The White House announced on Wednesday that neither President Barack Obama or first lady Michelle Obama will be attending the funeral of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. While Justice Scaliaâs funeral apparently doesnât warrant Obamaâs presence, here are six funerals that did.
- Senator Daniel Inouye (D-HI)
Less than two months before the 2012 election, both Obamas took time out of their schedule to attend the funeral of Senator Inouye. President Obama openly wept over the liberal senator. - Hadiya Pendleton
Three days before his 2013 State of the Union address, President Obama sent Michelle on his behalf to the funeral of 15 year-old shooting victim Hadiya Pendleton. Obamaâs decision to send Michelle to the Chicago teenâs funeral set the stage for his SOTU address, in which he called for further gun control restrictions. - Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV)
Despite Robert Byrdâs well-known ties to the Ku Klux Klan, President Obama attended the Democratic senatorâs funeral. Obama gave a speech at the ceremony and called the late senator his friend. - Reverend Clementa Pinckney
Reverend Pinckney, who also served as a South Carolina state senator, was one of the nine people killed in the Charleston shooting last summer. Despite never having met Pinckney, President Obama delivered his eulogy. - Former Democratic House Speaker Tom Foley
Just six months after snubbing the funeral of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, President Obama attended the funeral of former Democratic Speaker of the House Tom Foley. As he tends to do when actually attending funerals, Obama delivered a speech. - Walter Cronkite
When the legendary newscaster passed away in September 2009, President Obama found room in his schedule to travel to New York for the memorial service. Once again, Obama gave a speech at the service. He had openly admitted that he never met Cronkite.
Justice Scalia leaves behind nine children and 36 grandchildren.

The family is better off. If Obama attended, he would tie up traffic for miles and suck all the air out of the occasion for the family. The Holy Spirit might even stay away if Obama were there.

Correction: Antonin Scalia’s funeral will not be held in the traditional Catholic Church in Virginia where he worshiped but at the National Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, presided over by Donna Cardinal Wuerl, who would probably insist on distributing the Body and Blood of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ to TRUMP!!!, both Clintons, and both Obozos if they were in attendance and maybe to the dancing bears and elephants as well. Gotta be inclusive, don’tcha know? Archbishop Blase Cupich would gladly assist as would Sean Cardinal O’Malley. I also suspect that the funeral Mass will not be a Tridentine Mass and that Scalia’s priest son will not be allowed to preside.

Your link is based on criticism of Cruz by a spokesthing for Americans United for Separation of Church and State, an organization far less prominent than it used to be. Ted Cruz is a Baptist and not a Catholic but Americans United for Separation of Church and State is and always has been a viciously secular humanist organization of anti-Catholic bigots founded by the late and unlamented Paul Blanshard to try to starve parochial schools into oblivion among other goals. The TRUMPONIC Plague may wish to associate with such bigots but AUSCS speaking about Catholics is like the Ku Klux Klan addressing the work of Martin Luther King, Jr., Bayard Rustin or A. Phillip Randolph. Lately AUSCS has added a generally anti-Christian bias to its repertoire and so Ted Cruz is their new object of derision. After all, Ted has observed that when the POTUS is sued by the Little Sisters of the Poor, you just know something is wrong with POTUS.
My grandmother, and probably yours, used to say: Show me your friends and I'll tell you what you are. The reverse is also true. Show me your enemies and I'll tell you what you are. (Not you personally). If Americans United for Church and State despises Ted Cruz, then Ted can be proud of that fact. That is one more reason why I or any Christian should support him. Principled, thinking non-Christian lovers of liberty should support Ted likewise since his positions are quite compatible with their religious freedom as well.

