The hit will probably go on as planned. The muslim woman will just target Cruz instead. She hates him as well.

Kelly regards herself as a Hollywood (or at least Broadway) star, given the seemingly endless parade of magazine covers, glamourous photoshoots, etc.

She - and, crucially, her agent - have been trying to ‘build her brand’ from the off. She - and Fox - play up her cocktail glove/iron fist image. As her profile has risen, her politics have veered sharply towards the usual cold Manhattanite oatmeal.

It does not require a leap of imagination to see her jumping to one of the Big Three networks. It would gut Fox, who have put much time, money and effort into promoting her and the MSM would parade her as a convert who finally escaped the evil Murdochian Tea Party cult. Right now there is no iconic female host among the Big Three with Couric fading into obscurity and the morning show Aqua Net airheads barely able to string a sentence together.

Kelly wouldn’t mind the change as long as the fawning headlines, limos and puff pieces continued. Her commuter route to work would change only slightly. She could talk about things other than politics and the occasional weather disaster.

and every candidate - including Ted Cruz - will have a decision to make. "Will I side with this Muslim apologist, or will I defend Donald Trump?

How about Ted saying...
"Donald has no real foundation for his beliefs so he is unable to publicly defend them. He picks some red meat for the gullible base voters and throws it to them in the hopes he can trick them into voting for him. That is why he is afraid to come here and answer your questions. He doesn't know how to defend his beliefs. I, on the other hand, am not. My beliefs are rooted in.....and that is why I think we should........." ?

The Repubs, for many election cycles now (think Candy Crowley, the first Fox debate with Kelly on an assassin’s mission & the other ‘gotcha’ debate that was so bad) have been going to debates with hostile, biased moderators like lambs to the slaughter. Why the RNC puts up with this, I don’t know. If you’ve watched Kelly/FOX for the last week or so (I don’t but some in my household do so I can’t totally avoid it) she has been giving the unhinged Glenn Beck lots of face time & also the NRO Trump knockers have been prominently featured. Reports have been that FOX was working on a Trump “kill shot”. The debates, at this point, are pretty worthless, IMO. I think it was a bold move for Trump to say he won’t subject himself to this sort of behavior by Kelly who is only out to make a big name for herself - any claims to “journalism” are ridiculous. The debate was not to showcase Repub candidates & let them debate their policy positions, it was going to be a cage match between Kelly & Trump. Trump is the only one to stand up to this & for himself & say “screw you”. It will either prove to be a masterful move in the eyes of the electorate or his Waterloo.

Even though he won't be there, the debate will be about Donald Trump

I don't like Donald Trump, never have, but I do appreciate two things about him. One, he has used his oversized foot to break down a locked door and barge past filters that the news establishment would have used to blanket and silence anyone else on the subject of illegal immigration. I've got no confidence at all that he meant any of it but his sheer chutzpah and opportunism put the subject and how most Americans feel about it on page one above the fold.

And two, one doesn't have to be a fan to appreciate pure skill on display. Trump makes it look like he's calculated nothing but the results (so far ... things may still change when actual votes begin coming in) indicate he's been playing chess on everybody's checkerboard.

Everyone should take note that Trump has known full well about this debate for months but can’t stop seething about Megyn Kelly’s question 5 MONTHS AGO!!!

If Trump can’t manipulate everyone with his demands, he personally attacks them repeatedly. Now he’s pouting about the retort Fox News gave to his demands to remove Kelly and complains bitterly about the money they’ll make (which makes him sound like Bernie Sanders crying about capitalism).

I think Trump’s stupid and immature stunt will backfire and Cruz will be the victor. Then the Donald will get his over-due comeuppance.

A wise general never allows his enemies to determine the time and place of future battles. Being under attack from all directions, Trump had everything to lose and nothing to gain from knowingly walking into a hostile environment of desperate second-stringers and career-building narcissistic and petulant moderators. He did the right thing with the “takeaway close.” Now, he’s being excoriated by the very people who claim to be “fair and balanced.” There’s your answer as to why he withdrew. They’re exposing themselves as hypocrites who were attempting to create a media spectacle and political bloodbath.

