How Trump Bought the Conservative Movement
Accuracy in Media ^ | February 16, 2016 | Cliff Kincaid

It has become increasingly clear that the "self-funded" candidate in the Republican presidential primary, Donald J. Trump, will destroy the GOP's chances to win in November if he is not the nominee. Leftist groups are ecstatic over Trump’s "Bush lied, people died," mantra over the Iraq war. Internet trolls for Vladimir Putin are firmly behind Trump, saying he has the right recipe for accommodating Russia.

...

How did this happen? Conservatives who should know better went beyond praising his attacks on political correctness to welcoming him as a legitimate conservative candidate for president. Last year, Matt Schlapp, the chairman of the American Conservative Union (ACU) and co-founder of Cove Strategies, a lobbying firm, went on MSNBC and was asked by Chris Matthews if Trump is a "plausible president." He said "Yeah. Definitely. Definitely." He also said, "I actually know Donald Trump," in regard to some of the businessman's other controversial comments. Such remarks sent the message to conservatives nationwide that Trump was one of them.

Ironically, Schlapp is the former political director for President George W. Bush, now accused by Trump of lying to get the U.S. into the Iraq War. How well does Schlapp really know Trump?

It seemed to start when the ACU declared Trump "an American patriot" and announced he was addressing the 2013 conference of the ACU-sponsored Conservative Political Action Conference. That same year, his Donald J. Trump Foundation gave $50,000 to the ACU Foundation. The Donald J. Trump Foundation also gave $25,000 to The American Spectator Foundation, the organization responsible for publishing The American Spectator magazine...

“He did not buy a failed movement. He ignored all the Ideology and Philosophies and moves us toward practical politics and solutions.”

Not all of us are going to join the Trumpeteers and become liberal democrats under a new title. I don’t know what banner the Trump movement will end up with, Republican or Conservative, but I won’t be under it. I suspect he’ll gravitate back to the democrats, especially if he doesn’t get the Republican nomination. For years I’ve viewed the Republican party as the path to election for Conservatives. We may end up with a viable Conservative third or fourth party after this debacle.

There has never been one Conservative movement. The idea is pure fallacy. Why? Because we all have different priorities, and do not always--much to my personal sorrow--work together as we should, if we would really try to turn America back to her roots.

For my admittedly inadequate effort to be a peace maker between warring factions: Support For Trump & Cruz.

Trump is more Conservative, instinctively, than most of those who claim to be in the "Conservative Movement." He is admittedly new to the activist phase, and makes some mistakes in explaining his position. But the man is actually very Conservative in his basic orientation. Give him a little time to work out the inconsistencies.

“I have to agree with you.”

Just look at the comments on this site from Trump supporters about Conservatives. It’s pretty obvious.

Sorry, but when it counted, Trump spoke the loudest on immigration.

I was excited when Cruz entered the race first. He should of taken the opportunity to define the agenda.

He didn’t, Trump did.

Trump is the battering ram into a new era of Nationalism and Americans first. If he screws it up we will dump him and move on. This phony solidarity of the Establishment Republicans ( Cruz being one too) can't go on much longer. It will fall apart and more Nationalists will appear. Trump, or what Trump says he is, is the tip of the ice berg.

If Democrats wish to win the White House in 2016, they should vote for and elect Trump.Once past the Republican primary, if Trump is convinced he will build a larger coalition by moving to the left, he will. As Jimmy Carter said,Trump is malleable. He will dump his current base of supporters for a much larger base among the general population like he would a loose female after a one night stand. If Democrats will take him as he is now, they will be able to effectively flip him back into a New York Democrat even if he has a Republican label. The far left will never like him but he will trow them enough bones to even make Code Pink happy once in awhile. However, as far as principles, moral, and constitutional issues go, he will stake out the mushy middle and use the old Clintonian triagulation to try and keep popular support as high as he can. Using the art of making a deal, he will firm up support from the leftover establishment on the left and the right. He will not be an ideologue, but a broker to bring establishment powers at the top of the left and right together; and as for the people, Schl__g them.

How ridiculous? Trump is very far from being a Liberal Democrat. It was the second Bush Administration which abandoned what had been traditional Republican Conservative principles on trade, foreign affairs & the size of Government. That Trump has called them out on that, on issues where Republicans are now expected to tow a nonsensical line, is to his credit.

I will agree that he picked the wrong line of attack on the gross mistakes of the Bush Administration, in the Near East. But he understands the origins of the present mess. To understand what was wrong with George W.'s understanding of American purpose, see the juxtaposition of Washington's wisdom with the errant folly in the Bush II Second Inaugural Address: Bush/Washington Debate. (Note how truly relevant are the passages from Washington, quoted; how absurd the Bush misuse of the word "freedom"; etc..

Cruz proposed the wall in 2013 several years before Trump said anything about a wall.

“Looking at his long history of supporting government/business partnerships (taxpayer money propping up business) and his support for horrific decisions like Kelo, to me it appears that Trump is the biggest big overreaching government candidate in the race, with the possible exception of Sanders. His very recent rhetoric does nothing to make me see it otherwise.”

Exactly right. Trump is not a Conservative or a “populist”, he’s a big government liberal democrat and an OPPORTUNIST. Trump wins, democrats and big government win. He’s the fox in the hen house, the wolf in sheep’s clothing. Whether or not he wins the republican party is changed, or at least more exposed.

Trump didn’t buy the Conservative movement. He’s turning people against it.

The "conservative" movement sold us out.....Nicky Haley is just the latest example.

Do we really need a conservative President, don’t we already have a whole Congress full of Conservatives?

They are already making sure the President doesn’t get to enact a Liberal agenda, and I expect they will continue to do so.

If the GOP and other repukelicans pull their head out of their 3rd point of contact; they would realize that TRUMP is what happens when there is no leadership.

Hey, I’d vote for the guy over any rat, any day, but I will never fully endorse the man. He is a symptom to a much bigger problem.

That’s pretty obvious now.

Yeah, they see the "conservative" movement was not conservative at all.

We're tired of getting the knife in the back over and over.

Don't believe me, watch what they do with Obama's new SCOTUS appointment, then tell me why I should keep voting for them.
