Donald Trump is many things; billionaire businessman, global brand, reality TV star and lately, a polarizing U.S. presidential candidate.
But before all that, did you know that the man with a networth in excess of $4.5 billion was also a high school jock back in the day?
Oh yes. Turns out, "The Donald" was a three-sport athlete back at the New York Military Academy, playing baseball, football and --?? yup! --?? one season of varsity soccer.
Apparently Trump was pretty good, too.
In an interview with Business Insider a few months ago, Ted Levine, a former high school classmate, says Trump was so athletic he even could have turned pro in baseball.
"He was just the best, a good athlete, a great athlete," Levine told Business Insider. "He could have probably played pro ball as a pitcher. I think he threw 80 miles an hour. I was the catcher. He made my hand black and blue every day . . . Could he play football? Could he play soccer? He could do anything he wanted. He was physically and mentally gifted."

The 2-S classifications are Trump’s student deferments. The first two covered his time at Fordham University in the Bronx, and the second two allowed him to stay in school when he transferred to study business at the University of Pennsylvania. At the time, as Tigar wrote in his 1969 article, any college student who asked could get a student deferment. When he graduated in 1968, Trump’s classification shifted to 1-A, or "available for service."
Had that stood, Trump would have been drafted.
But Trump had a physical exam in September 1968. He had taken one less than two years earlier that did not disqualify him for service as we can tell from his 1-A classification in July 1968. However, his second physical was followed in October with a new classification, 1-Y. That designation put him near the bottom of any call-up list. It meant he would only be drafted if there were a national emergency.
Until recently, the only detail on record about that shift was it was medically related. After his comments about McCain, Trump said it had to do with bone spurs in his heels. Trump reportedly was active in college sports, playing baseball, tennis and squash.
A lot of people played sports in high school. Who cares.
An 80 MPH fastball is not going to get you anywhere
in professional baseball.
Where did Cruz serve?
LOL, I continue to entertained by the anti-Trumpers.
I couldn’t understand why an anti would post anything positive about trump, after clicking I understand.
Hehe.
One point for your side.
Probably won’t be enough come Saturday though.
It figures...
*GASP* He played Soccer!!! Forget it, I cannot support him now. Everyone knows soccer is a Communist plot.
Believe it or not even in the 60’s the military didn’t take just anybody. Some of my friends flunked the physical. Everybody and their brother got college deferments. Trump was no different than anybody else.
Gee, this could have been written about me. Except that I did Track and Cross Country in HS
Played varsity soccer and Track in college
Worked at a defense contractor and got a deferment for a few years until the lottery was implemented and then the draft board denied all deferments.
I was 1-A and was one number away from being drafted.
But I did not get called.
If drafted I had planned to serve, and in retrospect I probably would have enjoyed the service.
Now I thank everyone who did serve for their service.
KC
Why did he play a socialist sport with tie scores?
80mph ? Must have had a wicked curve as a fast ball that is not goign to get you into the Majors even in the 60’s
My father had a contact for the minors in ‘64 but did damaged his solder in football so did not get to take advantage of it, good for me of course as I would not be here had he gone to California.
His fast ball was in the 90’s by the reports of the scouts but with no radar gun it was just opinion. He did throw a no hitter in HS playoff(Texas) but put 2 men on first... was a bit wild and hit the batters.
Do you have a link detailing Cruz’s military service? Even if it military school? And Canadian service does not count.
Ted Cruz was born.... Dec 22, 1970
So I am pretty sure he wasn’t eligible for the draft for Vietnam
I see he was a three sport athlete. Good for him. When I went to HS, soccer is what you played if you couldn’t make the football or basketball team.
He played soccer?
Okay, there goes my vote..........................[Do I really need a /s?]
GMTA!..................
Oh, that's right. He didn't.
In fact, NOBODY in this year's presidential follies is a veteran.
That bothers me, a little.
>An 80 MPH fastball is not going to get you anywhere in professional baseball.
Back then it would.
