An Iowa win might make the Trump train unstoppable

Ted Cruz and Donald Trump do agree on one thing--if Trump wins Iowa, he might be unstoppable on his way to winning the Republican presidential nomination.

And they are not alone.

A wide range of senior Republicans told POLITICO that if Trump wins Iowa, he'll more than likely be the nominee. One factor they repeatedly pointed to: An Iowa victory over Cruz would validate opinion polls showing him in command of the race. The Trump phenomenon would officially become a reality.

Mike McSherry, a longtime campaign consultant and former executive director of the Republican Governors' Association, said: "If Trump wins Iowa, I don't know how you'd stop him. All these guys are going to be chewing each other's throats out for second place."

A top official of a rival GOP campaign, speaking anonymously to avoid offending his candidate, said: "If Donald Trump wins Iowa, I think he has won--period. Ted Cruz is supposed to win Iowa. If Trump wins, he'll be on a trajectory to come out of the SEC primaries [March 1] with close to triple the delegates of anyone else."

One of the nation's best-known Republican strategists, speaking on condition of anonymity because of his close connections to the leaders of several of the campaigns, said: "Only Trump can stop himself. All his opponents can do is cause him to do things that make him less appealing."

For weeks, Trump has been telling his crowds here that he thinks a win in the Feb. 1 caucuses would enable him to "run the table."

Bzzt. I don’t care if he is winning *primary* polls among the other GOP candidates. My point is to look at the head-to-heads for a general. The picture is neither clear, nor pretty there. In most cases, the best he can do is a statistical tie.

Cruz has outperforming him in many of these polls.

So, if you want to give the election to Hillary, vote for Trump in the primaries.

Yep. And my wife. And my parents. And my sister and husband. And my best friend. And others.

The funny thing is that there isn’t even a consideration of “should we...?” Each person is pretty convicted - “Not Trump!”

Just look at the threads on FR where the question is asked. You’ll get a few “not Cruz” posts, but 2-1 or 3-1 saying “no way” to Trump. More people will crossover to Cruz. Far fewer will even consider Trump.

So, our primary process is picking a loser and the press loves it. I’m surprised more people here don’t see it.

I didn’t get my way with McCain, but I held my nose and voted for him anyway, mostly because of Palin. I didn’t get my way with Romney, but I held my nose and voted for him anyway. (You can go back farther and start talking about Dole, if we want.)

We’re sick of holding our nose and voting for losers. We’re sticking to principle. Call it “taking our ball home” if you want, but we’re done.

No. Trump is a changeling. Cruz is to the core.

make him Attorney General...Hillry goes to jail then....garanteed.

You know, I used to be a strong advocate for Cruz as USSC judge. Now, I'm not sure. Cruz had his opportunity last night to stand all alone as alpha-dog, and every report I've read indicates that he blew it.

When the spotlight was directly on him, he couldn't handle the pressure.

The problem I see with American voters is television and movies. Seriously consider the fact that Reagan was a movie star. Trump is a tv star. The average American is a marketing tool programmed to respond, not think first.

I dunno. Maybe. I’d have to think about it. After all, I only put the McCain sign on my lawn after Palin joined the ticket. The question is whether or not I feel like someone with an ego like Trump would even listen to Cruz.

With all due respect, is it not possible that Trump's persona is just that... and that he is really a very down to earth person?

His persona, lots of hype, hurling insults, etc., is kind of a New York thing. Remember, you ought to take into account that some of these people, Trump included, have been brought up in an environment where it is a little more rough-and-tumble than others.

In other words, if Trump is such a jerk, why do New Yorkers like him so much, even the Rats?

My thinking is this: Trump will pick Cruz as VP. Trump may tire of POTUS after one term, because of his age. Maybe not. Cruz will keep Trump in line and keep conservatives happy about Trump. Trump will groom Cruz and vice versa. Trump-Cruz will be one or two terms, hopefully two. Either way Cruz will have made such a good impression on the voters that he will be a shoo-in for POTUS when his time comes.

Please consider that scenario.

I am hoping for it. The country could do a lot of healing in 12 or 16 years (or even 8) of Trump-Cruz or some permutation of that.

Ted Cruz birth certificate and his residency in the United States since he was four are just fine for establishing him as a US Citizen, from birth, under the current immigration law. His problem is that the requirements for natural-born citizenship are more restrictive.

This maneuver on Cruz’s part is reminiscent of the “I’m liquidating my assets to run for Sentate” gambit, where he didn’t list the loans on his campaign FEC report. That would have conflicted with the campaign narrative. It’s that little compromise of the truth that allows the New World Order people to get a hook into him. So Donald Trump is correct, Cruz is owned by his donors.

Someone posted this link to me:

If Trump’s persona was just a public display, why would he leave that private phone message?

“Cruz couldn’t win 8 primaries to get nominated even if he was eligible.”

that IS the GOP Presidential Convention threshold to claim even a single delegate, namely outright majority winner of at least 8 states.

Yeah, Trump could actually afford to lose in Iowa. Cruz absolutely CAN NOT lose. (Naturally, the other candidates are already irrelevant.)
