After he left Wall Street to enter politics eight years ago, Representative Jim Himes, Democrat of Connecticut, began fielding the occasional question of when he intended to run for president.
"It has come up in jest any number of times," said Mr. Himes, who always has his answer ready. "There could be constitutional questions."
Mr. Himes, you see, was born in Peru in 1966 while his father worked for the Ford Foundation. That makes him one of at least 17 current members of Congress who, because of their birth outside the United States, could run afoul of the Constitution's "natural born citizen" presidential requirement should they try to relocate down Pennsylvania Avenue.
...
But a resolution is no easy task.
A constitutional amendment could be the most certain route.

Wrinkled Gray lady? no, she is a whore.
honestly, I am one of the original “birthers” and reposted EVERYTHING to help keep the issue alive in the first 4 years of bozo’s corrupt hi-jack greatest in history con job of our great republic.
The left went along willingly. Now, I am pissed and want pay back. Cruz is a full blown America loving conservative along with his father and whole family. I actually wish there were more questions about his eligibility just to rub it in the left’s and the establishments face.
The real birthers... those who supported Obama... are disgusting pigs.
WIN CRUZ!!!
Given their recent track record what makes you think their decision will have anything to do with the constitution? Constitutionally Congress is the co-equal branch of government charged with certifying a president. If they, knowing all the facts about the elected decide to certify him then he has met the NBC requirement. I think States have the right to determine who can appear on a Ballot but I don't know of any that have an NBC requirement, or that would bother to verify it for the purposes of putting a candidate on the ballot.
Now Democrats would round Freepers up in boxcars if they had the power. They do not give up willingly so I can foresee a scenario of a Rat controlled state trying to keep Cruz off the ballot. I can also see a rat controlled congress refusing to certify him as president should he win the election. Neither of those possibilities will dissuade me from voting for Cruz because I think he is the best candidate.
to the above and whoeverelsecares;
sigh... ok, start a petition for Free Republic to come up with a simple way of letting people know when an article has already been posted.
I get so SICK of people crying about an article already being posted when for 10 years it has been an issue. Either deal with it or complain to management. Leave people who are trying to contribute, alone.
btw, easy fix for FR, check through a simple ajax get if the link or title is already posted, and save people the trouble of going through all the fields to post something for the community only to get blasted by people that have nothing better to do. geesh, the Internet is now 10 years more mature than when this site (I have dearly loved) was coded.
The checking isn’t difficult. I have been doing AJAX, JQuery and now AnugularJS for years. (AngularJS only 2 years). I would do the coding for a greatly discounted rate just to modernize FR a little. I don’t like duplicate posts, either, but I hate the attacks on people that have taken their time to share an article (yes, I have been attacked).
Let’s modernize... at least a little.
/rant off. I hope I don’t get banned after over 15 years.
What’s a constitution?
I understand you wanting you to vote for Cruz as the best possible conservative candidate, the issue is, is he the best possible legal candidate.
The meaning is plain. Maybe it’s time to shut up with the nonsense.
You trust the same Supreme Court that found a constitutional right to homosexual marriage, to give a final, and sound judgment on the meaning of "natural born citizen"?
Shirley, you jest.
The Framers defined the phrase - just not in the Constitution. You have to read their contemporary writings and letters of the day, to discover that.
it’s called “search” “titles” in the upper right corner of the main page.
Riiiight, because the NYT was too busy in 2008 when B.O. was campaigning
What if you came out of a test tube? On the Island of Manhattan. In the year 2525. If man is still alive. If woman can survive. Until then? And... you came out of a test tube on the Island of Manhattan in a Sharia Law Enclave established by Hillary Clinton after nutjob fringe elements in the Republican Party got some idiots to sit home fretting New York Values and let her win?
Would you still be a natural born? Or? What happens when test tube babies are cooked up in a Obamacare hospital to increase the Democratic Party base via science as well as immigration? Are they natural born, albeit mass produced and handed a form to register as Democrat with a thumb print?
Natural born?
What if you are allowed to marry your dog? And science has advanced to the point where you can have a hybrid, with the dog? For example, the Democrats say that if it is love, it is ok. Can the hybrid run for President?
We should start preparing for such future events now. Because, it is going to happen.
I don’t have any authority, but I will give you my opinion.
Natural Born Citizen = person born of mother and father who are both citizens of the United States of America at the time of said persons birth.
Said person MUST be born on the legal soil of any State of United States.
Persons born in Consulates, Territories, Protectorates, or other lands or ships under control of the United States shall be considered citizens, but NOT NATURAL BORN CITIZENS.
Being out of the country is no longer an excuse to any parent for not having their child born on American soil.
With modern transportation any person can be anywhere in the world in 24 hours or less.
You both do understand my point, right?
Have either of you posted an article? It takes a little effort and many times you get the dreaded “links from blah blah are not welcomed” or site only allows excerpts or site doesn’t allow Free Republic to post message. Why not tell us right away before we even complete all the fields?
Why not do a quick query to see if the link or title hasn’t been posted. It is simple technology with the modern web.
Honestly, I don’t visit as much or post like I used to. I don’t know all the reasons. Maybe, disgust at Obama and the direction of the country or maybe a little with the antiquity of what I view as the greatest political site of all time.
I also don’t enjoy the over the top cynicism and lack of humor that FR has trended toward. Maybe, everyone is just annoyed and grumpy with the course of the nation and just taking it out on each other. It is too a little too much like the bashing from the comment sections under articles and Facebook, or maybe, I am just getting too old for it.
It seems like freepers used to be more willing to help out each other instead of attacking bloggers and duplicate posters and whatever else is the pet peeve.
I am not opusing. I will always check in and reply.
Yes, I have posted a few treads. Before I do, I always check so as to avoid creating a duplicate. The search function works well if used correctly.
The nastiness on FR comes and goes. It's always higher during election time. At least so far this cycle the owner hasn't started banning. Yet.
