".....[Donald Trump's] detractors will no doubt see his China-bashing as another example of Trumpian buffoonery. Most students of U.S.-China trade will tell you that both countries benefit from the flow of goods and services across the Pacific, and that although China is guilty of imposing nontariff barriers, subsidizing its exporters in violation of global trade rules, and failing to respect the intellectual property rights of U.S. entities, the pros for American investors, workers, and consumers massively outweigh the cons. There is a problem with that view, however....

......Of all the wackadoo ironies of Trump's emergence as tribune of America's white working class, the strangest of all is that as a billionaire real estate developer, Trump made his fortune in the most corrupt, coddled, and cronyist sector in the modern American economy. One of the reasons the consequences of deindustrialization were ignored by policymakers for so long is that they were masked by the housing boom. Rising home prices stimulated development and home renovation, which in turn generated employment for at least some men with high school or lower education-a disproportionately large share of whom were young immigrants and second-generation Americans living in the Sun Belt, not middle-aged whites languishing in the Rust Belt.
I have no idea if Donald Trump is going to win the Iowa caucuses or the New Hampshire primary or if he'll go on to the win the Republican presidential nomination. What I do know is that when Trump bashes China, he is speaking to the anguish of millions of Americans who've long felt ignored. The failure of other Republicans to recognize that same anguish, and to do something meaningful about it, is a moral stain on the GOP.

Millions of Americans have slipped from a state of employment into a state of relying on entitlements.
In his systematic drive to diminish the nation and promote socialism, Obama has kept his foot firmly on the neck of the economy and hiring, worked to weaken our national security, as well as deliberately crippled our international standing and influence.
And of course many entrepreneurs donated to Democrats and sang their praises - eagerly going along to get along and improve their bottom line.
good post. And I agree.
the housing market did mask at least partly a devastated manufacturing loss.
We need jobs!!! We need to accept that not Everyone is meant for college! some people in my family shock me with their desire for free college for all. They are conservative in almost every respect but that Idea is insane.
Put learning trades back in high school.
make America’s tax system business friendly. cut the h1b garbage and illegal immigration.
There ARE NO jobs Americans wont do. My nieces and nephews worked HARD jobs in their teens, just like we did.
I almost passed out in the back of McDonalds a dozen times, lol, it was so hot. And no one would let me in the car because of the dirt on my uniform so I took the bus.
If it comes to it, FORCE welfare recipients to do the jobs that “no one wants”
Well, if Slate thinks “free trade” with the Chicoms is so wonderful, it must be great!
bttt!

STOP RIGHT THERE!!!!!!! MASSIVELY outweigh the cons? Give me a friggin 4 in the AM break. This article goes right into the garbage disposal right out of the gate.
Folks, don’t waste your energy reading another example of Anti-Trump Mental Masturbation @ before the sun comes up. Read this instead for clarity, fair and balanced summary of what is going on in our country, our homes, on this forum and the world. NOT THIS RUBBISH.

I suggest FReepers read this for themselves and not short-change themselves by relying on your selected edit.
Capital cronyism’s star.. Donald Trump. How long before the Freepers’who signed up in August 2014, or later.. Jump to trumps defense? Some of them, i have noticed, post a plethora of scoop articles... Almost like they are.. Paid drones. Just like the Obama drones of 2008.. Same tactic, same end result, same party.
“...on your selected EXCERPT.”
But if Trump wins the nomination, he gets my vote!
I scorn all who would differ.
There’s a direct correlation to the deindustrialization of America and Nixon opening up China to the West. Added to that you have advancements in robotics and automation and a over-priced labor market and we have the disaster we have today.
The only demographic in America to see their life expectancy and quality of life lower in this day and age are white working class men.
This demographic is angry, very, very, angry and Trump has tapped into it very effectively. Now the biggest question in politics is this; Will this disenfranchised, and angry demographic turn up and vote, or even more daunting, turn up and caucus? If Trump can turn them out, he could not only win the primary, but also the general.
Welcome to FR.
Will you be eligible to vote in one of the early state primaries?
It’s been suggested (polled) that 20% of Democrats are behind a Trump win.
Is this your understanding?
Have you heard anything from Trump about shrinking the size of government?
Yes registered Republican, but I’m a New Yorker so no.
From what I understand a lot of that “20%” of registered Dems who support Trump are old school Dems who never switched party registry, but have been voting Republican since Reagan. So in essence they are DINOs who never bothered switch party ID, and traditionally don’t vote in primaries.
The other part of that “20%” is made up of young white men and blacks. Both groups voted for Obama in 2008 and 2012 and feel duped and ripped off.
And thank you. I’ve actually been lurking FR since 2006 but never had the urge to post until this election cycle.
What are Hillary's plans for government? What are Bernie's plans?
It is best to elect a conservative. But it is imperative not to lose!
Losing being defined as anybody with a D after their name winning!
You may think this or that candidate is purer, but you lose if the D wins. And if you voted third party or stayed at home, you voted for the D!!
Holy crap! Phyllis is 91‽
And sounds like she knows as much as she always did.
Long may she live!
I first heard of her during the Goldwater days, when I was a high schooler.
Later, she went to the same law school as my liberal trial lawyer brother, namely, Washington University. Over the years, this was a point of conversation between us.
