Washington Posts Karen Attiah sounded the alarms of sorts this afternoon when she Tweeted out the following cryptic message after a meeting with Donald Trump and the WaPo Editorial Board:
As you can see from the user engagement on the Tweet, people were quick to follow up on Attiahs commentary, asking for any clarification on this newly-emerging behavior from the Republican frontrunner.
Then Monday night, Attiah who serves as the Deputy Opinions Editor for the Post released her story with the headline I asked Trump a policy question. Then he called me beautiful.
Attiah mentioned, and transcribed, some of the policy-related conversation that they had with the Republican frontrunner (But do you feel that your messages, your rhetoric, are dangerous and divisive for this country?, seemingly commonplace topics for Trump questioning these days), before detailing the after-meeting exchange she shared with Trump personally:
As the meeting ended and we were walking out of the room, I thanked Trump for taking my question. He turned to me and said, I really hope I answered your question, and added casually with a smile, Beautiful. I was stunned. I didnt say thank you, and I dont think I smiled. He then walked out to meet with my Post colleagues briefly before heading to the elevator. I stayed in the conference room for a few minutes as it sunk in that the potential GOP nominee for president thought it was okay to comment on my appearance. Did he just say that?

None of the examples were “policy questions.”
We would take it as a compliment, say thank you and move on. But, I m 72! Some people try to make a mountain out of a mole hill. Is that smaller than an ant hill?
I tell women they are beautiful all day long, because they are.
I am jot hitting on them, so much as I am trying to be that ray of sunshine in their day who noticed...well, maybe I’m hitting on them....
Typical of what we can expect from the drugged/whacked out anti Trump mediots for the rest of the year!
If nothing else about Trump he just might end the PC run mad mess in this country. Said by someone who wants a Ted Cruz small government world.
At least he didn’t rape her.
From the description, it is not clear that he was commenting on her appearance at all, but rather ending the conversation with a conclusion that he had answered her questions.
How dare he speak an untruth like that? Lyin' Don, ehehhe.
Ok, this time I admit - TRUMP LIED !!
Of course, if he had acted neutral, she would be claiming he was racissss and did not like negro women............
He called her beautiful? LOL
Looks like he exaggerated a bit.
Do NOT interfere with her fifteen minutes.
And don’t you DARE call her beautiful.
Have no idea what this female looks like. But if she were wise and coy, she would be smiling on the inside and glowing the man paid her such a compliment. Feminists! No wonder Men don’t care much for them. Truth be known, not many women find them appealing either.
Just my 2 cents
Since her “policy question” was “is your rhetoric divisive and hateful”, “beautiful” sounds like a massively restrained way of saying “thanks for the cheap shot, you shallow, walking stereotype”.
I guess none of her colleagues at the Wash. Post compliment her. She should be happy that The Donald did. It may be the only compliment she’ll get for a long time.
Got lots of women in my part of the world that use the word “honey”. Seems to be common with waitresses. I don’t for a second think it’s other than a colloquialism
She wishes.....
Well, he’s got good taste.
Karen Attia YOU’RE A WINNER! C’mon down and collect your 15 minutes of fame
