Ted Cruz said during an appearance in Iowa on Monday that thereâs a difference between him and Donald Trump on immigration.
The Texas senator, who is leading the field of Republican presidential candidates in Iowa according to the latest polls, was asked by a man in the state if, like Trump, he believed that all undocumented immigrants should be deported.
Cruz replied, âAbsolutely yes.â
âAnd in fact, look, thereâs a difference,â said Cruz. âHeâs advocated allowing folks to come back in and become citizens. I oppose that.â
Cruz is on a six-day trip around the state to shore up support for his candidacy. He made the remarks during an appearance in Boone. The video of the exchange was uploaded to YouTube on Tuesday. Hereâs a transript of the exchange:
QUESTIONER: Both you and Donald Trump are really strong on immigration, but he supports deporting all the illegal immigrants. Are you willing to say the same?
TED CRUZ: Absolutely, yes. We should enforce the law.
Q: All?
T.C.: We should enforce the law.
Q: Ok.
T.C.: And in fact, look, thereâs a difference. Heâs advocated allowing folks to come back in and become citizens. I oppose that.
Q: So no citizens and all of them?
T.C.: So, if you read I have a very detailed 11-page immigration proposal thatâs on my website itâs TedCruz.org. It was designed with Steve King and Jeff Sessions were the two who sat down with me to prepare it and it is enforce the law across the board.
I believe being here illegally is a misdomeaner for a first offense and a felony for a second/third/etc offense. Felons are most likely barred from immigrating. So I’d think one deportation does not in and of itself disqualify someone from immigrating.
This is how slippery. I took the time to write a transcript of some of Kelly’s follow up question to Cruz. It is stuff like this that should be put in writing. From the Fox video interview conducted on or about August 26th, which I posted #6.
I notice Cruz stutters when pushed. Now not the first time. He has a stutter problem when under slight stress.
Some of the follow up questions by Kelly to Cruz:
Kelly: but that doesn’t sound like an answer. Mr Trump answered that question explicitly last night on the O’Reilly Factor. Will you do so now?
Kelly: listen, but Senator I understand all that, but Senator you outlined your plan, unlike you, you are dodging the question. You don’t want to answer that question. He said he would. Donald Trump said they are all gone under his policy. What would President Cruz do? Do American citizen children, of two illegal immigrants, who are born here do the children, do they get deported under a President Cruz?
Kelly: why is it so hard? Why don’t you say yes or no? ...
Hey dumb a$$, Trump was never an elected official; Ted Cruz is a sitting U.S. Senator who supports H1B Visas! Cruz and Paul Ryan also cozied up to write an editorial to help garner support for TPA.
You Cruz supporters are abject hypocrites!
Great. He can get a medal for tactician of the year. Unfortunately for Cruz, only a small portion of Republican party thinks of him as a leader. It’s hard to be a leader when your fundamental persona is that of a snarky lawyer. This county doesn’t need another one of those for President.
No, what Ted states is exactly what Trump has said.
I agree that it’s smart politics, but like I said this is the second time Ted has said something in private, that hasn’t been said in public.
It’s bad optics for Ted.
As far as the politics of it, the big play here is that if Trump engages Cruz, it gives Cruz media attention which he needs leading into Iowa/New Hampshire... Media attention Trump has sucked up with his attacks on the Clintons.
As far as Cruz Vs Trump on immigration... Cruz loses this fight, right or wrong, he loses it.
I think we could allow them to come back in under the same conditions that a lot of other countries set for immigrants, they have to have a high level of education, speak and write English, have a large sum to deposit in an American bank, have a spotless record with no prior convictions etc and no possibility of receiving andy kind of government assistance, if they cannot support themselves they are deported. In other words they have to be an asset to this country, not a liability. That would stop about ninety nine percent of the current inflow.
This must have gotten you excited today given all the polls Cruz is getting trounced in. Let’s watch you and all the Cruzers whine like babies when Trump fights back. Ted is a total fraud through and through and always pulls his passive aggressive bs on Trump. Trump’s not taking Cheap Labor money but Ted is and that’s all u need to know.
The only one doing the misinterpreting is you, and very, very carefully. But let's get down to what your hero REALLY said. He didn't just say they "have to be" legal; he said he wants to actively EXPEDITE them back.
"I want to move them out, and we're going to move them back in."
Also, about giving them citizenship, "..who knows what's going to happen", and it's something he would think about."
And oh, about those poor DREAMers? "I actually have a big heart...it's a tough situation...we're going to do something..." and more talk about expediting them back if they're "terrific."
LOL
Trump: Move Non-Criminal Illegals 'Back In' Legally, I'll 'Do Something' With Dreamers
meant to ping you to #89
It’s been a tough day for you Catherine since Teddy is getting beaten like a drum in poll after poll by Trump. But that’s ok. I look forward to reading your vitriol throughout the rest of the day.
Trump is on record saying everyone of those things
very informative comment, thanks.
That is so disturbing.
Trump is the one who has been strongest and best about the issue of illegals. It's in the debate more because of Trump than anyone. Trump was taking heat, and winning, on this issue that Cruz ignored while playing the empathy card with Glenn Beck.
To claim Cruz has a better policy or is stronger on this issue is foolishness.
Did you really take a whole moment?
You were pro-Cruz when you signed up about five weeks ago, a few days ago you started to "go sour" on Cruz, and now...well, your "concerns" are noted.
Thanks. :)
And Trump has advocated expediting the return of the good ones.
You know it seems to me, many conservatives are falling for the hype about Trump without actually knowing what he is or has advocated before.
It's also telling that Trump and Rubio supporters are using the hearing footage where Cruz was employing a poison pill amendment strategy when they know exactly what it was intended to do....ie, expose the true agenda for the Go8.
If you want to know what Cruz has been saying, here it is: Build the wall, add more of a presence on the border, reject legalization/path to citizenship, restore the rule of law. And no this isn't a new position for him. Here he is discussing it in an interview in 2011: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0h3Mu8BbjM
I can see that black and white evidence of Trump’s lying and of his core liberalism really upset you.
I understand why, LOL.
CRUZ WHY IS YOUR FOREIGN POLICY ADVISOR A CFR MEMBER? I thought you hated that pernicious nest of snakes?
