While Donald Trump cynically maintains that he has no clue what Ted Cruz's phrase "New York values" means -- and while he scurrilously implies that Cruz has some sort of malicious, nasty feeling about New Yorkers over 9/11 -- video has now emerged of a nationally televised 1999 interview in which Trump seems completely familiar with the "New York values" to which Cruz referred.
Trump appeared on Meet The Press on October 24, 1999, where he had several exchanges with Tim Russert:
RUSSERT: Do you think gays should be allowed to be married?
TRUMP: It's something I haven't given lots of thought to. I live in New York City, there is a tremendous movement on to have and allow gay marriage. It's just something that is too premature for me to comment on.
RUSSERT: How about gays serving in the military?
TRUMP: It would not disturb me. I mean, hey, I lived in New York City and Manhattan all my life, so my views are a little bit different than if I lived in Iowa, perhaps --
Then there was this exchange:
RUSSERT: Partial birth abortion. Eliminating of abortion in the third trimester. Big issue in Washington. Would President Trump ban partial birth abortion?
TRUMP: Well, look, I'm very pro-choiceâ¦and again, it may be a little bit of a New York background, because there is some different attitude in different parts of the country, and you know, I was raised in New York, and grew up and work and everything else in New York City.
RUSSERT: But you would not ban it.
TRUMP: No ... I am pro-choice in every respect as far as it goes, but I just hate it.
Here is Cruz's description of "New York values" from last night: "everyone understands that the values in New York City are socially liberal or pro-abortion or pro- gay-marriage, focus around money and the media."
Good job.
This will get swept away and unnoticed. The narrative has been set.
So values are based on geography?
Nice DIVISIVE way to ‘unite’
More Christian support for Cruz I see.
Nice going.
It was a statement about Donald, which in the video he admits to have those values.
So I guess Trump saying Iowans are stupid was uniting?
Just last year the RNC said they want better outreach to blacks and hispanics.
The RNC should be happy Trump is bringing back the Reagan Democrats, by focusing on bringing jobs back.
The RNC should be reading the polls that show Trump doing way better with minorities who vote 95% of the time with the Dems saying to pollsters they plan to and are motivated to vote for Trump. Art Laffer says if this is so Trump could win 45 states.
Anyone posting this Anti Trump BS want another loser like Dole, Romney or McCain.
We want America to be great again, we want a Lion not a pipsqueek leading us, we have the TURDLE capitulating to Obama and running up huge deficits that will kill our country.
So what if Trump interrupts the Cheap Labor Express?
They don’t care about shipping jobs overseas, deficits, and unemployed Americans.
I hate all these Anti Trump BS stories. The man wants to clean up the mess the Republicans made by not keeping their promises to us in the base. They should all be fired.
Trump tried to connect Cruz’s accusation (that Trump is not a true conservative) with 9-11. That was a very sentimental tactic but it had nothing to do with the fact that Trump can’t be counted as a true conservative. Cruz can.
Trump supporters who call themselves true conservative need to pause and take account of Trump’s record.
I like Trump and I like what he has done in this race but he is not the best candidate. Cruz is.
This election, we just want someone to win who will not open the borders and one who will torment the elites.
Cruz in the better man for us; but, Trump can get the non-Republican votes it will take.
So vote Trump and pray for revival and keep Cruz for the next time.
I liked Trump in the same sense I liked Giulliani. The liberal social values are why I cannot support either. Trump also shows signs of someone who will do anything and say anything for the prize he is after. I don’t trust him. I didn’t think that way of Rudy.
I agree that anyone posting quotes from Trump is posting BS.
Seems like a lot of Pro-Cruz people want a combo President/ Priest kinda guy. That’s a big mistake in a lot of ways.
Mainly because that stance has no chance of winning the office of POTUS.
Didn’t the Bible (St. Paul?) say to be all things to all men?
You can’t succeed running as Moses or Elijah.
And this election it is imperative to WIN.
Trump can win this election.
Your chart shows that evil polls well and is popular!
Sorry - his NYC values are a no go for most of the country. A Trump nomination means a democrat president.
Trump voters do like the anger and the twitter “gotcha” jabs. Bottom line is that Trump would do his best to get the financial house in order, if even possible. Beyond that, it’s just self delusion. He’s a NE liberal.
If you want an all around great conservative, Cruz is your man. He’s not perfect, but who is?
