In the staunchly pro-military state of South Carolina - where the next Republican primary will be held - the issue of Donald Trump's draft deferments is likely to be central

As the US presidential election reaches the pro-military state of South Carolina, the Republican front-runner Donald Trump is set to become embroiled in a new controversy: the story of how his bony feet kept him out of the Vietnam War.

The southern state is home to eight military bases and 58,000 veterans, and 25 per cent of those expected to take part in Saturday's primary vote for the Republican nominee are either serving or former members of the armed forces.

Mr Trump, who has led polls in South Carolina since July, received a deferment from the Vietnam draft because he had bone spurs in both heels....

No, Ted Cruz was a baby in CANADA during the end of the Vietnam War. His parents didn’t formally apply for him to became an American citizen until 1986! He was still a CANADIAN in 2014!

If Donald Trump had been drafted, he would have ended up in the Supply Corps. Probably building and running barracks in the rear area, or Officer Clubs stateside. Get real. You know how the military works.

Didn’t Cruz’s dad fight for Castro?

Hmmmm....wouldn’t this exactly be what the founders were worried about?

“Royal Mounties?”

LOL, that’s funny. Did Yeb Bush ever serve in the military? I think not.

One of my best friends had to leave the Army on the late 80s because he would not give up his Canadian citizenship.

No one can seriously believe a protected NYC prep school boy with a REAL future ahead of him was going into the military

And as a Gulf War Veteran, Iraq Veteran, and an Officer still serving in the Army, I support Trump 100%.

Tidbit off the web from Joe Conason blog in 2015:

“In 1972, according to Bush dynasty biographer Kitty Kelley, Jeb drew number 26 in the Vietnam draft lottery, a stroke of bad luck that likely meant his induction the following year.

Jeb then told his parents, George H.W. and Barbara, that he might file for “conscientious objector” status in order to avoid the draft. Applying to become a “C.O.” was a way out then available only to young men who opposed all war, usually on religious grounds — but not if, like Jeb, they merely opposed the conflict in Southeast Asia.

Barbara Bush said that her husband assured Jeb: “Whatever you decide…I will back you 100 percent,” regardless of his own military service in World War II and his full-throated support for the Vietnam War.”

Not likely, since he emigrated to the US in 1957.

Nice try at planting misinformation, Trumpboner.

My now deceased younger brother tried to join the U.S. Navy but had a physical issue. He was extremely down-hearted about not being able to be in the military.

There are certain things that will keep people out of the military.....small, insignificant, physical issues.

Even so, Castro had a lot of people fooled. He was not even a Communist, until the Soviets made him a deal he couldn’t refuse.

"Silly, they don't have a draft in Canada!"

Many of the American draft dodgers and deserters during the Vietnam War era fled to Canada.   (Canada did not support America's efforts in Southeast Asia at the time -- you can read about that here, for instance.)
