Itâs not every day that anti-war groups find themselves cheering on leading Republican presidential candidates. But, then again, this hasnât been a presidential campaign thatâs stuck to the script.
The morning after he called the Iraq War a huge misstep and argued that President George W. Bush lied to get the country into it, Donald Trump has earned praise from, of all places, Code Pink, the group best known for protesting the Iraq War and subsequent military interventions.
âI watched the debate last night and LOVED IT,â Code Pink co-founder Medea Benjamin said in an email.

I agree there are idiots in both camps. Wish there wasn’t. But the Trump camp is much more vocal and aggressive.
In the last five days I have seen Trump supports say:
“I don’t care that he isn’t conservative!”
This is on Freerepublic.
A year ago, if I said that a good third of Freepers would gleefully be supporting a candidate that was said to be malleable by Jimmy Carter, I would have seen “IBTZ” in the first three responses. It would be a ludicrous idea.
And yet, here we are...
This is the Republican Party these days. It’s a frickin’ joke.
Trump sometimes is hard to read about what he is joshing about and what he is dead earnest about.
This has garnered him a lot of opposition, not just don’t-cares, and he seems to be belatedly recognizing this. A candidate that you don’t have to read between the lines to understand, is simply a better one.
It actually shows YOUR position, as a conservativ-olater.
So register Democrat and make it easier on yourself.
Absolutely wrong, but what do we expect from someone that supports a registered Democrat that financially backed Hillary Clinton and the Democrat Party and was floating amnesty as late as 2013? The War in Iraq was a spectacular American victory that captured Baghdad in three weeks over one of the world’s largest militaries. The problem was that the we embarked on nation building and “Democracy” for Iraq while the Bush Administration adopted the religion of peace matra. As for WMDs, how much yellowcake uranium was recovered from Iraq, didn’t an Iraqi Air Force general that defected point out they used the 8 month window to fly the weapons out to Syria, and didn’t the Iraq War Resolution cite more than just WMDs as a basis for war? The fact is, like Donald Trump, your position can change on a whim. ISIS was born as a result of the Obama’s foreign policy; releasing captured terrorists, acting as al Qaeda’s air force in Libya, his embrace of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, abandonment of Iraq, stand down in Afghanistan..followed by this call to duplicate Libya by again having the U.S. Air Force cover Jihadists battling Assad’s forces, arming and financing Islamic terrorists in Syria (hello John McCain and Grahamnesty) combined with an overt hostility to our Israel allies, a desperation to conclude a nuclear agreement with the largest state sponsor of terrorism in the world (Iran), and tacit support for the Islamic ideology at a time when the Saudis outspend the former Soviet Union constructing mosques, funding mosque/clerics, and constructing multimillion dollar Islamic Studies centers at universities.
The No WMD Bush lied meme is one of the most important cornerstone’s of Anti American leftism.
Since Vietnam, we have labored under the anti American illusion that all uses of American military force are illegitimate.
Our intellectual elite tell us that the only just force is the killing of American police officers.
Trump’s shouting and interrupting last night was indistinguishable from the same rioters that plagued campuses 50 years ago.
We are required to kneel and bow before this Anti Conservative Plutocrat with New York values.
I am glad George W. Bush took out Saddam Hussein. I am glad we won that war.
I hate the anti-war pro genocide anti american movement.
Come and take it!
A Conservative Thinker you are not.
A Conservative Kneejerker you are.
You mean like a guy that sends out envelopes that say, “Check inside” or “Voting Violation”?
Honestly, who in their right mind thought Trump was actually going to nominate his sister, when he said right then she didn’t want it?
How many times have I heard a politician compliment a local by saying he’d nominate him for V.P., when everyone knew he’d never announce such an appointment like that?
I still say that some folks ignore what Trump has said for months, and then fixate on these moments claiming they are the gospel truth, because it fits their political strategy.
Was the war fought for pragmatism or for pride?
