WASHINGTON â National Public Radioâs (NPR) ombudsman Elizabeth Jensen released an explanation and apology Monday for a map published on the news organizationâs website that erased Israel from the Middle East.
On January 24, NPRâs blog Goats and Soda, which covers health and culture issues around the world, ran a piece titled, âWhat Are You Afraid Of In 2016? Globetrotters Share Their Fears.â The post focused on travelersâ anxieties for the coming year, and included an illustration of the Middle East and North Africa, the region of the world that travelers most perceive as being at risk.
âThe map portion of the illustration had a number of mistakes,â Jensen wrote. âThe most notable being that Israel was labeled as âPalestine.'â
The pro-Israel website HonestReporting.com was the first to recognize the blunder. Its managing editor, Simon Plosker, wrote on their website, âIt is completely unacceptable for NPR to publish an image that erases Israel from the map. That nobody at NPR recognized just how problematic this image is on multiple levels speaks volumes about the deficiencies in the editorial process.â

The list, Ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
Yeah. Riiiiiight.
NPR apologises for being caught.
Honestly, it was all just a mistake. Map Making is a relatively new ‘science’ and until we get enough adventurous explorers who can verify the boundaries of some of the mysterious ruins of lost civilizations like the Jews which are now buried under the ever growing and expanding NEW PALESTINE, well, updates might have to wait. It’s not like we can just wave a magic wand or our finger and instantly edit a map.
Right.
Excellent comment. To hell with Needless Public Rot.
If your understanding is that mistakes are often made when working under time pressure and you know you are working under time pressure, then it is your responsibility to review your work to ensure mistakes are corrected BEFORE publication. Apologies after the fact are hollow.
I just don’t get this, when you deny reality you are a fool.
Well, this IS NPR, so Progressive idiocy is par for the course.
As far as “at risk” places to go on vacation, I would have to say Israel doesn’t count and “Palestine” does.
Good.
Why are the taxpayers funding this group?
Israel is the only country in the world that has to prove it's right to exist and be accepted by the international community on a daily basis.
Israel is the only country that the UN condemns on a daily basis despite hundreds of ongoing wars and many other “occupations”.
In short, it does not matter what the Jews of Israel do so they should just look after their interests and flip the finger to those nations that knee-jerk reflex condemn...oops, did I leave out Obama’s Samantha Powers? The world OWES Israel tremendous debt for many things she has done. Today, the world is at her doorstep begging her to teach them how to deal with terror. HYPOCRITES ALL!
“That nobody at NPR recognized just how problematic this image is on multiple levels speaks volumes about the deficiencies in the editorial process.”
It wasn’t a deficiency, it was on purpose - they just got caught, and they regret that.
better to apologize than to ask permission
NPR was just premature.
Nobama put the release date of Jan. 19, 2017. when he issued the revised map.
I find your statements most ironic. Years ago maps of the National Geographic Society were considered the ultimate authority. Today maps of historic authority are considered but suggestions and the National Geographic today is just a suggestion of accurate history. I loved that magazine once, but what I loved is gone.
We apologize because we are so freaking stupid.
