Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois on Friday became the first Republican senator to call for an up-or-down vote on Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland, saying on a Chicago radio show that his colleagues ought to just man up and cast a vote.
That Kirk would be first to break with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and other GOP colleagues, who believe the next president should pick the replacement for Justice Antonin Scalia, is not particularly surprising: Kirk was already one of two Republican senators, with Susan Collins of Maine, to call for hearings.

When the Republicans fold, Trump’s numbers will soar. This is why the GOP is in crisis, as it should be.
“We don’t intend to turn the Republican Party over to the traitors in the battle just ended. We will have no more of those candidates who are pledged to the same goals as our opposition and who seek our support. Turning the Party over to the so-called moderates wouldnt make any sense at all.” — President Ronald Reagan
Is there any good, popular candidate that can Primary him? Or has that time passed? We CANNOT lose the Senate! There will be no good done if we gain the Presidency and lose the Senate......a Dem controlled Senate will not let anything a Repub House passes come to the floor and we would just have an Obama type situation where the President will do EOs to get things done. But this time Big Media would scream about the President legislating from the Oval Office instead of lauding the actions, like they do with Obama.
Maybe he’s their next....”Maverick”!
He thinks this will save him in his reelection fight, but he’s already gone. He’s down about 20 points as an incumbent. There isn’t anything that will save him. He will be gone in January. These guys always think being moderate will save them, but if they’re gone, they’re gone, and he’s gone.
I have a sinking feeling that they will confirm Garland after the elections to *punish* voters for choosing Trump.
And of all the issues facing America today, you have to applaud this doofus for selecting this one as his badge of courage.
RINOs are in season.
My school of thought is to give the RINO’s 2 terms in the Senate and accept what they give us. Kirk will lose so I say cut bait on him.
How is it that Illinois voted in a Republican governor and will not be voting for a ‘Republican’ Senator? Not enough good Dem cheating in the Governor’s race?
Didn’t take long to strap on the kneepads.
sounds like he needs to be primaried.
I love the GOP. They have the backbone of a Jelly Fish.
And that might ba little too hard on Jelly fish.
Yes, and he will lose in McGovernite fashion.
Kirk probably thinks this will help him win in November, but my understanding is that he has less than a 25 percent chance of victory in this popular liberal state, where Mrs. Bill will be virtually unopposed.
Kirk votes with the Dems 80% of the time.
Pssst.... Illinois primary already happened a week ago. A bunch of fools voted TRUMP-KIRK on their ballots.
I am not confident that committee chair Grassley and GOPer's Flake, Graham and Hatch wont join the nine Democrats to send the nomination to the floor. Garland then will get the 60 votes needed to beat cloture.
Orrin Grant Hatch has said already that he favors a vote on Garland, but Orrin did not say he would vote for Garland himself. Orrin is known for his “fairness” issues. They usually work to benefit the Democrat that Orrin claims to oppose.
THAT is an excellent point, IMHO. The GOP can’t fold on this one because Trump’s numbers WILL soar as you say. I love it! GOPe is in between a rock and a hard place on this one.
Yhere were two candidates running against Mark Kirk in the Illinois primary. While their imdividual vote totals have not shown up here in FR .Like they used to in some of these races and I miss this aspect. Or even the postings of links to FR choices of candidates websites.
To me, and I could be wrong here and hope I am.
It looks like the dominent emphasis was on Cruz vs Trump which sucked the air out of US aenate races and that the combined totals of both senate candidates did not exceed the returns for Mark Kirk. And that is the reason Kirk jumped out with his position that he has held all along, which should have been a key issue in that campaign.
If it was it was never posted here that I recall and with this crucial campaign been closely monitoring closely.