"Now the ball is in Fox's court ..."

Beg to disagree here.

Trump has lobbed a ball into two courts, neither one of them being Fox News (haters gonna hate, after all).

No, the first court is the other candidates. By showing up and laying down in front of Fox News' determination to show itself to be the Republican kingmaker, all the rest of the field show how venal and compromised they are. The electorate is filled with low information and sheepish voters, I know. But, they're not all that way. When Trump tells Fox to go to hell, he highlights now every other candidate refuses to say "Go to Hell."

The second court Trump aims at is the RNC. Where in Hell are they? Have they ceded to Fox to do their political dirty work? Sure looks like it to me. Again, more in the electorate are savvy to this than they think.

The biggest loser here is likely Cruz. He could show himself to be a genuine class act by walking out of the debate himself. He can show himself as making a kind of common cause with Trump that Cruz supporters would praise, and Trump supporters would as well. How many Cruz supporters have you see around here saying, "Well, I'm not a Trump man, but still ..." That sentiment, coming from the Trump side in response to Cruz's refusal to walk into an ambush would galvanize the voting public against the inbred RNC which goes awhoring with the likes of Fox News.

As a Cruz supporter I have to say that Trump and Megyn have a personal feud that doesn’t make either one of them look any better, as is most often the case with personal feuds.

Tactically speaking, Trump skipping the debate is a win for Cruz. He is by far the best debater, and the more time he gets, the better. And who won’t watch the debate because Trump isn’t there? In the bag Trump supporters and gawking Democrats won’t tune in, no loss for Cruz. Not a single undecided conservative will skip the debate due to Trump’s absence, and they’ll all see Cruz in high form.

Trump doesn’t make many PR mistakes, but I think this was one. I appreciate the desire to avoid ambushes, but every media appearance carries that threat for a Republican. Failing to enter the field, for fear that an ambush awaits makes the ambush unnecessary.

Yes, Fox will likely lose money. I don’t care, I don’t own Fox stock. How that personal feud churns and boils is of no concern to me. Trump creates about one a week, so there is no reason to rubber neck this one.

What does Trump think? If he is running against Hillary in the general election the msm will make Kelley look like a local info babe asking softball questions to the local library board. Will he take his ball and go home then too?

It was more than just the Megyn Kelly situation.

Someone posted in one of the threads yesterday that Bret Baier seemed to indicated on The Five that they [he, Wallace, Kelly, FoxNews] were planning to come after the candidates [i.e., Trump].

FoxNews saw this debate as their last chance to make news by being the media to take Trump down. Thus, they seemed to be loading up for that effort.

It seems to be rather like a WWE match where one side gangs up on one of the competitors.

This thread showed up yesterday:

It is likely the Trump team found out that FoxNews was planning gang warfare.

Today, Ailes and company are in panic mode, as they realize they are about to lose a massive amount in ad revenues -- ad space that was sold based on Trump at the debate. Those advertisers will likely be demanding refunds.

Fox News Moderators have broken and thrown aside the ‘code’ that they never should show bias in the ANY of their media not only debates.

The mask is off and Trump is the one who ripped it off.

Great post. Thanks. My first reaction to hearing that Trump plans to sit out this 'debate' was that he'd made a tactical error and elevated Kelly's status way above where the tart belongs. But upon reflection I think it was a wise move. Why open yourself to two hours of snide attacks and criticism when you don't have to?

Trump just cut the viewership of this side show in half. Many Freepers have suggested that Trump hold a Town Hall at the same time and let CNN cover it. If he did he'd erode their viewership even more.

Rumor has it other candidates are thinking about skipping the debate and doing the Trump event instead. That would be a smart move. Who might do that? Carson, Huck most likely and maybe Christy. That would be a hoot.

The debate could be a win for Cruz. He has the tremendous opportunity to lead and present himself outside of Trump’s presence. There will be a smaller number of viewers, although replays would be available through YouTube, etc.
