Texas Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX)97% has repeatedly defended his eligibility to be president this week, but wondering whether his Canadian birthplace would prevent him from running for the office has been on his mind since at least childhood, a classmate of his tells CNN.

I stand on what I posted.

OK, I'll stand with the founders original intent and the Constitution of the United States of America.

Wow...

So do you tell your children “Honey, you can be anything you want to be when you grow up, just make sure you keep your ego in check. “

Trump of course was nothing but a pious alter boy growing up. No dreams and aspirations of anything involving power, money, or greatness. He just finds himself in a position where power is pushed upon him. He reluctantly accepts this power that the people have obviously thrust upon him.

Cruz of course is a master calculator. He planned this out starting at the age of 11. He’ll go against the grain, fight a lifetime for conservative principles he secretly detests, then once he has been granted the most powerful position of the land, he will take off his mask and show where his true loyalty lies... With the dark master himself.

You Trump folks like to call us Cruz folks delusional, but you may want to look in the mirror if your going to believe nonsense like what is being referenced.

Looking at your post, I just thought about that photo where he was kissing his wife but looking at the camera. It looked so calculated. If you saw a video of it, it was probably someone getting his attention or some innocent explanation.

Look’s like the Liberals game plan of trying to plant a wedge where any crack occurs is working. Even on this platform, their tentacles are amazing. I hope everyone will recognize what it is - Liberal attacks on any perceived wedge...

Candidates answer the questions they choose to answer. They deflect or ignore the ones they don’t want to answer. Especially good politicians, of which trump is an exemplar. trump was trying to create FUD on purpose. Else, he could have easily said anyone of a hundred things to deflect or ignore the question.

Scalia doesn’t know how he would vote.

Actually, voting in US elections, or being Solicitor General of Texas would ordinarily be construed as an act renouncing Canadian citizenship.

I think that is probably true. I do know that on two occasions Scalia has mentioned that jus soli might be required.

You are probably correct. She would not trust the idiots in charge of the DNC.

Having a FS 240 and waving it around doesn’t mean squat.

There is NO settled law as to whether the clause requires being born on American soil.

His FS240 would answer any question about his mother’s ability to confer natural born citizenship. How could she file such a form at the consulate if she had relinquished her own American citizenship? Why should he be asked to submit an extensive genealogy?

Why should he have avoided the question?? It’ not his job to defend Cruz. It’s his job to win a campaign.

“...wouldn’t bother to wonder about that Canadian birth certificate he had and think to himself “Hmmm, maybe I’m a dual citizen”?...”

Because his parents never applied for Canadian citizenship. Google is your friend. He didn’t learn of his Canadian citizenship until later and started the process to renounce it (completed 9 months after he learned of it). He knew he was *born* in Canada, but had no reason to think they automatically processed citizenship for him. They didn’t notify the Cruz family and the Cruz family thought they would need to take some affirmative steps to request citizenship. Since they didn’t, they naturally presumed there was no citizenship.

As to “super smart constitutional scholar”, well he’s quite likely far more knowledgeable on the subject that probably anyone on Free Republic. Then we have the opinion of a congress (that included founding fathers) who a mere three years after the Constitution, wrote the following in the Naturalization Act of 1790:

“...the children of citizens of the United States that may be born beyond Sea, or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as Natural Born Citizens...”

It is the only legislation to use the specific term “Natural Born Citizens”. Subsequent laws have been passed over the years, but it is the only legislation that offers a glimpse into the opinion held by the founding fathers on the matter. Now legally speaking, the only law that actually applies is the law in place when Cruz was born — but my point is that if his circumstance of birth was acceptable to the founding fathers as expressed in the N.A. of 1790, then who am I to disagree with them? Was his mother a US citizen at his birth?

Opinions will vary. But if the founding fathers wrote that it was ok with them, then it’s ok with me too. Folks may not want to vote for Cruz for any reason — from they don’t like his politics to they don’t like the way he looks to they don’t like him running against their preferred candidate. That’s all well and fine. You aren’t required to vote for him. But to say he’s not bonafide when the founding fathers would have accepted him as a candidate with his circumstance of birth - I’ll have to side with the founding fathers.

But good luck with your candidate!

I’m really upset with Trump for bringing this up again .. because now the LEFT believes they have a reason to really take Cruz out of the election
__________________________________

Trump had no choice but to deal with the the eligibility of Cruz to be consistent with the questions that he had with Obama’s eligibility.

Trump is running against Hillary. That is what this is.
If Trump did not discuss ‘the eligibility question’ re Cruz, Trump’s first debate against Hillary would be the birther question... Don’t believe it? Here is a link from Forbes
http://www.forbes.com/sites/rickungar/2013/03/21/birther-hypocrisy-right-wing-has-no-problem-with-canadian-born-senator-ted-cruz-running-for-president/

Many general election voters only remember Trump as an ‘Obama’ birther, right? If he takes the same approach with Ted Cruz (who Trump has stated is probably eligible) it will help Trump defend the ‘Obama Birther’ dust up. Why? There are other politicians and members of the media willing to take up the dicussion, when they decide they don’t like the candidate being proposed. The media reacation will be used as somewhat of a shield. Trump can correctly say he uses the same standard regardless of the candidate. It just proves media bias. Trump will be able to say to a national audience, you ignored this when I talked about Obama, but you all jumped in when you wanted to tube Cruz. And he would be right. Some are currently taking the bait.

One of the nationalist themes of Trump’s campaign is immigration and citizenship. This whole issue will come up again when we start discussing the legality of deporting folks that are here know. Won’t be the last time we are discussing these things with Trump in the race.

Where is the documentation of Cruz’s mother ever applying for citizenship in Canada? Cruz campaign has said she didn’t.

Cruz’s mother was not dropped off a space ship in Maryland as an infant. In this country, we don’t have to produce evidence to refute idiotic conspiracy theories. If anyone has any proof that Cruz’s mother became a Canadian citizen, bring it forward because the Cruz family says she didn’t.

That’s fine, but then he and his supporters shouldn’t pretend that he didn’t want to raise the topic. He did. Or else, he would have given a deflection, or ignored the question altogether.

Many here are defending trump by saying, it’s the reporter who asked the question, trump was just some sort of passive answering machine, he wasn’t actively raising the topic.

I’m saying, whether he thought of it on his own as a topic to raise or the idea was put in his head by another, he thought it was a good topic to address. He chose it, it didn’t choose him.

It was the right thing for Trump to do... Cruz just needs to get out in front of this. The issue is not going to go away until it’s addressed.
