Michael Steele Dumbfounded By Romney Speech:"I Don't Know Who They Think This Is Going To Influence"
RCP ^ | Tim Hains

2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney will be delivering a major speech Thursday denouncing Donald Trump.

FORMER RNC CHAIRMAN MICHAEL STEELE: I don't know why they think this is going to work in the first place. I don't know who they think this is going to influence.

Keep in mind, Mitt Romney lost 3 million Republicans, who didn't even bother to show up and vote for him because they did not support his campaign.

The GOP views Donald Trump as an illegal immigrant and someone determined to undermine their sovereignty. They see Donald as a threat to the control they exert over their territory, and they are willing to engage in a very ugly public battle over control of their borders, fiercely defending who gets into the GOP and who is not allowed.

Best analogy I've seen in a long time!

True that

Makes me wonder how much input he actually might have had. Now I know why they didn’t want Ken Blackwell. Ken was politically savvy and very outspoken. The political class can’t stand that

I read an online rant yesterday from some guy claiming to be in GOP insider in Wisconsin. He claimed that Steele had the chairmanship stolen because of some sort of shady RP dealings.

True or not? Who knows. But it does mesh with what I've seen out of Steele the past few days.

He's no fan of RP.

I think it will convince more people to vote for Trump. My husband, no Trump advocate by any means, is disgusted with the GOP doing crap like this and he’s only decided he hates the GOP within the past couple days. I may get him to vote Trump after all - thanks Mitt!

Interesting dynamic. Seems GOP is pushing people to Trump with their outrageous attacks. Also looks to me like Rubio is pushing some conservatives from Trump to Cruz with his negative Trump ads. Net is Trump and Cruz go up while Rubio is stagnant.

Seeing what has gone on at RNC I now believe that Steele had NO input what so ever. The political class like to present a face a Bahgdad Bob if you will to the public.

We are on to them completely the curtain has been pulled back. There is no wizard

Fox & Friends has previewed Romney’s sore loser speech and it is amazing.
He never showed the venom against Obama as he has mustered against Trump. This is sure to give Trump 10% more in the next polls, because Romney’s pro-establishment pitch will boost Trump’s nomination substantially.

Yep. And contrast this venom from Romney to McCain’s love of Obama. The GOP really do hate their base more than Democrats.

Spot on post, excellent analogy!

Goes without saying but too bad they don't feel the same about the border invasion.

Moral Monster Mitt Romney has the gilt-edged nerve to open his evil lying yap to attack The Donald???

I am not fan of The Donald for a wide variety of reasons often expressed n FR, but he will become instantly more acceptable when attacked by the mobile obscenity known as Mitt Romney.

My original choice was Scott Walker and I will go to my grave (not quite yet!) knowing that our failure to nominate him and Walker's failure to adequately organize his POTUS campaign will cost our country and our movement far more than anything else could in this terrible nomination race and election.

My choice now is Ted Cruz but I must admit that his chances do not look good and we will regret that too, second only to the loss of Scott Walker.

My third choice would have been the most naturally talented candidate in the race, Marco Rubio, who has, unfortunately, proven himself not morally or politically ready for prime time. Generally great voting record and grasp of conservatism who has thrown it away with both hands first with his failure on the immigration question and then by his dishonesty over it and finally by sucking up to the usual gang of moneyed suspects in the GOP-E. He will likely NEVER be able to recover.

Kasich is basically a clever whore who flies below radar on autosellout.

Dr. Carson is a nice man and an oustanding neurosurgeon but, as a candidate, strictly amateur hour.

That leaves us with The Donald. On this day, I will not repeat all of my usual criticisms of The Donald but I admit that they are not diminished. The Donald being bashed by trash like Moral Monster Mitt Romney has received the greatest endorsement he could hope for. I simply express the hope (probably forlorn) that The Donald turns out, in office, to be the man that his devoted supporters imagine.

I shall vote for Ted Cruz in the Illinois primary and, if The Donald is indeed nominated, in the absence of unforeseen factors, I expect to vote for The Donald in November and I hope that he will "clarify" his campaign to conform to conservative movement (NOT GOP-E) norms. I would reserve my right to vote for Tom Hoefling of Iowa, FR's own Eternal Vigilance as I did last time. Tom deserves that vote but we and the USA do not deserve a man like Tom whose steadfast adherence to morality and constitutional principle stand as a testament to our own shortcomings.

I confess a temptation to give in to the argument that Her Royal Thighness is the boogieman and the Antichrist. I am a weak and fallen man. If I vote for The Donald and he is as bad as I fear (less bad than I KNOW Hillary is), I ask God's forgiveness. I fear that I am struggling with my conscience and my conscience is losing.

‘I think the Fairfax GOP ‘squad’ pretty much has used up every silver bullet in their possession. No one believes the national GOP message anymore...’

I don’t know if Cruz could have connected with low-info patriots the way Trump did. Maybe? Hard to say. But Trump took the fiery darts early on and survived the manhood test.

The battleship which took the most flak this primary? No question. It was the USS Trump.

Steele, if I recall - and I barely can - was accused of being fast and loose with RNC spending off the clock. Maybe that is what you need in DC to grease palms (going to strip clubs, etc). I could Google it up but I don’t much care to remember.

I'm like you. I have a vague memory of Steele as RNC chief, but it's not worth the bother to look it up.