Now, you seem to be favorably following the leade of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, an anti-Catholic bigotry group founded by the late and unlamented Paul Blanshard in the 1940s to starve parochial schools into extinction. To heed Blanshard on Catholicism is like heeding the Ku Klux Klan on the actual positives of Martin Luther King, Jr., Bayard Rustin and A. phillip Randolph.
Ted Cruz has never been a Catholic. He is a Baptist, but this Catholic is quite comfortable with a candidate who rose to the defense of the Little Sisters of the Poor, saying that when POTUS is sued by the Little Sisters of the Poor, you just know something is wrong with POTUS.
More recently, Americans United for Separation of Church and State has become a gratuitously anti-Christian organization. It is an enemy that Ted and his supporters can be justly proud of. Show me your (not you personally) friends (or your enemies) and I'll tell you what you are, as Grandma used to say.
There are some people who would call ted Cruz a "whack job" for defending Christianity ad people of other faiths as well. They are the sort who would condemn him for walking out on a funeral oration by the Marxist mass murderer, Raul Castro, who personally persecuted Teds dad when he was being tortured in Castro's prisons. Know what I mean?

Cruz thinks the government will sandblast religious symbols off of headstones.
To me that is crazy. As in Glenn Beck crazy. I suspect Beck told him to say it.
I think he is a phony and an opportunist.
The recent national polls tell me that I am not alone in arriving at this conclusion.

Jeff, I quit watching news TV the night Ophonybama was re-elected.
EVERY time I see him or hear him, I change the station or the channel!
Like you, I will be so glad when he is no longer in office.
Perhaps America can rebuild; I remain skeptical that we’ll be able to recover.

Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV) Despite Robert Byrd's well-known ties to the Ku Klux Klan, President Obama attended the Democratic senator's funeral. Obama gave a speech at the ceremony and called the late senator his friend. Not only was Byrd a former KKK recruiter and official - he also 'brought home the bacon' to the point of embarrassment. I'm stunned Obama went to his funeral.

Being a member of the mob isn't the sign of good judgment. Remember that it was the mob chanting "Give us Barabbas!"
Mob mentality is a dangerous mindset. It's almost always based on over-the-top emotions rather than sober assessment. Just ask Reginald Denny.

“Why would anyone want this vermin to attend their loved one’s funeral? I wouldn’t even want him at a goldfish’s funeral. Even in that case, the deceased would be on a higher level than him. Better he stay away than deliver a self-adulating speech honoring himself more than the deceased.”
Lots of great comments on FR for this article. Yours is the BEST.

You seem to be questioning my patriotism, my faith and my intelligence.
After seeing the reference to Limbaugh on your about page, I won't waste my time or yours trying to explain why I will vote for Trump.
Best of luck tomorrow night to you and your candidate.

Why two funeral homes? Why not have taken Scalia’s body back to Virginia?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2mbCCQ4XDg
The Cibolo ranch is so remote that the body couldn’t have been taken to a LOCAL funeral home there?
Sure thing.

It was none of those that I was questioning. It is your
judgment that concerns me. I do believe all you Trump supporters mean well; you're just dead wrong. And it's going to cost us all dearly. You'll have to excuse those of us who are terrified that we're losing our Constitutional Republic. We feel like we've been holding on by a thread during the entire Obama administration. Just when we could see another small government, Constitutional conservative in the mold of Ronald Reagan in the wings, Donald "The Chameleon" Trump appears on the stage. To our incredulity, he's taken seriously despite the fact that he's been all over the map, not just in his history but also in the months since he announced! This demonstrates that he has no true core convictions -- just whatever is politically expedient for him at the moment.
He has sized up his followers and truly understands that he has no limits placed on him. His point about shooting someone on 5th Avenue should have been taken seriously rather than laughed off. It's how he sees his supporters, and, sadly, y'all didn't recognize it for the insult that it was.
I am praying fervently that Cruz will defy the polls tomorrow night, but I'm praying more fervently that this Trump mania will end before we make the enormous mistake of electing an individual who will put the Constitutional Republic in the rearview mirror for the final time.
How do you lose a constitutional republic? The same way you eat am elephant -- one bite at a time.
