As the U.S. engages in a national debate over the militarization of the police, federal data shows that government agencies charged with largely administrative roles are spending tens of millions of taxpayer dollars to purchase SWAT and military-style equipment.

Since FY 2006, 44 traditionally administrative agencies have spent over $71 million on items like body armor, riot helmets and shields, cannon launchers and police firearms and ammunition, according to federal spending data from watchdog group OpenTheBooks.com.

A cannon launcher? I don’t know what it is but I want one. Hell, I want two. Mrs. L will need one of her own.

“Since FY 2006....”

And the GOP has done...*crickets*

Chalk this up with the 80+ agency/program overlap reports that those in Congress haven’t touched as well. Buy, boy, do they LOVE to call and ‘get out the vote’ on that message of ‘smaller govt’. Now, with Ryan, they’ve gotten EVERY PENNY they wanted until AFTER the votes are cast...

I know a few people who are cops for fed agencies -- they sure as hell wouldn't go door to door confiscating guns.

IMHO, this is simply matter of jurisdiction and petty rivalry. The EPA wants to have EPA agents guarding EPA sites. The Department of Energy doesn't need no damn Park Rangers on-site, they want their own guys. The Bureau of Land Management would feel silly if they had to rely on Forest Service Agents to provide security, and how mortifying would it for the VA if they didn't also have their own armed agents? You get the idea.

So Robert Heinlein pretty much called it dead-on when he predicted that 2016 would be the year that elections died in the US, but the real “Nehemiah Scudder” came from the left

Right! Organizations with bureaucratic totalitarian control need armed enforcement.

There’s more PAY if you’re a fed and have to wear a gun.

Hence, people wearing guns at our expense.

Interesting insight.

However, I am still wondering about the reason why all these Fed agencies such as FDA, EPA, Soc Sec., etc. have to have a law enforcement wing...Very worrisome.

It is because somehow every agency has decided they need their own IG agents capable of investigating criminal acts either by beneficiaries or through corruption of the agency itself. I met a woman that was hired as a criminal investigator (badge, fun, etc) for the Dept. of Education. She spent her days investigating grant fraud and misuse of government funds.

The agencies are destined to be renamed:

Einsatsgruppen FDA
Einsatsgruppen EPA
Eisnatsgruppen IRS
etc.
