To: I want the USA back

> BTW, where the hell were the churches during slavery?

It was the Christians that started the abolition movement in England, which quickly spread to the Colonies/States.

See William Wilberforce and William Penn.

Oh, and it was the MOSLEMS that started the African slave trade.

England outlawed slavery in 1812 and by 1835, slavery was completely abolished.

One of the reasons the American Congress passed a law against importation of slaves is that the British would commandeer slave ships and either imprison the crew or impress them in His Majesty’s navy.

“The reparation check comes with a one way ticket back to Africa”

I don’t know about that, but to assess the damage done by their lives in America as slaves, you need to consider what their lives would have been like had they remained in Africa. You’d also need to make that comparison of the lives of their descendants.

I wonder how many people living in 3rd world countries would gladly come to America if they could come legally as slaves, assuming they would be treated decently which the American public would insist on.

America is reparations

Remember, those enslaved were the inferior dregs of Africa. Had they not been inferior, they could not have been enslaved.

Today, even the lowest of the low live better lives in America than their enslavers in Africa

Let's see, since LBJ's “War on Poverty” was enacted in 1964, we've spent about $10 TRILLION on blacks and their problems. Those problems of poverty and broken homes and children born outside marriage and no education and criminal behavior haven't gotten better; they're worse.

$10 TRILLION IS A LOT OF MONEY — with nothing positive to show for it. And now the race baiters and poverty pimps are back at the public trough wanting more money. Sha-zam! You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out who or why that is, especially with the current administration in Washington, DC.

How about this? The next President declares the War on Poverty has been won and we don't need to subsidize it any more. All the money that would have gone there can be used to pay down our debt. The race baiters and poverty pimps will have to look elsewhere for their funds.

Any former slave should be paid.

The author is right, we could give reparations. Just jack the deficit up by another several trillion dollars and it’s easy.

You nailed it! Besides, aren’t most of them a living testimony of generations on welfare? My goodness, isn’t that enough?! Sadly, it will come to pass because of the people we’ve got in Congress. We’ll end up losing and them winning. I mean what the hell! My family wasn’t even in the country during the slavery era, nor the Civil War. Why do I have to pay for this shit?!

If we ever elect a black president, he will probably try to pass this.

Reparations have already been paid.

USA blacks are far more prosperous than they are anywhere else in the world - especially more so than in the place they came from - Africa....the average American black is a 1%’er compared to his distant relatives in Africa........

A close, conservative, Christian black friend who is a business owner says, “I am so thankful my ancestors were brought here as slaves. If they weren’t, I wouldn’t be anywhere as well-off as I am here - I’d be a poor tribe member in Africa!”

And the poorest of our poor blacks are rich compared to the really poor in Haiti or Nicaragua........they should all go spend 2 months in one of those countries to see how well off they are.........

My father’s family lived in Massachussets since the late 1600s and my mother’s family immigrated from Germany to Minnesota in the 1890s. No one on either side has ever owned a slave. Numerous relatives from my father’s side fought for the North in the Civil War.

1. Am I responsible for reparations simply because I’m a white American? Isn’t that the very definition of racism?

2. There are millions more like me. Also, not every black person has “slave blood”, like Obama. Will we perform a geneology review of every American to see who’s relatives suffered and who’s relatives owned slaves?

3. Can we go back in time? Let’s inform my relatives (and others like them) who were alive in 1861. Tell them that you’ll have to leave your farms and businesses, risk disease/mutilation/death to eliminate slavery. They’re agreeable to that. Now tell them that your ancestors are going to have to pay money to the very people that you will risk everything for...then let’s see how many actually fight for the North and who wins the war.

Easily blown up.

Some Republican proposes to pay reparations, but only if the checks go DIRECTLY TO INDIVIDUAL RECIPIENTS.

That will be a non-starter with the Jesse Jacksons and Al Sharptons of the world who want to divert it into their own pockets. So when the Democrats object their constituents will rise-up, and the Democrat Party will blow itself to smithereens.

What we really need to do is reject such nonsense as race or ancestry based debt. A black person alive in 2016 no more deserves money based on their skin color than does half this country’s whites whose distant relatives fought and died to free blacks - 150 years ago.

The mere idea of asking for such a thing makes the person a complete jerk.

My family too.
This writer seems to be making a decent life spouting this crap and she would not have been here if it were not for slavery anyway.

She should be thankful that she is here, and it was not her which was forced into slavery by other black tribesmen.

This article, and many like it, are founded on the hypothesis that the explanation - the only possible explanation - for the observed comparative relation of blacks and whites in 2016 is invidious discrimination. This "discrimination" carries various labels like "legacy of slavery" and "white privilege", but its explanatory power rests solely on the truth or falsity of the underlying hypothesis.

The belief in the underlying hypothesis is very strong. Children have been taught in school that it's true for fifty years or more. But belief, even unanimous belief, is not evidence of truth.

As long as the belief in "discrimination" is widely accepted, however, reparations are a certainty. It's fine to attack reparations as a standalone argument (I mean, it is absurd, and unjust, and all that).

But white Americans are a kindly and a generous people, and as long as they believe in their own responsibility for the deteriorating conditions across America, you'd better be ready to get out your checkbooks.

The one feature that all these slavers have in common: ISLAM Mohammedans started the African slave trade.

"There has been a recrudescence of jihad slavery since 1983 in the Sudan.[23][24]

Slavery in the Sudan predates Islam, but continued under Islamic rulers and has never completely died out in Sudan. In the Sudan, Christian and animist captives in the civil war are often enslaved, and female prisoners are often used sexually, with their Muslim captors claiming that Islamic law grants them permission.[25]"

Furthermore, let's say that your great-great-grandfather's offender realized the error of his ways and paid 200 times what the damage cost, and that your great-grandfather and your grandfather and your father and you are still getting checks from the guy's estate because of some latter-day misplaced guilt. Then let's say you take those checks and blow them on crack and hookers and have never worked a day in your life because you don't have to.

Who's the victim?

Am I responsible for reparations simply because I'm a white American?

That depends on what you believe about the present state of Black America.

It also depends on what you believe about collective guilt. If the Knoxville Horror had occurred in 1940, the black sections of Knoxville would have burned to the ground, and the arsonists would have justified their actions based on collective responsibility.

The case for reparations rests entirely on collective responsibility, down to the sixth generation. The advocates should reflect, very carefully, on what they are asking for, because once the principle is resurrected from its grave, it will run in all directions.
