Trump hits back at Cruz: Anyone who wants to knock “New York values” needs to go through me

Second look at Trump?

Donald Trump reacted to criticism from Republican presidential primary challenger Cruz Wednesday, saying that he equates "New York values" to "energy" that helped the city to persevere after the September 11th attacks.

"One thing it means is energy. You know, when the World Trade Center got hit, we rebuilt that World Trade Center and we got through and very few places in this world could have gotten through what we went through. I mean, I was so proud of New York, the World Trade Center, these two massive, 110 story buildings come down, thousands of people killed. I've never seen anything like it in my life. And immediately the rebuilding started," Trump told conservative Radio host Howie Carr.

In a separate interview Wednesday on Bloomberg News' "All Due Respect," Trump further addressed the attack, saying, "When you knock New York, you've got to go through me. New York is an amazing place with amazing people." The more I think about Cruz's "New York values" attack on Trump this week, the more I think it's a silly mistake (and not just because I'm biased due to my upbringing). Here's one reason why:

You can understand why Cruz did it. When you're making a play for Iowa and the deep south in a Republican primary, you can't go wrong needling the godless sodomites of NYC. Problem is, the race won't be won or lost in Iowa and the deep south. Ironically, it's the blue states that may decide the nominee because they come later in this year's primary schedule, which means they can follow winner-take-all rules for awarding their delegates instead of awarding them proportionally. Even if Cruz wins Iowa and cleans up in the SEC states, he's likely to lead fairly narrowly over the rest of the...

Distortions and outright lies.

Cruz is a good, decent man. There's no freakin way he was putting down 9-11 rescuers, and Trump knows it-Ugly and dirty campaigning here, but I guess this is what we've come to.

I HATE all this- HATE it.

Trump and Cruz fighting each other helps the dems and GOPe.

I will keep praying for my nation.

Yeah...... New York values like making a nude model your 3rd wife.

Or like living in a penthouse and having a chauffeur drive you everywhere you go. I'm certain most Iowans can relate to that.

If it comes to Hillary vs Trump, I’ll vote Trump in a heartbeat. I strongly prefer Cruz’s positions, but I’m not sure he has the leadership skills or fight to win. I liked - with a big D - several of the governors in the race best, but they couldn’t top 1% in the polls. I’m inclined to think we’re gonna get screwed no matter what.

Ok, then lets investigate.

Its no investigation; its old news and well documented, knock your socks off.

http://www.politifact.com/punditfact/statements/2015/jul/09/ben-ferguson/donald-trumps-campaign-contributions-democrats-and/

We went to two authoritative databases of campaign finance data to examine Ferguson's numbers: OpenSecrets.org, to find federal donations, and FollowtheMoney.org, for state-level donations.

Trump has actually been relatively evenhanded in doling out cash to the two parties, but since 1989, he's contributed over $350,000 more to Republicans running for federal and state offices, campaign finance records show.

Data from the Federal Election Commission and state elections offices provided by the two websites show that Trump has given $584,850 to Democrats and $961,140 to the GOP over the last 26 years.

The difference in donations is almost entirely captured in Trump's recent giving. Since 2012, Trump has donated $463,450 to Republicans and just $3,500 to Democrats (California Attorney General Kamala Harris and New York Assemblyman Michael Benedetto).

We've included those numbers below, with links to records of the individual contributions. Federal Republicans $703,900 Democrats $327,600 State Republicans $257,240 Democrats $257,250 Total Republicans $961,140 Democrats $584,850 1989-2011 Republicans $497,690 Democrats $581,350 2012-on Republicans $463,450 Democrats $3,500

In short, Ferguson's claim might have been true had he uttered it just a few years ago. In 2011, a Washington Post analysis of Trump's donations found the majority of them going to Democrats. But the flow of cash from Trump to Democrats has fallen off; the last time he gave to a Democrat running for federal office was in 2010.

We can't drill down into local and city politics because there is no single campaign finance database. But we should note that Trump donated $50,000 to Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel in 2010, as well as over $25,000 more to other Cook County Democrats, among other donations that he's made on the local level. (Trump has made his presence known in the Windy City.)

At the same time, however, the real estate mogul's gifts to Republican candidates and organizations increased dramatically. Since 2010, Trump has donated $124,000 to the National Republican Senatorial Committee and given another $50,000 to American Crossroads, a conservative super PAC.

A mix of politics and business It's important to note that just as Trump's political ambitions and private business interests often seem to overlap, it's sometimes difficult to parse out the exact motivations behind many of his political contributions over the years.

As an influential real estate developer in the Northeast and in cities around the world, Trump's contributions may have not have much to do with one's political party.

From 1996 to 2007, for instance, Trump made 12 separate donations to New Jersey Rep. Frank LoBiondo, a Republican who represents the Garden State's Second Congressional District. The district includes Atlantic City, where the Trump Organization used to have significant holdings.

