NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Rep. Peter King is calling out presidential candidate Ted Cruz amid controversy over the senator's comments on "New York values."

On Saturday, King tweeted that Ted Cruz was lying when he said he supports New York's firefighters and police.

"Not true," the Republican said, adding that Cruz did not co-sponsor or vote in favor of the Zadroga 9/11 Health & Compensation Act. King went on to call Cruz "a fraud."

@tedcruz can't tell truth. Says he fights 4 cops & firefighters. Not true. Didn't cosponsor or vote 4 Zadroga 9/11 health bill. What a fraud

- Rep. Pete King (@RepPeteKing) January 16, 2016

Cruz has come under heavy fire from both sides of the aisle in New York after making repeated comments attacking "New York values" during Thursday night's Republican presidential debate.

Lefty King is always for government handouts, whether the cause is good or bad. He needs to read Davy Crocket’s cogent thoughts on government charity...which is of course, taken from others, not given out of their own pockets.

I understand that some of you are more on the side of the terrorists then the American citizen but this is the most shameful I have ever seen.

Nice try drama queen. There has been plenty of $$$ allocated, beyond their existing benefits, in the decade before the vote in question.

What else was in the bill? When is enough, enough?

No thanks to spoiled brat Cruz. He is the worst. Thank God people are waking up. I am proud of myself that I saw him the fraud he is years ago. There is something about him that screams FAKE. And you are going to be so depressed when more comes out on him. It is going to be legendary. Just wait.

Well, DU has some pretty sick and twisted freaks. So I wouldn’t make that comparison. And while I believe that primary season at FR is for big boys only, I must admit that the rhetoric this season has gotten awfully personal and awfully hateful. JM2C

“Cruz should vote for it because the firefighters and police who spent days and days protecting people in the two towers and cleaning up the death and mess that was result of terrorism.”

Evidence? The bill was named after a man whom the coroner says did NOT die from 9/11 dust, but “a consequence of injecting prescription drugs”.

Spending money and doing something effective are two different things, or at least, conservatives USED to believe that. Particularly when the folks who control the spending are liberal democrats in NYC. Only a fool would write a 4 BILLION dollar blank check to NYC politicians!

It was heartwarming to see Hillary, Cuomo and DeBlasio join in on Trump’s side over that NYC values thing.

I was wondering how long it would take for Trump to make his supporters here wish they had not been posting the last year.

So, let’s update the list. In order to support Trump, I have to reject:

Rush, Levin, Sowell, et al.

I have to now accept as allies:

Pelosi, Reid, various writers at Salon & Slate (who attack Cruz and Rubio), and now Peter King.

So, really, we’re no longer fighting for conservatism? We’re willing to give up our principles and the allies that have stood by us for decades in order to ... what? Win? What do we “win” if the result isn’t conservatism?

This sounds more like Democrats than anything else. Power for powers sake, and not to advance our principles. That’s the definition of what’s already wrong in this nation...
