Cruz, Rubio Camps Discuss Delegates
RealClearPolitics ^ | March 18, 2016 | Rebecca Berg

Top political aides to Sens. Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz connected Friday to discuss how delegates currently bound to Rubio might be allocated, a Cruz campaign aide confirmed to RealClearPolitics.

Although the conversation between Rubio’s former campaign manager, Terry Sullivan, and Cruz Campaign Manager Jeff Roe was brief and no resolution was reached, the development suggests the two former rivals could be moving toward detente if not an active collaboration.

-snip-

If Rubio does decide to endorse Cruz, the aide said, that decision would likely be reached between the two of them, not among senior aides.

“Marco and Ted are good friends, so the reality is, this wouldn’t be like how other endorsements have taken place,” said the aide to Cruz. “The way this will happen is Marco and Ted will talk, and both of them will let us know.”

Another line of communication opened Friday, however, when Sullivan and Roe spoke by phone to discuss the fate of Rubio’s delegates. They also talked about the state of the race more generally, but did not touch on the possibility of an endorsement from Rubio.

Asked whether an agreement has been reached between the two camps, Roe said no. “We have no agreement … and any suggestion to the contrary is false,” he said. “Maybe it will become true, but that certainly is not the case right now in any shape, fashion or form.”

Well, Auh2orepublican is pretty smart, maybe he knows more. Campaignpete is pretty plugged in.

It depends on the state, in my state of IL most of the delegates were directly elected by Congressional district, so we know their names at least, doesn’t mean we know them from Adam, most of the big names ran for Kasich or Bush, the Trump people (most of whom won) were unknown random people but one assumes they’re loyal Trump supporters. The rest (the statewide ones) will be elected at the state convention this May.

Those seem to be the 2 choices, directly elected or chosen at the state conventions. All the caucus states choose them at state conventions if I’m not mistaken. The exact breakdown, I don’t know.

http://theweek.com/articles/613016/donald-trump-delegate-problem-not-think

This article posits a lot of delegates bound to Trump on the first ballot will be people that don’t like him who might quickly abandon him on subsequent ballots. Michigan is specifically mentioned. Very interesting.

It’s all rather arcane. The failure of any candidate (sadly, Trump is the only one who still can, Cruz would need 88% of outstanding delegates) to win on the first ballot would create a situation unprecedented in modern times.

Not many agree but I still like my idea of having a same day (May or June) nationwide closed primary with an instant runoff ballot (voters rank the candidates, choices are eliminated until someone has a majority).

“Romney’s father was a GOPe critter and Romney has been GOPe all his life...”

And Donnie’s been a liberal Democrat and made thousand of dollars in political contributions to those that espouse his wonderful New York values virtually his entire life.

And you’re telling me you prefer Donnie?

Ok. Fine.

So explain to us why they sucked so bad in the election then?

Funny how this “faker” seems to have been able to sell conservative positions that we demanded be at the forefront of this election better than these two knuckleheads have.

And have done so at great risk to him, his fortune, and his life + family.

Which is more than any of these loudmouth “true conservatives” have managed to do.

Especially Mr. Gang of 8 Leader and the clueless twit that lost every southern state.

Why?
It’s great strategy and shows Cruz knows how to win.
We do want to make this country Win again right? If so then we want someone who will do it. Not by almost reaching 50%+1 and failing. We want someone who can win outright.
We want a Deal Maker - right?
What a better way to win than making the best deals - Right?

Do we want someone who can pull the party together for November to WIN? It looks like one candidate is working on doing just that. You don’t have to hate Cruz in order to be trump fan. It isn’t necessary.

"The other possible scenario is that Rubio formally ends his campaign, instead of simply suspending it as is the current situation, in which case the delegates are free to vote for whoever the hell they want."

Never happen. If he does he cannot use the remaining funds for his now-certain-to-be-contested Senate race, nor attend ur-election grayzone PAC/GOPe/Convention doings using those funds. And Foam Boy likes to fly downlow/underradar/privately...

I gave you an answer.

Cruz isn’t bowing before the Elitists any more than Donnie would be if he got the endorsements.

In fact, I note there a bunch of GOPe’s in Trump’s camp already. Does that mean they are influencing him?

Instead of trying to trip up Cruz by laying out a list of people that you don’t like who support him, you should use that fabulous brain of yours to look at Trump’s positions on the issues. You might actually learn that Donnie’s entire life his actions have demonstrated that he has been a liberal Democrat and has made thousands of dollars in contributions to liberal Democrats.

