NBC's Jackson, Tur Try, Fail to Get Trump to Say Rubio Hurt in ABC Debate

Catching up with Donald Trump in the "spin room" after Saturday's GOP debate, NBC's Hallie Jackson attempted to get Donald Trump to say who he thought "lost" the GOP debate, hoping, perhaps, to get the New Hampshire frontrunner to attack Sen. Marco Rubio. For his part, Trump refused to take the bait.

"Who do you think, of your rivals, underperformed tonight, Mr. Trump," Jackson asked. "Well, I know who they're all saying underperformed on the Internet, and I know the, your coworkers are all saying... but I don't want to say," Trump replied.

"Besides you, who won the debate tonight," Jackson followed up. Again, Trump demurred. "I just don't want to say.... It's not really my, it's your position to say."

"He didn't want to talk about Marco Rubio because he didn't want to get in between the media and Marco Rubio," Matthews observed a few moments later.

For his part, when asked minutes later by NBC's Katy Tur about Rubio, Trump again refused to take the bait, noting, "I have a very good relationship with Marco."

NBC's Jackson, Tur Try, Fail to Get Trump to Say Rubio Hurt in ABC Debate

Here's the transcript:

MSNBC Special edition of Hardball February 6, 2016; 11:12 p.m. Eastern graphic: Trump Reacts to Tonight's GOP Debate

HALLIE JACKSON, NBC News: Who do you think, of your rivals, underperformed tonight, Mr. Trump.

DONALD TRU MP: "Well, I know who they're all saying underperformed on the Internet, and I know the, your coworkers are all saying -

JACKSON: You've already checked your Twitter?

TRUMP: They've all told me. But I don't want to say, I mean, you'll see. But they say I performed very well, so, that's what matters.

JACKSON: Besides you, who won the debate tonight?

TRUMP: I think, I just don't want to say. I mean, I do have a feeling as to who did well, who did poorly, a couple of them did poorly, but, I really don't, it's your position to say.

JACKSON: You're passing on sort of [unintelligible]

TRUMP: It really is.

11:26 p.m. Eastern graphic: Trump Reacts to Tonight’s GOP Debate

TRUMP: Morning Joe and Mika and everybody are saying we won easily. And that was very cool. They just tweeted it out: Trump killed it tonight.

I think it was very important that I do that. I wanted to do very well tonight.

KATY TUR, NBC News: And how'd you feel about Marco Rubio's performance? He got hit pretty hard by Gov. Christie.

TRUMP: Well, he's being hit very hard on the Twitter. And, I dunno, I mean, I don't want to comment on anybody else's performance because I actually, I have a very good relationship with Marco. But I don't want to comment on his performance. He's being hit pretty hard.

I thought Rubio just came out the other day and claimed that it would be amnesty first, then secure the border?

Rubio was still saying he prefers amnesty as well last night it’s just that it’s not politically feasible to pass amnesty now.

Explains Rubio’s chutzpah, he knows he’s got VP sewn up.

These displays of idiocy aren’t even remotely similar to a “debate”. They are ugly, coarse displays of people at their worst. I think the long, slow decline started when they started calling each other by their names instead of “The esteemed senator from Vermont’. Then it went to a first name basis. Now, it’s little more than a 2:00AM barroom brawl by a bunch of suburbanites with a lot more bark than bite. It’s worse than that, actually - it’s like gladiators in a coliseum killing each other for the amusement of the upper class (if you can use the word “class” in any way to describe the moderators, who are mostly news wonks).

I would like to see debates (on both sides) abolished entirely unless they can be done properly - that is, an actual debate of ideas.

I believe that these so-called debates have contributed a great deal to the ever-declining opinion that citizens have of politicians.

So when Trump said he knows a lot of great people to get things done I guess that excludes his VP?

I like a Trump-Rubio ticket too

Well, let's see. Trumps strongest suit is immigration, while that's rubios weakest. Choosing rubio would make Trump seem disingenuous and weakening on immigration. It makes no sense and Trump won't do it.

No question, Rubio is weak on amnesty to illegals based on his gang of 8 history. However I would much rather see Rubio campaigning for Trump rather than Kasich or Bush. 2 old white guys on ticket will be exploited by MSM. Rubio is more gifted politician than Bush & Kasich. And he could get some Hispanics to vote for the ticket.

As VP, he can not force amnesty on Trump, even if he wanted to. And he is a good contrast of youth with Trump approaching age 70 this year. Last but not least, Florida is more critical than Ohio.

Don’t know. Not comfortable with that so I’m not even going to think about it, for now. Would prefer the nominee (Cruz or Trump) pick Sessions.

I don't viscerally dislike Rubio either, although I think he is entirely too inexperienced to head a national ticket. Christie exposed that brilliantly.

Except for his awful mistake with the Gang of 8 Bill, he's been a fairly reliable conservative vote.

I think he sees the error of his ways on that, and he'd have done himself a huge service if he straightforwardly acknowledged that it was a bad decision, ask forgiveness, and move on. His Clintonesque denial of what he plainly did earns him no brownie points.

8 years of paying dues in the VP slot will go a long way towards seasoning him.

If Trump is the nominee he does not have to choose any of these. He loves to play head games with the nasty media

FWIW, this AM in that interview, Rubio did a pretty good job about explaining where he’s coming from concerning the invasion of the US. It sounds like he’s solid about stopping it.

If Trump is the nominee he does not have to choose any of these...

Maybe he’d consider Gingrich.

Donald at Trump events always says “I like Marco, we get along”.

Trump is a pragmatic businessman. If Rubio is the best VP choice to help Trump win election he will pick him.

Ever notice neither Rubio or Trump attack eachother at debates?

Its like Cruz used to be when he had his Bromance with Donald.

Not to worry, Rubio stays on script, and Trump will hand him a new script that says no amnesty. That will be Rubio’s concession to get the Trump VP spot, and 8 years as VP.
