Critics blast Massachusetts city's new 'essay' rule for gun-carry applicants

Critics are blasting a Massachusetts city's new law that they claim requires residents applying for a license to carry handguns to write "an essay" and pay upwards of $1,100 for training.

The new laws take effect this week in Lowell, a city of 110,000 that lies 35 miles north of Boston. Pushed by Police Superintendent William Taylor and passed by the City Council, they require applicants for unrestricted handgun licenses to state in writing why they should receive such a license. Taylor, who was unavailable for comment on Monday, has sole discretion for approving or denying the applications.

"It is absurd that people should have to write an essay to the town to explain why they should be able to exercise their constitutional rights," said Jim Wallace, executive director of Gun Owners Action League of Massachusetts. "We already have a very strict set of gun laws in the state, but this is way over the top."

Literacy tests are unconstitutional infringements on the right to vote. A government imposing a literacy test , application or license requirement, or anything else is an unconstitutional infringement on the right to keep and bear arms.

The militia is all able bodied men up to 45 years old.

The state governments are derelict in their duty to get their militia forces ready for action.

Dear City Council,

I was going to make my own gun, but that would require me to go out in the woods with an axe, find a tree and chop, chop, chop, chop, chop, chop, chop, chop, chop, chop, chop, chop, chop, chop, ... (18 pages later) .... so I decided instead to buy one.

the requirements to have a gun should be the same as the requirements to vote.

no id.
no tests.
no registrations.
no tracking.

if it’s good enough to shape the political power of the country, shouldn’t it be enough for personal security?

Interesting perspective argument. Very original...I have never seen anyone present this!

There’s not much damage you can do if you pull out your vote in a crowded theater and start aiming it at people though.

This certainly sounds like a GREAT 2nd Amendment case for the courts. This is just SICKENING.

The essay must be similar to Jersey’s requirement that you “prove a need” to have a carry permit. The proof is never enough except for the “connected”.

Firearms and gun saftey classes should be taught in junior and senior high schools. When I went to high school in Washington, DC, my high school had a gun range and rifle team.

Please VOTE in the Free Republic Caucus 01/25/2016.

Thank you.

Remember:

Don't forget:

Don't post ANYTHING other than a vote on that thread
.  If you do, you will invalidate your vote for today.

ABIDE BY THE PROPER FORMAT.  You will jeopardize your vote if you don't.

Then all those who come out for the Presidential election only should write an essay before beiong allowed to vote or at least have to answer some questions before being allowed to vote.

Oh, c'mon; it's Massachusetts! Lets have a similar law requiring an essay and $1200 permit before obtaining the services of an abortionist.

tell that to your grandkids or the people who lose 50% of what they earn, every week.

one's just quicker.
