foreign language.
The objective is to IMPART KNOWLEDGE to most EFFECTIVELY address TECHNICAL PROBLEMS.
This isn’t about filling a chair at an engineering firm and collecting a paycheck.
You must be EQUIPPED to SOLVE THE PROBLEM!!!
She is the SEXIST for suggesting WOMEN CAN’T HANDLE IT!!
Evidently Laura Parson considers women to be inferior.
This kind of “Doctoral” thinking coming out of the North Dakota higher education system is indicative of the depths to which it has sunk. Save us all a lot of trouble and just sell lottery tickets to a Doctoral Degree, put them in a pot at what ever ration of men to women desired and then have a drawing.
The fact this article was ever written says ‘education’ has already had the bar lowered.
Whine, whine, whine. Look at me, I’m a victim! WAHHHH.
Sorry, but in my son’s graduating class there were many, many young women, but they were all Indians, Chinese, a few Russians, and assorted Asians among the few American women.
Not one of them thought they needed to be “helped” since all of them were graduates of highly competitive schools in their own countries.
“The University of North Dakota should deny her a Ph.D. until she demonstrates an ability to actually think.”
Doctorates are participation trophies. Spend enough time at a school and get one. I’ve known ebonics illiterates to get them.
My daughter is a physics major at a well-known university.
Out of about 90 kids in the honors course, only 6 are women - and its only freshman year. They only started out with only 9 female students anyway and in fact, a much higher percentage of boys have dropped out.
The girls who remain are doing well, but there simply isn’t the interest in Physics among the female student body.
one of the STEM benefits is that the program is largely free of females that can’t measure up
“aura Parson is a doctoral candidate in the teaching and learning department, higher education concentration, at the University of North Dakota. She has a MEd, Adult Education concentration, and TESOL certificate from Westminster College. Her research interests focus on the experiences of women in higher education, including Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education and post-structuralist/feminist research methods. More specifically, her dissertation is an institutional ethnography of STEM education from the standpoint of undergraduate women. Correspondence regarding this article can be addressed directly to: Laura Parson at, Laura.parson@und.edu.”
Right, an education flunky telling seriously involved STEM doctorates to make nice with the little women.
Can she get any more sexist than that?
