Take a look at the 2005 Political Typology report by the Pew Center. Note well that this came out over a decade ago. That is, before the economic crash of 2007-08, and before disillusionment with the Iraq War and the Bush administration had taken hold.
Here are the relevant takeaways:
A total of 46 percent of registered voters â Republicans and Republican-leaning independent â had in 2005 a political profile that fits with the Trump brand.

Trump is the Godzilla of the GOP. The arrogance of the GOPe lead to his creation. Now he is going to torch and stomp on them. I think this the money quote:
Look, I believe that Donald Trump is basically a pagan. I believe that Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, who are his chief rivals now, are sincere, prayerful Christians. But I also am entirely convicted that a President Cruz or a President Rubio would, in the end, do exactly what Big Business wanted, and screw the Christians â not because they have anything against Christians, but because they know who calls the shots in the GOP.

... a President Cruz or a President Rubio would, in the end, do exactly what Big Business wanted, and screw the Christians -- not because they have anything against Christians, but because they know who calls the shots in the GOP. I don't necessarily disagree with this statement, but I'm scratching my head over one thing:
Why would the author assume that the only "big businessman" in the GOP race -- who has spent a career cutting deals with politicians from everywhere along the political spectrum -- would act any differently?

The establishment has a tried-and-true method of dealing with populists, and it usually involves a crazy lone gunman or a mysterious plane crash.

He's Presbyterian. Not quite pagan, just "Predestined". He also grew up in Norman Vincent Peale's (Power of Positive Thinking) church. Glen Beck did an interview this evening on CNN that made me extremely angry. He has deducted that Trump is a narcissist, and he never says "we" will make America great. That's a lie. I've seen every speech Trump has made and he says, "We are going to make America great again. Trump was raised by a business man. Business has been his life. He thinks in "deals". He is a New Yorker. Ever met a real New Yorker who wasn't bombastic? I don't sense any nefarious underpinning in Trump. He may be excessive and has a carnival barker's persona, but that's not a bad thing. He would be embarrassed if he didn't do what he said he would do.

Sorry — I responded to the wrong post. I was replying to someone who asked about whether I read Trump’s book. LOL.
