You can not have the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) through 2022 without billions in taxpayer subsidies that Cruz says he is against.

You are conflating two different issues. The RFS is a mandate that says that gasoline must be blended with a particular amount of ethanol. That is not a taxpayer subsidy, but it does distort the market. The ethanol subsidies come in the form of special tax breaks for ethanol producers, but that has nothing to do with the RFS. Cruz opposes both.

Ethanol is not a profitable product on its own.
