Instances of volcanic eruptions are their highest for 300 years and scientists fear a major one that could kill millions and devastate the planet is a real possibility.
Experts at the European Science Foundation said volcanoes - especially super-volcanoes like the one at Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, which has a caldera measuring 34 by 45 miles (55 by 72 km) - pose more threat to Earth and the survival of humans than asteroids, earthquakes, nuclear war and global warming.
There are few real contingency plans in place to deal with the ticking time bomb, which they conclude is likely to go off within the next 80 years.
The world's most dangerous active volcanoes include Yellowstone, Mount Vesuvius in Campagnia, Italy, and Popocatepetl i near Mexico City.
If any of them or other massive volcanic peaks suffered a major eruption the team said millions of people would die and earth's atmosphere would be poisoned with ash and other toxins "beyond the imagination of anything man's activity and global warming could do over 1,000 years.
The chance of such as eruption happening at one of the major volcanoes within 80 years is put at five to ten per cent by the experts.

Yellowstone would of course be much worse (VEI 8+) but its individual probability is much less...thankfully.

Will it help if I bike to work to reduce my carbon footprint?
If Yellowstone blew.... the US would be gone instantly.
Catastrophism ping!
And one volcano eclipses the global warming scammers
however, remember Oklahoma.
the magmatic stress applied at yellow stone is being transmitted through the strata all the way to faults in oklahoma where the induced slippage is felt as earth quakes
Some tourist will throw one too many rocks in Old Faithful and that will be it. ;-)
I like this comment after the article: “Not to play down the potential seriousness of an eruption, but how long until the man-made volcanic eruption crowd starts clamoring for taxes on the rich?” (made by JackCoyote)
A severe volcanic event, and we might be looking at an ice age. If Yellowstone erupts, grab your ankles and kiss your butt goodbye. (unless you have your own personal Fallout 3 style Vault with a decade or more of food & water)
Will these guys accept a personal bet of say, $25,000 against?
They need to put there money where “their research” is. (Instead of getting paid in grants for making outlandish claims.)

A good way to get arrested and fined heavily...
I’m 90 miles north of Yellowstone and don’t give a darn about ‘the big one.’
Yellowstone Volcano to blow, Dems blame Tea Party - NY Slimes headlines...
We need to bankrupt Western society producing giant, leak-proof tampons to plug these volcanoes and ensure the safety of the human race. No strings attached.
Thankfully and with honor and glory “He’s got the whole world in His hands.” Thy will be done.
“Yellowstone about to blow? Scientists warning over SUPER-VOLCANO that could kill MILLIONS”
This should be regulated — Can’t obamadork issue an executive order to prevent this...I mean, OMG!
Well it’s Bush’s fault don’t you know. Just let Obammy, Kerry, Hillary, Gore, and Lynch make it illegal for volcanoes to pollute-get out the eo pen.
You’ve posted an interesting article so don’t take this personally. It’s not written with you in mind.
This is however a good example of ‘a type” of mindset that is of notice to me.
There are people and groups out there who seem to flock to talk of doom in mas.
Be it the next big killer flu bug, the next fatal communicable disease, the next planet ending space object, the next big tsunami, the next big volcano, or something else, these folks seem to need to find something to fixate on and obsess over it.
There is also the thought that some people out the seem to think the public needs to obsess over this, for some reason.
In this story, there is admittedly a 90% chance nothing will happen, and I’d submit it’s probably more like 99.95% nothing will happen.
Is that you Harry Truman??
Sounds like Powerball odds!
I think I’ll buy a ticket instead.