We HAVE to ask that, or we are going to get into more and more and more wars... fought for pride.
It was a screw up job! Nobody says we could not have ousted Saddam without trying to give a people a form of government that they can use about as well as a fish can use a bicycle.
I so wanted W to be right, that the ME would love democracy if given the chance. I haven’t said anything since, but now that Trump is talking about it, it’s true. It was a yuge mistake.
Now I do think there may have been some semblance of stability when Obama got in, and he threw that all to hell.
And why W never went after him for that I don’t know. That’s one of my biggest gripes about W, he never used the bully pulpit.
Trump did not merely argue that the Iraq war was ill-conceived or mishandled. He argued that George W. Bush lied about WMDs in Iraq.
Is it your position that Bush lied about WMDs in Iraq?
If you can support a candidate that's been lauded for being “mailable” by the 2nd worst president in modern history because he has no core belief system and can change on a dime and then go on to rationalize that issue agreement by a group like Code Pink is simply a one-off then it's your call, freewill is a gift.
Fact is Trump is very new to the Conservative fight because he decided to run for president. Every so often he shows his liberal slip (Affirmative Action is good, PP does good things, Universal health care, go after big Pharma) and his supporters circle the wagons and defend him as “just shooting from the hip” and “a winner in business.”
And no, I'm not for war with Syria and neither is Cruz. Rubio probably. So we can agree there.
People just don’t want to follow the dynamic aspects of reality. And from one point of view this is understandable. Knowing God is the key! Knowing what God wants, and then knowing how people have sinned against it, is the key to understanding history. Otherwise we are stuck forever with one heuristic against another heuristic and no real tie breaker between the ideas.
And this is why I am also NOT ga-ga over Cruz as he stands now. He has a bushel basket over his light. His walk is still primarily a world walk. IF THIS CHANGED then I would change my preference in a New York minute. Trump is worldly, but he is pretty honest as worldly goes.
I don’t. I think there have been three moments which have made me shade away from Donald Trump.
- When he couldn’t define conservative in the debate.
- When Jimmy Carter said he knew Donald Trump was malleable
- When he waffled on funding for Planned Parenthood
The first told me he didn’t understand conservatism aside from the financial aspect.
The second confirmed that someone outside the conservative movement didn’t “trust” Trump’s principles.
The third told me that he makes comments and decisions without considering the implications.
Granted, he has gotten much better on messaging since the Planned Parenthood waffle, but it stuck with me and fed some doubts I had.
But expressing any doubts about Donald Trump has turned more than a few Freepers into human pinatas, knocked about and attacked for their opinions, views and questions by a dedicated group of posters who don’t defend Trump so much as go after anyone not of the “faith.”
It smacks of a cult-of-personality and it is very scary. This could be the seeds of the end of Freerepublic, and that would be a tragedy.
I’m stupid?
You’re voting for a liberal democrat and I’m stupid.
Whatever.
You should be put in a political ad so republican primary voters can see that Trumpeteers are no better than the registered Democrat they’re supporting by completely ignoring the two terms of Barack Hussein Obama along with a catastrophic foreign policy with respect to Russia, Libya, Afghanistan, Egypt, Israel, Syria, Iraq, Iran and umerous other examples.
With respect to the first, Trump is an Outback kind of guy. No rules, just right!
My personal thoughts when Bush first decided to invade was -”He is trying to avenge the attack on his father.” Next, I could not believe he was so dumb as to fight Hussein who was the only one keeping Iran out of Iraq.
A Trump-supporter's position is whatever it needs to be at that moment in order to validate Donald Trump's views.
btw, I have been waiting 15 years now for someone to cite the lie that Bush told. FIFTEEN YEARS! Still, no one can come up with it. State of the Union address? True. Authorization for use of force? True. But I gotta admit I never ever dreamed that I would hear FR members parroting the "Bush lied" meme on this forum.
