For the last eight months or so, a significant portion of the Republican party's voters have been in thrall to a bizarre, Occupy-esque conspiracy theory, which holds as its central thesis that sabotage and pusillanimity are the root causes of the Right's recent woes. In this mistaken view, the conservative movement's failure to counter all of the Obama era's excesses is not the product of the crucial democratic and structural factors that prevent any one faction from ushering in substantial change, but of a lack of will or desire. Sure, the advocates of this view will concede, the shutdown of 2013 was doomed from the start, in large part because the public sided with President Obama. But if the GOP had just held out a little longer, they imagine, the "power of the purse" would have prevailed and the popular dynamics would magically have shifted. The same insistence obtains elsewhere: Sure, there is no precedent in which a second-term president willingly repeals his centerpiece legislative achievements simply because the legislature has elected to play hardball with its powers. But somehow, the critics believe, this time would have been different. Why, they ask repeatedly, didnât the Republican party just "fight" harder?
Given how broadly this opinion is held, one would have expected the 2016 primary season to reveal a penchant for purity that redounded to the favor of a candidate such as Ted Cruz. And yet, oddly enough, quite the opposite has happened thus far. Led by Donald Trump, the most frustrated voters have instead put their efforts behind a well-telegraphed attempt to burn down the whole political edifice and reconstruct it from scratch. Because it has been imperfect, the GOP must be destroyed.

Charles Cooke uses the word “imperfect” to define the Republican Party’s general and abysmal failure as a party during the Obama years. That’s obscene use of the adjective in this case.
The Republican Party failed, and Trump is on the march because of it, because only about 40 or 50 of Republicans in the house lived up to the PROMISES they made their constituents to get elected. The rest LIED Mr. Cooke! LIED, LIED, LIED.
So, you can take your “imperfect” adjective and put it where the sun doesn’t shine. I’m sure it impresses your bosses at National Review but as the recent primary/caucus votes show “we the people” think otherwise.
People have lost faith that politicians have the ability to address the issues of the day.
Cruz has little to show for accomplishments, has had a strategy to target a small base and is generally unlikable as a person.
Please take me off your Bitter Haters of Trump ping list.
Thanks.
Max Boot? He was a -child- in the 80s, went to Berkley, and is a writer. He has zero standing to explain to us what a facist is.
He sounds like an idiot.
I don’t know of any RINO that is for stopping the illegal invasion, stopping the bad trade deals , totally pro-second amendment , pro-life , and against taking money from anyone ..if that’s a RINO to you , then you need to do some soul searching ...
He is an idiot, but when you get paid to do a hit piece, you sharpen the crayons and try to stay inside the lines.
It is common for things to be discarded when they are ineffective and/or corrupt and/or just-not-working-out.
This piece sounds a little like pleading with a girlfriend who is breaking up with you "I know I haven't been perfect, but are you really going to destroy us?"
And that's a manipulative way of putting it. Because she wants to make a change in her life, you set her up as a violent destroyer of something beautiful, which is in fact no longer beautiful and probably which you have been taking for granted.
9 out of 10 times the other person is right assuming they are good, rational people, and the pitiful pleading and excuse making only makes her decision easier than you thought.
Not that it's ever happened to me or anything. That's just what my friends told me happened to them :-p
Seriously, this is pitiful.
Trump IS our Manhattan Project.
Nice!
Yessiree! One piece of purple prose at a time, or maybe six, or six hundred!!! “Manhatten Project”... what an embarrassment!
seen several articles today by different writers on different web and media sites about this but they all are too similar in wording and subject...as if the idea and guidelines for the article are from the SAME source...like the dems do all the time...issuing the talking papers to the press when things get tough...with the timing of the really stupid rommney charges...only a fool like him would take this own since he fell on this sword in his election...but the timing of all before tomorrow night spells a problem for trump if he is not prepared really prepared for the coordinated attacks from CNN and the other candidates ...I am sure it is planned now!!!
“Where was the stop Obama Manhattan project?”
Best post this thread.
” Sure, the advocates of this view will concede, the shutdown of 2013 was doomed from the start, in large part because the public sided with President Obama.”
It was such a HUGE FAILURE that we not only WON THE SENATE the next year, but we also OUSTED Eric Cantor that year (2014).
We need MORE FAILURES.
..Tomorrow night, as they stand on either side of Trump, Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz must find their resolve and all but machine gun the man to the floor...
The GOPe is having apoplectic Fits. Their years of lies, deceit, misrepresentations, and broken promises doom them.
Ayup!
You are right...if Trump is so bad what is the alternative...they don’t have one...it is just like their actions on obama care...they were against it but still don’t have any plans on what to replace it with...Trump does have details and look at his paper on trade and Sen Sessions take on that today!!!!!
I read the first few sentences. The writer is having a love affair with his own writing ability and thinks he’s the smartest man in the whole world. He’s a stinking idiot.
They're finally coming out from under the covers where they've been in a fetal position since Saturday night.
Everytime the shutters bang in the wind..."trump-trump-trump".
Their faucet drips..."trump-trump-trump"
Amazing that he’s actually doing it on purpose and thinks it makes him looks smart.
