Just How Close Was The 2014 Amnesty Vote? – Here’s The Back Story…
The Conservative Treehouse and PBS ^ | Dec. 15, 2015 | Sundance

-snip-

A very insightful PBS documentary "The Immigration Battle" lays out exactly what took place during the 2013/2014 legislative time frame (i.e., Gang of 8). If you have not watched the documentary I would strongly recommend you do so, it is profoundly enlightening.

The documentary walks you through a timeline explaining exactly who was doing what at the times discussed.

- snip -

They had enough votes to pass it.

- snip -

On Tuesday June 10th Speaker Boehner, Eric Cantor (Majority Leader) and Kevin McCarthy (Majority Whip) had lunch together discussing timing the vote Thursday night or Friday Morning.

However, later that same night...Dave Brat defeated (primaried) Eric Cantor.

-snip-

The next day, Wednesday June 11th, the House of Representatives was also in a state of shock - Almost the entire reason for the defeat was the controversial immigration position of Cantor.

Immediately panicked GOP congresscritters were calling Kevin McCarthy and revoking their previous (2 days earlier) positions of support for the bill. By lunchtime Wednesday June 11th it was obvious the Immigration Bill was NOW DEAD in the House.

It was his poison pill that gave the pro amnesty vote cover to vote against it. That is what a poison pill amendment does.

The Gang-of-Eight bill passed the Senate 68-32 on June 27, 2013. It is my understanding that every amendment offered was defeated. What Ted Cruz is doing is claiming that some of his offered, but defeated amendments, were intended to be poison pills.

Either I'm confused, or some of his followers are confused on this thread. So, please tell us what Cruz "poison pill" amendments were passed and attached to the Gang-of-Eight bill.

I don't and since he hasn't officially announced yet, only filed with FEC, I hope he doesn't run. Now we've got other Districts to work on.

I do too and worked on his primary effort. It truly rocked the House, GoPe, and the political elite.

They forced the amnesty anyway via Boehner funding Obama’s executive orders.
Ryan reaffirmed everything too, and added to it.

I hear you...I just think it’s hopeless to try to defeat Brat, he’s too much of a LEGEND at this point...and he’s still doing a GREAT JOB. They’ll be wasting their money.

We have been fending it off for a long time.

2001 it was about to be passed, but the 9-11 attacks happened. It was delayed until the next year. It was stopped on a technicality by Dem. Senator Robert Byrd.

GW Bush tried to push it through 3 more times after his 2004 election. It was stopped twice in the Senate and once in the House.

I believe Jeff Sessions and he stands by what Cruz says.

That lie about Cruz supporting amnesty is thrown around everywhere here at FR. I guess they think if you say a lie enough it becomes the truth.

They were all were amendments designed so to expose the original intent of the bill as being primarily an amnesty/citizenship bill moreso than a comprehensive immigration bill. By the denial of the Cruz etal amendments the Gang of Eight were exposed naked as to their original intent, hence leading to it’s defeat.

If you want exact specifics you will have to look it up yourself, I do not have the knowledge to figure it out. I do not have underlings to do it like Trump has.

The only thing Sessions accomplished was the tarnishing his own reputation.

Don’t tell me about your poison pill and then have to explain two years later why you’re still pushing it.

It was Ted’s goal all along. Whether a good thing or not, don’t cast it as one thing and then tell me I’m the problem when I observe that wasn’t the case.

Trump may in fact be supporting it too. I don’t know. He didn’t shade it one way and then wind up with egg on his face when that became obviously a non-truth.

They will pull out every trick in the book to stop Dave. Most of the money will come from outside the Commonwealth i.e., US Chamber of Commerce.

Without the maneuvering by Cru the bill would have been passed weeks earlier and the Cantor loss wouldn’t have been a factor.

Thanks for the Ping! That WAS a momentous event. And I’m convinced that everything that happened at the end of 2014 (the CRomnibus) and all of 2015 was payback to conservatives, bitter, bitter revenge.

We will not be forgiven for throwing that big wrench into their carefully laid plans.

We exposed their scheme to pass Amnesty after all their candidates were safely through their primaries. We took out a big fish, their speaker-to-be, their golden boy, who has endorsed Jeb! by the way!

If we voters of 7th VA had not taken out the weasel Eric Cantor they would have passed Rubio’s amnesty bill.

The Republic still has a fighting chance if we reverse the illegal alien inundation.

Many more districts need to Cantorize their weasels.

The billed passed the Senate by the huge margin of 68-32. Precisely how did anything Cruz did lead to the bills defeat?

Lol, what a load of nonsense. That bill sat in the House for a full year and it didn't pass because the House has always been the tougher place to pass amnesty legislation. It was, just as in 2006 and 2007, the uprising of the voters who defeated that bill.

And the final nail in the coffin was the defeat of Cantor.

No, we remember what was going on at the time because Cruz told us what he was doing and why he was doing it. He kept saying that it was going to work because he was exposing the true intent of the bill.

Defeat in the house was insured after the poiison pill exposed the intent of the senate gang of 8 to be not what schumer and rubio were claiming.

You trumpers should not be bitching about this because if it had passed the house the democrats would have 20 million new voters.

“No, we remember what was going on at the time because Cruz told us what he was doing and why he was doing it. “

I heard him talk about ‘poison pill two years later. Could you provide a link please?

When Duncan Hunter presented a ‘poison pill’ amendment to force a vote he let it be known and never tried to defend it as his policy like Cruz did in several interviews.
