Coulter: Cruz is not a natural born citizen
The Hill ^

Posted on 01/06/2016 9:51:31 AM PST by springwater13

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter, who has been boosting Donald Trump for president, took to Twitter on Wednesday to declare that Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is not a natural born citizen.

Ann Coulter @AnnCoulter

Same lawyers who said anchor babies are in the Constitution now tell us being born outside U.S to 1 American parent = natural born citizen.

Ann Coulter @AnnCoulter

NYT: Cruz was born outside the U.S. to 1 American parent: "Under the Constitution this makes him a 'natural born citizen.'” Absolutely false

Coulter joins Trump in questioning whether Cruz can legally be president.

“Republicans are going to have to ask themselves the question: ‘Do we want a candidate who could be tied up in court for two years?’ That’d be a big problem,” Trump told The Washington Post on Tuesday.

So what is Trumps change in immigration. An immaculate deception? To what change are you referring?

The only change I'm aware of is his shift on Syrian immigrants.

Coulter joins Trump in questioning whether Cruz can legally be president.

Trump merely said it would be an issue. I agree with him. It will be.

However, if I could write the rules myself, amend the constitution, I'd make only 3rd generation children of parents and grandparents all born AND ALL RAISED FROM INFANCY TO 18 YEARS in the USA eligible for the presidency. (That would exclude Obama, who was raised in Indonesia.)

The idea is to ensure the loyalty of the commander in chief and chief executive to the United States of America.

As it stands, the US born children of US naturalized citizen Anwar al Awlawki are eligible for the presidency.

By current law, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio and Bobby Jindal are all eligible.

If that was a sarcastic remark then ignore the following. If not, read on...

Being a “far superior warrior” doesn’t make her right. Actually from what I can tell, the article fails to give any constitutional-based reasons for Ann’s assertions.

The Constitution doesn’t define what natural-born citizen actually is. So we must look to the original understanding of the term which is also a bit murky.

The meaning of natural-born citizneship was gone over with a fine-tooth comb with Obama. I was in law school at the time and all the research and conclusions seemed to arrive at one being a natural-born citizen if one of the parents was an American citizen. The Cato Institute agrees. I don’t like citing authorities per se as the reason one argument is right and one is wrong, but Cato is authoritative and cites the Nationality Act of 1940.

The same Donald Trump Lovin..... Ann Coulter who said this?

I keep trying to get Democrats to take my advice (stop being so crazy), but they never listen to me. Why do Republicans take the advice of their enemies?

How many times do we have to run this experiment before Republican primary voters learn that “moderate,” “independent,” “maverick” Republicans never win, and right-wing Republicans never lose?

Indeed, the only good thing about McCain is that he gave us a genuine conservative, Sarah Palin. He’s like one of those insects that lives just long enough to reproduce so that the species can survive. That’s why a lot of us are referring to Sarah as “The One” these days.

Like Sarah Connor in “The Terminator,” Sarah Palin is destined to give birth to a new movement. That’s why the Democrats are trying to kill her. And Arnold Schwarzenegger is involved somehow, too. Good Lord, I’m tired.

Senator Cruz "Born in Canada to an American mother and Cuban father

Barry Obama's mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, born in Wichita, Kansas, His father, Barack Obama, Sr., was a Luo from Nyang’oma Kogelo, Kenya.

What is the difference here? Both men have American mothers....foreign born fathers.

If Ted Cruz is not legal....then___________

SCOTUS is a goner. Cruz is needed to participate in putting SCOTUS in its rightful place and also in a position to challenge its unconstitutional decisions. That would be as President AFTER his term as VP under Trump. I don’t think he’ll get there any other way.

Joining SCOTUS would be just one more Justice writing frustrated dissents all the time. Fairly useless at this point.

HEY TRUMP ADVISORS:

I am the only one that has been hitting this point home with the NGUYEN case for YEARS on this site. People just don’t get it. The point is not decided no matter how many legal scholars talk about it or opine about it.

TRUMP: Have YOUR MINIONS LISTEN TO SCALIA and GINSBURG on the topic of Natural Born Citizen.
https://www.oyez.org/cases/2000/99-2071

Give yourself some ammunition when bringing this up.

IMHO, the issue lies on whether his mother was an American citizen at his birth. If yes, then he’s a NBC.

And she was.

Some info claims that Ted’s Mom and Dad became Canadian citizens during the 8 years they lived in Canada.

People can claim anything, but no one has yet provided anything remotely resembling evidence to support that claim. Ted's father did apply for Canadian citizenship by his own account, but nothing supports the idea that his mother did. If she did, she would either still be a Canadian citizen, or she would have had to go through the naturalization process to regain her US citizenship. So it seems like that would be easy to prove, if it were true.

Coulter is campaigning for Trump, so she can be ignored.

Levin is campaigning for Cruz, so he also can be ignored.

See how easily that works?

The Constitution did not define natural born citizen, but many of the framers of the Constitution also wrote the Naturalization Act of 1790 which defined it this way:

The Act also establishes the United States citizenship of certain children of citizens, born abroad, without the need for naturalization: "the children of citizens of the United States that may be born beyond Sea, or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural born Citizens".
