The Geography of Trumpism NEIL IRWIN and JOSH KATZ MARCH 12, 2016
When the Census Bureau asks Americans about their ancestors, some respondents dont give a standard answer like English or German. Instead, they simply answer American.
The places with high concentrations of these self-described Americans turn out to be the places Donald Trumps presidential campaign has performed the strongest.
This connection and others emerged in an analysis of the geography of Trumpism. To see what conditions prime a place to support Mr. Trump for the presidency, we compared hundreds of demographic and economic variables from census data, along with results from past elections, with this years results in the 23 states that have held primaries and caucuses. We examined what factors predict a high level of Trump support relative to the total number of registered voters.
The analysis shows that Trump counties are places where white identity mixes with long-simmering economic dysfunctions.
The places where Trump has done well cut across many of the usual fault lines of American politics North and South, liberal and conservative, rural and suburban.
What they have in common is that they have largely missed the generation-long transition of the United States away from manufacturing and into a diverse, information-driven economy deeply intertwined with the rest of the world.
Its a nonurban, blue-collar and now apparently quite angry population, said William Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution. Theyre not people who have moved around a lot, and things have been changing away from them, but they live in areas that feel stagnant in a lot of ways.
SEE GRAPH The 10 Variables Most Closely Linked to a Countys Support for Donald Trump A correlation of 1 means the variable is a perfect indicator of Trump support.* Negative correlations are shown in red.

People from areas with historically high and fairly recent immigration think answering “American” is ignorant, not understanding what you, I and a few others have explained.
Steelfish is an agitator and a hack who spends most of his time on here posting negative articles about Trump and arguing with Trump supporters.
Oh yes, any posting of newsstories or columns that are negative of your Dear Leader makes that person an “agitator.” Kim Jung-un would be delighted to have you in his camp. Why don’t you address the “substance” of the news stories. Or are you the kind that Trump had in mind when he says he “loves the least educated,” or among those who would take a hail of bullets from Trump in the middle of Fifth Avenue, no matter what facts emerge about Trump?
Hgnorace is bliss. Trump has won NE-South-Mld West and HI so just another intantile attempot to ignore the inconvint facts that Trumps support is far deeper and diverse then eith Clinton or Cruz
Pure garbage when you look at the actual data instead of clinf this manufactured propagnda meme. In the erxit polling where Trump has won Trump wins all demographic all races excpt over 10O,000 income (splits with Rubio or Kaisch) and the “Very Conservative” which he loes to Cruz. But the facts will never stop the media scum from push a lie they mistakenly thinks helps them politically
Joe Dan puts the lie to the lies being told about Trump and makes points I’ve been trying to hammer home on our little radio gig since Trump announced!
Key among those points is that is UTTER MADNESS to send another batch of lawyers/politicians (but I repeat myself) to solve the massive mess created by PREVIOUS batches of lawyers/politicians! WE NEED AN HONEST-TO-GOD CEO! It’s WHY it’s called the EXECUTIVE BRANCH!

Nope your responses prove that point about you
Past graduate level degree adults voting for Trump at this address!
Hmm, I couldn’t figure out what my ancestry had to do with the Census Form, so I just tell them how many people there are at the address in question, and I’m done.
In a similar vein, every time I fill out a questionnaire and the question of “race” comes up, I always answer “Human”.
There is no excuse to ask or answer questions of race or ethnic origin of one’s ancestors, other than to divide this country. Those interested in dividing this country are its enemies, plain and simple. We are all Americans, and all members of the human race. On this issue, Teddy Roosevelt was 100% correct: the existence of people within this nation who consider themselves something besides American is an assault on the very concept of this nation.
Oh yeah I know that.
Figure it out. I’ll give you 2 clues American Trump.
"See? This is where Trumpism comes from!"
Ms. Irwin and Ms. Katz, why don't you go try to join ISIS in Syria?
This is a load of crap not borne out by statistics. It is wishful stereotyping by journalists.
BUT, those old census records sure help to be able to find and locate where your ancestors were born. If you do not put that on your census forms, please consider doing it for the generations to come.
.
Theodore Roosevelt was a wise man.
>> Address the substance of the article <<
Uh, I think that’s against the rules around here.
The southern states (to be clear: SC, AL, GA, AR, TN, KY, LA, and MS)have given Mr. Trump 234 delegates. The rest of the states have given Mr. Trump 226 delegates.
Mr. Cruz has 107 delegates from “southern states” and 263 delegates from the rest of the states.
Interestingly 51% of Mr. Trumps delegates are from “southern states” and 71% of Mr. Cruz’ delegates are from non-southern states.
LOL! That’s because Trump seldom talks substance.
Also today, of the 30 delegates awarded Mr. Trump received 1, Mr. Cruz 9, Mr. Rubio 10, and Mr. Kasich 9. This is from Wyoming and DC. Guam had 9 delegates that are unbound.
