The release of genetically modified mosquitoes in the Florida Keys cleared a significant hurdle Friday when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced they pose no significant environmental danger.
The preliminary findings, to be published in the Federal Register, will be open for public comment for the next 30 days. But the initial federal review likely clears the way for a long-delayed field trial by British producer Oxitec in the tiny affluent neighborhood of Key Haven a mile east of Key West.
Pitched as a safer, more affordable way of battling Oxitecs modified male mosquitoes are engineered to produce offspring with a kill-switch, or defective gene that kills them. The offspring also bear a florescent marker gene so larvae can be identified when inspectors conduct mosquito counts and gauge the progress of the program.

Caitlyn Mosquitoes?
Yup.nothing can go wrong with this.
Always said that’s killer bees came from a manipulated lot..
Didn’t I see this in a movie..................Doesn’t end well...........................
This is how the Zombie apocalypse begins...
so mosquitoes take over the general population of mosquitoes.
They all die off.
The animals that prey on mosquitoes no longer have prey, and so they die off OR start eating other species.
And so on, until everything up the food chain no longer has its prey. so they turn to humans
What could go wrong?
(would make a great sci-fi movie, huh?)
Male mosquitoes are harmless.
Only the females require a blood meal after mating to lay eggs.
Liberals say we need more government to protect the environment from evil corporations.
But in practice, as long as it’s “for science”, the FDA will rubber stamp any retarded plan to play God that biologists come up with.
This is how every Grade-B Sci-Fi movie starts...

It’s a Heads Up! Be safe.!
Long time ago the gov’t got Kudzu from Japan (or wherever) to stop erosion in US.
Brother.
“Releasing into the wild is not a “field trial”, it is “go live” with no possibility of rollback.”
Bingo. FDA are nothing but sellouts!
How can they know there is “no danger” of introducing new genes into the wild? We have no ability to test for every possible interaction they will have in the environment.
Heck, I build buildings for a living and things routinely come up that we never thought of during design. Even in the simplest looking projects that get reviewed by designers with hundreds of combined years experience.
The biosphere is WAY more complex than any man-made structure and should not be messed with!
Personally I welcome our new mosquito overlords.
Not sure anything lives exclusively on mosquitoes. There’s a lot of bug eaters out there, but they tend to eat everything they can get, and mosquitoes aren’t exactly the meatiest bug on anybody’s menu.
The Sierra Club will be in court later to plead the case for the die off of song birds.
