Trump Has Huge Lead Over Cruz in Two SC Polls

by Cathy Burke
Donald Trump has a commanding lead in the GOP presidential primary field in South Carolina in two new polls – including one in which the real estate billionaire has more than double the support of his nearest rival, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.

The surveys, the South Carolina House Republican Caucus, and the Opinion Savvy Poll, come just eight days ahead of the Palmetto State's Feb. 20 primary.

Here's the breakdown in the South Carolina House Republican Caucus survey:
Trump beats the competition among conservatives, moderates, libertarians, independent and across age groups – and even edges out Cruz with tea party Republicans, 37 percent to 36 percent.

The results were posted by The Hill.

In the Opinion Savvy survey, the results show:

How’come the National Populism described in Romans 1 didn’t get conserved?

Isn’t defining conservatism pivotal at this point? Is it that you know you are going to vote for a compromise candidate and are okay with that but you don’t want others to know on this site? Maybe you won’t admit to yourself that by being a single-issue voter you have become what you despise on the other side? I dunno. I’m just looking for a candidate that reflects my political viewpoint.

I’ll start. Here’s conservative ideal number 1.

Mr. Government, leave me alone and let me pursue happiness without your interference.

“People are not dogs. A refusal to jump through your hoop in no way suggests it can’t be done. It can easily be done; you just have a knack, a gift, really, of making people NOT want to do it.”

Even a dog has to have some motivation.

And HLPhat makes me want to slap him/her. Browbeating and being condescending are not great motivators.

No need to intimate what you’ve repeatedly DEMONSTRATED.

You’re as repetitive and dull as a one-trick pony.

But I’m happy to ruffle your feathers, you deserve it!

Never argue with a zealot.

Although Cruz claims that he is not running for Pastor-in-Chief, you sure can’t tell that by his supporters.

No, and focusing on that sort of label is counterproductive. Talk issues and outcomes, not labels.

Thank you for your eloquent answer. I don’t think Trump is my guy but I am truly without a candidate at this point so I suppose he could be. If he wasn’t so petulant, I would be more easily swayed. But that’s just me.

What are the ideological principles that motivate Conservatives then?

(Hint - it’s not the tyrannical majority of the populist nationalist mob)

I am talking about issues and outcomes. So far, Trump has been words. Lots and lots of words. He says “trust me.” I’m not sure I do. Conservatism used to define a set of beliefs, but you are right. It has lost its meaning.

Will Trump cause government to stop intruding into my life?

Will Trump roll back the size of government?

Will Trump promote freedom for all?

We simply don’t know at this point and have to place our faith in him being a man of his word. I just can’t trust him that intimately.

I've been without a candidate too, many times. I leave the ballot blank for that slot. Usually, my vote is meaningless, being a conservative in a liberal-controlled regime, so I can get away with effectively not participating.

I also have a point of view that the vote is mostly a tool to keep the masses from getting restive. When both parties are "in it together," the outcome of the vote doesn't affect the people, it only determines which elites get the better perks.

Thanks for demonstrating the “Nationalist Populist” inability to enumerate the ideological principles of Conservatism.

My species doesn’t have feathers.

When do you start molting?

I think the answer to all three of your questions is "Yes."

Talk to some of the people who work for him. Mistrust is healthy, you should have that for EVERYBODY, especially for those who aspire to an office of trust.

So in other words you’re a populist herd animal who has no ability to articulate the principles of Conservatism?

Principled Conservatism? Like voting for the treaty clause busting Corker bill? Like campaigning for Obama’s TPA with Ryan? Like a Super PAC that accepts millions in anonymous money laundered donations? That kind of principled conservatism?

Been reading a lot of old Trump interviews and the parts of his books where he discusses politics.

It seems his main concern is that the far right and the far left have controlled the two parties to the detriment of the people in the middle.

Not that this is a shock, but he isn’t going to be a bastion of right wing conservative values.

He does seem to be a man driven to succeed and now he feels the need to help America succeed.

So far his definition of success is securing our border, getting rid of Obamacare, supporting our Vets, making America secure, and bringing jobs back to America.

His methods for doing those things will likely not fall neatly into either right wing or left wing ideology.

Just as Obama’s promise to fundamentally change America didn’t mean what many had hoped, I don’t think the methods Trump will use to achieve his goals are what many are envisioning.

One thing for sure - it will be a very interesting 4 (or 8) years if he gets elected.

Agreed, but this is presidential politics and you got two mega type a personalities who don’t want to play second fiddle to anyone else. That said, I know we all talk about a Trump/Cruz ticket, and that would seem impossible with the rhetoric between the two of them, but if you really want to bust the GOP and the establishment to smithereens and start over this would be the duo that would get it done.