While conservatives like Ferguson have criticized Trump for his donations to Democrats, Trump defended himself as having no viable Republican options in overwhelmingly blue states like New York. "Everyone's Democratic," he told Sean Hannity in 2011. "So what am I going to do - contribute to Republicans? One thing: I'm not stupid. Am I going to contribute to Republicans for my whole life when they get heat when they run against some Democrat and the most they can get is 1 percent of the vote?"

Our rating

Ferguson said that Trump has "given more money to Democratic candidates than Republican candidates."

We can't say definitively that his claim is wrong at all levels of government, since we don't have the local data. But public records show that the real estate tycoon has actually contributed around $350,000 more to Republicans at the state and federal level than Democrats. That, however, is a recent development.

Ferguson's statement contains an element of truth but ignores critical facts. We rate it Mostly False.

Trump wears big pants. He leads and all follow in baby steps. Cruz loses on this. Slamming New York values. Woo wee Cruz just stepped into a big pile of it!

Yep. Since Cruz wants to paint with broad brushes I’m sure he won’t mind being identified with Goldman Sachs values.

Because all of our political class are so much more like “the real people in Iowa”. They are all millionaires, before they run or in a few years. What’s that all about hmmm? Trump certainly will not be vulnerable to bribes and money favors. Goldman Sachs anyone?

If Trump weren’t so rich he could not be making the difference in the political landscape that he does. He is not afraid of the bullets that will fly when he is not politically correct because he has the muscle that comes form $$$. Whether he is elected or not he has the whole election about the things that matter to American’s from all walks of life and were not being addressed by anyone before he spoke out. He has done America a real favor.

You are not standing for anything. You are just snarking. No political candidate owns me and I wouldn’t utter a thing I thought to be untrue or unfair to attack anyone. You on the other hand are flailing. I have done my homework on Trump and on Cruz as well. Both have their strengths and their weaknesses, areas I agree with their positions and areas where I don’t. I think Trump can take the heat and has the muscle to pull off this election.
We have Christie in NJ. I don’t really like him but he’s the best we can do. At least some of his positions are more conservative than the average NJ poll. He is the best we could get elected with the weighting of the inner cities and unions.
Similarly Trump has some positions that are too liberal or big Government for me but those positions allow him to get the crossover votes he will need to get elected. A more conservative candidate would alienate people that will vote for Trump. I am thrilled to see him getting blue collar, Hispanic and black support. I believe that a more conservative government would benefit all those people as well as the Nation. I think he may be the spoonful of sugar and the fist in a velvet glove that gets America back on track.

Didn't read it and don't care to.

You're supporting a liberal in this conservative forum. Long-winded rants from people like you are of no interest to me.

Also it would be good to stop posting lies as slurs.

http://www.politifact.com/florida/statements/2015/aug/24/jeb-bush/bush-says-trump-was-democrat-longer-republican-las/
Trump’s Party affiliation from Voting Records

July 1987 Republican
October 1999 Independence Party
August 2001 Democrat
September 2009Republican
December 2011 No party affiliation (independent)
April 2012 Republican

We don’t need to go back as far as 1987 for this check, of course, but it shows Trump has switched quite a bit. After 12 years as a Republican, he registered with the Independence Party in 1999. That moved Trump to New York’s version of the Reform Party, which is neither Democratic nor Republican. He even won the Reform Party’s California primary for president in March 2000, despite withdrawing from that contest.

Bush’s campaign told us that “the last decade” meant when Trump was registered from 2000 to 2010. Trump was registered as a Democrat for 8 years, 1 month in that time span.

But we think a reasonable person could mistake “the last decade” to mean the last 10 years. When we added up the years since 2005, we found Trump has been registered as a Democrat for 3 years, 9 months, and registered as Republican for 5 years, 6 months (and counting).

Media reports said Trump’s switch in December 2011, where he checked “I do not wish to enroll in a party,” made him an independent voter before the 2012 presidential election, in which he considered running himself. His attorney Michael Cohen told Politico that Trump made the change “in order to preserve his right to run as an independent if he is (not pleased) with the GOP nominee.”

Trump decided not to run that year. He switched back to Republican in April 2012.

...NY and the East Coast don't deserve your snide remarks... So take your prejudices on a long walk down a short pier.

Haaa!   Not many people in Denver or Des Moines can tell someone to walk off the end of a pier!   That definitely sounds like a New York insult.

I love your spirit, man.   New Yorkers are some of the best people.

I live in the Poconos, 2 hours from the big city, and we're really a bedroom community of NYC.   Lots of people take buses from my town into the city every morning.   My neighbor across the street was raised in the city and one time he got a contract to single-handedly repaint Yankee Stadium.

I always tell people that the Poconos are beautiful with nature all around us.   In fact, one of great things about living here is the wildlife — Yankee fans :- )

The Poconos are beautiful. I’m glad to live close to them, camped there as a kid. There is a lot to love about this part of the world especially the people.
