GOP insiders: It was a rough night for Ted Cruz
Politico ^ | 01/29/16 | Steven Shepard

Posted on 01/29/2016 5:25:37 AM PST by 20yearsofinternet

In the final debate before Iowa's first-in-the-nation caucuses, Ted Cruz had the worst night of the seven GOP presidential candidates on stage Thursday.

That's according to a plurality of the Republican members of The POLITICO Caucus - a panel of strategists, operatives and activists in Iowa and the other three February-voting states: New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada. The insiders participated in the survey immediately following the debate in Des Moines, an event more notable for the absence of Iowa and national poll-leader Donald Trump than anything else.

More than 4-in-10 GOP insiders - given the choice of the seven GOP candidates on the stage, plus Trump - rated Cruz as the loser of Thursday night's debate, citing his defensive posture on his past immigration stances and opposition to ethanol subsidies.

"He seemed plastic and insincere," said one Iowa Republican, who, like all respondents, completed the post-debate survey anonymously. "The crowd clearly liked Gov. [Terry] Branstad a lot more than they like Ted Cruz."

Submitted with a grain of salt, as Politico's "insiders" have been pretty anti-Cruz and anti-Trump week-to-week. Their post-debate opinions usually line up with the general consensus, though.

Cruz did not show well last night - and he’s been one of my top choices since the beginning. His “humor” was a bust and his positions malleable.

no, it was always meant to be for cruz if trump wasn’t there because that left wing slut gets her marching orders from the RINO/COC and she was told to try and destroy trump and then cruz and hope rubio gains traction and if not, that hillary BEATS trump

yes, they would MUCH rather have that.

i beat on trump alot, but i’ll die before i dont vote for him in the generals.

i HATE the dmms, the repubs except for a few, and the socialist.

Cruz and Trump, though the latter in my opinion is not conservative, at least love the country and will put it first, and that KILLS the tramp and manbo Ailes and his decrepit leader Murdoch.

they can all go stragiht to #$@#$ing hell. or jail.

or both.

how many people actully watched this nonsense last night?

anyone with a brain knew they were gonna kill cruz.

they’re NOT for trump Or cruz, they HATE both.

those @#$@#$@$@s. those @#$@#$@#$ @#$@#$ @#$@#$@ @#$@#$s.

again, cursing in italian and english. second time in a month.

..Audienced packed with Paul people. Cruz did very well, Fox’s ambush video notwithstanding. They would have tried the same thing with Trump. They were clearly out to take out Cruz and Trump if they could—but they didn’t...

Kelly showed video clips of Cruz to support her question/accusation. I have never seen that before. I didn’t watch much of the debate do I don’t know if she did it for all. It struck me as very unusual and even unfair.

Had Cruz and Carson pulled out and joined Trump’s Vet’s Show, the debate would have collapsed.

Cruz, not realizing that he would be torn apart without Trump, shows he is not ready to lead the nation. The Senate, yes, but he needs seasoning and needs a great mentor, like Donald Trump.

I am saddened because I see Ted Cruz as a critical part of the team that takes apart the DC Uni-Party and disposes it.

Even if true, how many watched? Viewership has to have tanked.

I lost interest with the excessive number of candidates.... And the horrible moderation.

Next week the debate last night will be shown to have been irrelevant

Trump will win and Cruz will be second

the debate was in the words of Macbeth, sound and fury signifying nothing

come on? how could he not know? i knew and i’m a halfwit.

i think he figured it didn’t matter as it was a last ditch attempt to get votes from trump.

but it DID matter because it hurt him.

KEEP the integrity. it is NOT gonna happen this time. he is young and brash, even in our 40s, i should know, we men are still brash.

he will recover and learn and be around to fight in until 2024, when he will win.

trump and he will patch things up.

if that jerkoff bush, who invented the voodoo economics term, got on Reagan’s good side again, these guys can too.

I HATE meagan, ailes, murdoch, hume (who it is rumored meagan slept with to get her own show) and a number of others at fox now.

used to love them. stopped watching 10 months ago when i realized what they were.

couldn’t put a gun to my head and make me watch now.

where’s CHarlton Heston when you need him?

Damn them, damn them all to hell.

Recommend grabbing a barf bag:

It’s all over the Media this AM: Jeb won. Ted Cruz is the devil himself. Megyn Kelly was a professional and did an outstanding job. You may now hurl....

If a candidate is a “loser” for opposing the crony capitalism of federal mandates and the government being involved in managing the economy by picking winners and losers, I guess I am a loser too. Cruz is the only one with the principles and guts to take a stand on this issue.

I think he knew but Trump pretty much boxed him in. There was no way he could drop out of the debate and not look like he was following Trump. And then he compounded his error by basically saying Trump was too chicken to debate. He would have picked up a lot more votes if he had simply said "You know what, I have to give credit where credit is due. Donald is right to skip this. These debates are nothing but an opportunity for the left to try and take out anyone who is not a moderate or liberal member of the establishment. I'm going to go. I don't expect I'll get fair treatment. I expect I'll be beat up. But the thing to take away from this is that the process is broken. "

Did you see Kelly’s interview with Cruz right after the debate? In the interview, she said she had further researched his involvement and amendments on that “gang of eight” bill, and that Cruz was indeed correct that it was a “poison pill”, and that he was in fact trying to scuttle the bill.

i’m so @#$@#$ing mad, i have no intention of recognizing the winner of POTUS if it is not Trump or Cruz.

what the heck, dems do it all the time with judges. violate the will of the people.

i hope i dont get in trouble here, but i am stating now that the press, the rep establishment, and all dems are traitors and I will not abide by the 2016 decision if their traitorous ways give rubio, hillary or bernie the election.

i’m pretty sure trump will keep them in court forever if need be.

i have my pitchfork out already.