As Ben used to say, “Let them judge him by his fruits.”

I see no conservative fruits in Donnie’s background.

But you go ahead and vote for a liberal....

As far as I know, Rubio is not running for re-election to the Senate.

“I gave you an answer.”

No you did not!

You just said you were happy to get votes from wherever, which is not what I asked! I will ask you yet AGAIN:

“Do you support Cruz’s increasing warm relationship with these people or not?”

Are you in favor of Cruz being allied directly with the GOPe or not, in case the question isnt clear for you.

Not at all.

Unlike you, I vote FOR a candidate. I don’t just vote AGAINST the establishment, although Cruz has actually fought the fight against the establishment, and your candidate hasn’t. In fact, your candidate has made deals with the establishment and used them to his own benefit.

Unlike you, it matters to me that I can rely on a candidate that has a core set of values that I believe in.

Donnie can’t be loyal to one position for more than 24 hours, and his first instinct has always been to support liberals, financially and politically, and/or support his own business interests regardless of the political, ethical, or moral consequences of that support.

You get in bed with the GOPe to win a nomination he could not win on his own, and WE WALK.

It’s as simple as that.

You play stupid games, you will win stupid prizes.

Are you happy with Trump’s 40 years of cozy relationships and monetary payoffs with not only the Republican establishment but also the Democratic establishment?

You’re certainly familiar with that, right Vandy?

Trump’s incestuous relationship with the establishment is well documented and admitted.

Cruz’s “warm relationship” with the establishment is nothing but your fictional wet dream.

I wonder if you are one of the ones that has told me repeatedly that no voting for trump, if he’s the nominee, is a vote for Hillary.

It is awesome to know that I’m talking to the guy who speaks for ALL trump fans though. I didn’t think the fan club had a president other than trump himself. I’m humbled.

The GOPe is aligning with Cruz. That shows that Cruz can pull them to the right and not that the GOPe is pulling Cruz to the left. They have been trying to do that for several years and failed every time.

They’ve sucked so bad because this con-man has taken advantage of a fever amongst people who used to be principled conservatives. Who has trump sold his positions to? 40% of the GOP primary electorate which is about 1/6th of the general election population leaving the rest to split the vote. But guess what? He has to do really well with the other 5/6ths of the electorate to win and his nomination means a Hillary presidency because that isn’t happening. You can bet she’s celebrating her fortune for not facing Rubio and is measuring the drapes. At this point Cruz is the only hope for keeping the Senate and avoiding the serious possibility of losing the house and handing the keys to the entire government to the Dems as you know they will entirely nuke the filibuster this time. I know Trump supporters might have trouble with math but when you permanently alienate 60%+ of the electorate you are a toxic loser. This idea that there are massive droves of white voters waiting to be tapped is absurd. Unfortunately we don’t live in Reagan’s America anymore. In fact, if the country were demographically the same as it was when Reagan was elected Obama never would have won. The real sad part is this was a totally winnable election against a flawed Dem candidate and we’re flushing it down the toilet and a long with it the Supreme Court. We deserve the government we get is what I say,

From THIS ARTICLE REFERENCED BY Impy

"For weeks now, Republican operatives who oppose Trump have begun an effort to identify the men and women in each state who will likely be slated as Trump's delegates to the nomination. Sen. Ted Cruz's campaign has its own state-by-state delegate identification and selection effort. So far, state chairs say they've heard next to nothing from Trump's campaign."

I would strongly advise Trump and Cruz supporters to read the Impy linked article carefully. What it tells me is that Trump may well get one shot at the nomination: Get the votes to win on the first ballot. After that it may be Cruz unless the POB (Power That Be) are willing to take the risk of pushing Kasich. I don't think they will but they might.

And read and re-read this from the article and Impy's Post:

"This article posits a lot of delegates bound to Trump on the first ballot will be people that don’t like him who might quickly abandon him on subsequent ballots. Michigan is specifically mentioned. Very interesting."

This threat of Trump and his supporters to walk is empty. Trump will lose either way so who cares if his supporters walk. In my opinion we need a real conservative to run third party because at least it will give GOP Senate and House candidates someone to retreat to and save their seats. That way not only do we prevent the damage to image of the party but at least we maintain a GOP congress to fight Hillary. So principled conservatives shouldn’t care if you walk. We’re the ones who more likely to go.
