DISTURBING fact about government workers shows Trump was right on this point all along…
Allen West ^ | 1/9/2016 | The Analytical Economist

It's a good thing Trump wants to rebuild our manufacturing base, because it truly has taken a hit. We've turned from a nation of builders to burger flippers.

To put in perspective just how bad things have gotten - there were more Americans employed in manufacturing in the months leading up to Pearl Harbor than there are today, despite the fact that the population then was a fraction of what it is today.

In that time, there was 1 person employed in manufacturing for every 10.6 people in the overall population compared to 1 person employed in government for every 26.1 people in the overall population.

Oh how things have changed. As CNS News reported:

Those employed by government in the United States in August of this year outnumbered those employed in the manufacturing sector by almost 1.8 to 1, according to data published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

There were 21,995,000 employed by federal, state and local government in the United States in August, according to BLS. By contrast, there were only 12,329,000 employed in the manufacturing sector.

The 2015 Federal budget spends an unprecedented $3.7 trillion which leaves us with a deficit of over half a trillion dollars.

Trump's plan to restore the manufacturing base consists of placing tariffs on Chinese goods and reducing our relatively high corporate tax rate which incentivizes businesses to set up overseas.

There's a huge opportunity to kill two birds with one stone here. Shrink the government, and when people ask where those former government employees are going to work we'll have some nice manufacturing jobs waiting for them.

You’re forgetting that farmers produced off shoot jobs in various industries; canning, shipping (railroads, canal etc) , barrel making, clothing, leather goods....too many to mention....

They weren't producing all those jobs in the time period I described. Canneries and railroads didn't even exist back then. And if farmers were 95% of the work force, then any of those other jobs couldn't have been more than the remaining 5% at most.

There are many more who get their incomes from the government. Add contractors, etc.

"...nearly 40 million Americans employed in some way by government."

And that probably does not include pensioners.

Have a look at where the so-conservative state and local government folks put their money in politics.

American manufacturing is big—American-”based” manufacturing on foreign soil, that is! Don’t let the freedom betrayers fool you with talk about manufacturing indexes.

Basically correct. The flip side is that manufacturing workers also create work for other manufacturing workers because, as you move closer to the the top of the manufacturing food chain, the need for more and more sophisticated parts grow, creating demand further downstream for parts. IOW, a growing manufacturing base grows the economy just as a growing government sector parasitically shrinks the economy.

There’s one hell of a difference between a “government worker” who’s willing to risk his life for my freedom and one who sits behind a desk twiddling their thumbs.

“Half of the government jobs could be outsourced to private contractors. You pay them they pay their emplyees you don’t have to pay vacation, sick pay, insurance or pensions. And they will do the job efficiently.”

Nope. If you want to win a gov contract your company has to be unionized, fully insured, OSHA signs properly displayed, etc etc.

It doesn’t save that much money at all.

But they do count it as an increase in “private sector jobs” on the monthly employment report.

” IOW, a growing manufacturing base grows the economy just as a growing government sector parasitically shrinks the economy.”

Yes, thank you.

Until “public servants” (non-military!) are forced to feel the economic pain everyone else in the world has suffered these past eight years, we’ll continue in our downward economic spiral.

Tell that to my pantry, my Jeep, & my closet. And my linen closet and my fabric stash.

And do you have any idea how p*ssed off people get when they can’t understand the ‘tech support’ person on the other end of the phone? Their heart is usually in the right place, but it is a completely unnecessary struggle & a time waster.

No. No we don’t. Find me ONE American mill that produces towels or sheets. I bet you can’t.

“I was just thinking that the government is feeding on itself or it’s a black hole.”

The gov is feeding on US (i.e. non gov workers, non-welfare)

Problem is: “US” is clearly now outnumbered.

Bureaucracy is predatory at the Federal and State levels. These bureaucrats are an estate unto themselves making their own rules with the force of law and their own courts that operate w/o due process. Pay raises, bonuses and promotions keep these parasites fat and happy.

The bureaucrat needs to fear the citizen, then we will start to move towards liberty. If not, the system will implode and the bureaucrat will lose their salary, benefits, pension and face the just retribution from their prey.

“You left out unlimited access to porn on the job.that’s why you have to wait on hold for 30 minutes to an hour when trying to get information from a government agency.”

Right!

It’s time to outsource all gov telephone services to India, and fire all gov workers who claim they’re “customer service”.

Calls would be taken in less than 5 minutes and It would save billions.

On the other hand, we manufacture far more goods than ever before.

And that's why everything I want to buy, no matter what industry it's for says 'MADE IN CHINA' on it? Seriously, where are all of these American manufactured products? I go out of my way to try to buy them but they can't be found.
