The senators' message to the officer tapped to lead the fight in Afghanistan on Thursday was clear: just tell us how many troops you need, and we'll make it happen.
The Pentagon announced on Wednesday that Lt. Gen. John Nicholson would be nominated to take over as leader of U.S. and coalition troops in Afghanistan when Gen. John Campbell steps down. Less than a day later, Nicholson appeared before the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday.
*********snip*********
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., described problems the Afghan forces have faced over the past year, including a resurgence of the Taliban and the rise of Islamic State in the Khorasan peninsula. The chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee said he sees the security situation in Afghanistan as "deteriorating rather than improving."
"I agree with your assessment," Nicholson said.
The general said Afghan forces, while he praised their bravery and will to fight, were not able to make planned advances because the Taliban attacked more aggressively than officials had expected.

As for more details on the current situation there since obama tucked in his serpent tail and left...

They already have everything they need and wanted, and it appears to be working rather well for them.

Mexican Cartels Buying Afghan Heroin
Golly Gee and here I thought the heroin was going to russia. No wonder Petraeus is a North American Union guy. Small, small world.
a little internet searching regarding the “New Heroin Epidemic” that started almost IMMEDIATELY upon our taking over Afghanistan yields some rather surprising correlations!
and of course we CAN NOT Build a Wall on our Southern Border, because WE NEED THE WAR ON DRUGS more than you could ever possibly imagine. 3 out of 4 Law Enforcement JOBS DEPEND ON IT.
While the number of troops may be a factor, the rules of engagement pose the major problems. I certainly hope that General Nicholson points that out.
That being said, we should have been out of that unwinnable morass yesterday.
General: a new commander-in-chief
If I were a “top general”, the first thing I would do is ask that odumbo be removed from the decisions and his “veto power” absolved. Then I would ask that should our troops be sent ANYWHERE in the world they be allowed to shoot before the enemy shoots first. If we EVER GO TO BATTLE, we go to win or we don’t go.
(I believe Trump also supports that)
Copy THAT!
Hmmm. Great debate question. “What is your view of the current ROE and what changes do you plan to implement?”
“Great debate question. ‘What is your view of the current ROE and what changes do you plan to implement?’”
Yes, it would be.
This fall will end 15 years there. The idiots want to keep the meatgrinder going another few decades cot the defense industry.
We have already spent 3 times the length of WWII there. It should be obvious that there is no pan to “win” there.
And B that they will never be civilized as long as we respect islam.
It will fall the day we leave.
It tears my heart out seeing the servicemen unnecessarily killed and maimed, all because we try to fight a politically correct war.
I would venture to say that the rolls of VA hospital patients would be markedly reduced if the ROE were changed.
JOB ONE: Review the Rules of Engagement and make them sane.
Think ISIS + Taliban is a possibility or will they continue fighting until the Messiah (the True Messiah) comes?
The Obama officials sure seem blindsided by their expectations, on everything.
Not blindsighted, IMHO, part of the agenda.
There is no meat grinder. There is no ball game and a termination clock .......they are delusions
to even think of time limits is to illustrate a lack of understanding of the reality
history is a process, not an event
No substitute for victory.
First thing we should have done was to nuke the poppy fields.
Excellent debate question.
