Senator Ted Cruz listens to Iowa farmers, supports Renewable Fuel Standard (Ethanol) through 2022

SIOUX CENTER - During a bus tour stop in Sioux Center, Iowa last night, Senator Ted Cruz expressed support for the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) through 2022.

Responding to a question from an ethanol investor from Iowa about whether he would allow the landmark energy program to continue through its current expiration in 2022, Sen. Cruz responded by expressing support for the RFS through 2022.

Senator Cruz also expressed passionate support for breaking through the so-called "blendwall." That "blendwall" makes it illegal for ethanol to expand its market penetration, and I intend to eliminate the EPA blendwall to get rid of that barrier, which will enable ethanol to expand in the marketplace to a much larger penetration to sell more ethanol…."

The comments were substantially repeated at another stop in Cherokee, Iowa the same evening. You can listen to audio of the remarks here. and below.

What Cruz is REALLY for is LESS FRICKING GOVERNMENT. Let the free market work. Get rid of the mandate. Get rid of the subsidies. Get rid of restrictions imposed by the government. Let the market (the consumers!) decide.

EXACTLY, but that's not what America's Renewable Future cronies ate for. They want more tax payer subsidy money in the trough.

Weasely lawyer words. He claimed he was against them. His supporters claim he was against ethanol subsidies and talked smack about others who didn’t bother straddling the Iowa fence.

He has consistently been against subsidies and the mandate, and even proposed legislation before he ever started running for President to end the RFS. He has never deviated from that. And the legislation he proposed had a 5 year phaseout period for the mandate.

Why not phase it out, immediately? Or within the next year...if you're truly wanting a repeal?

Probably because that would be a Bernie Sanders type move. Ol' Bern would be happy to end all subsidies on his first day in office while yelling "$*&# the evil corporatists!"

Unlike Bernie, Cruz knows when the government says it's going to promote ethanol until 2022, investors know they can "take it to the bank" and sink their capital into long-term projects based on such information.

If you really want to undermine all confidence in the U.S. economy, vote for Bernie.

Ditto for the crap about Cruz’s faith.

Doesn’t matter, though. He’s going to win.

In response to Sen. Cruz's statements, ARF state director Eric Branstad said:

Farmers and rural communities across Iowa are going to be encouraged by Sen. Cruz's remarks. He is clearly listening to the people of Iowa and understands the importance of the Renewable Fuel Standard to America's economy and energy independence, as he started the caucus process calling for immediate repeal. While not perfect, this is a big step forward by Sen. Cruz.

That is flip flop going from complete repeal to letting it ride!!

So he is for more use of Ethonol, but says he wants to phase it out. Does he need Iowa votes so badly he will he will sell out the American people?

Ted submitted a bill in March to phase it out. Now why don't you lecture all the other pols and all the other presidential candidates including Trump about what they stand for.

That link still had all sorts of benefits provided by the government - along with the mandate. And while it might not be TAX dollars, it is our dollars that pay for the more expensive ethanol that MUST be put into our gas tanks. (Hey - sort of like obamacare. “We’re forcing you to buy this - it’s for your own good!”

-— Might as well forget it; they’re rolling. Facts won’t get in the way of another pathetic attempt to trash Cruz. -—

You’re right. But there are lurkers out there who can google: Texas Tribune Cruz Perry ethanol

The article is from March and talks about his five-year phase out plan.

Cruz caught being consistent, once again.

Oh please!
It’s all BS—link all you want.

He’s flip-flopped on Amnesty alone about 3 times that I can recall.

You think he’ll really phase anything out?
Keep believing that!

You can not have the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) through 2022 without billions in taxpayer subsidies that Cruz says he is against.

You are conflating two different issues. The RFS is a mandate that says that gasoline must be blended with a particular amount of ethanol. That is not a taxpayer subsidy, but it does distort the market. The ethanol subsidies come in the form of special tax breaks for ethanol producers, but that has nothing to do with the RFS. Cruz opposes both.

Neither Cruz nor Trump is ideal.

But those are our choices ironically...

"I have on my “armor of God” to attack the Philistines of Big Corn. "

Another liberal Trumpster mocking Cruz's faith, and, much worse, the pertinent Bible passage.

Pretty typical, though.

Complete repeal to letting it ride is a complete flip flop.

Are you serious. You ignore what Cruz actually said and instead you quote what the ARF director said Cruz said?

Cruz was for a five year phase out all along. This has been documented for you.

Remove the damn Trump nozzle from your face it's suffocating you.

And he wants to EXPAND the use of that useless substance.

He wants to remove artificial supports AND artificial restrictions on the industry, and then let the market take control. If the market is demanding more ethanol, Cruz is in favor of that - but the market should not be forced to use ethanol. I know this may be a strange concept for some Trump supporters, but it is called letting the free market decide...

Well read the article where he SAYS he wants to remove the blend wall to sell more ethanol.

It’s right there in the excerpt!

Thanks, subsidy vs tax-breaks, one in the same.

Ethanol is not a profitable product on its own.
