Donald Trump claims that Ted Cruz is copying his idea of building a border fence, but the reality may be the opposite. First, here's what Trump says:
...
But if we go back to May 9th, 2013, we find that Ted Cruz was not only speaking in favor of a border fence, he was pushing hard for it legislatively:
...
And what was Donald Trump talking about during this time? Not a border fence, that's for sure. Instead, just a few months earlier Trump was saying that Mitt Romney's self-deportation program was "mean spirited," further adding
...
In fact, as recently as June of 2015 Trump was still talking about amnesty for illegal aliens:
...
So if you go back in time, it was Cruz, not Trump, who first pushed a border fence not just with rhetoric but with legislation, and it was Trump who started talking about the need for a border fence after Cruz started pushing for it. Because up to then, Trump was a pro-amnesty liberal democrat.
That's the problem with criticizing the past history of other candidates when your own history of conservatism only goes back six months. Cruz has not had a perfect history on immigration--he has pushed increased H1-B visas in the past, for example, but he has never pushed amnesty for illegal aliens like Trump did.
So Cruz, who was pushing the idea of a border fence while Trump was still a pro-amnesty liberal democrat, was the first to bring this idea to the forefront and Trump came later. Trump criticizing Cruz on his history regarding border security is just as ironic as criticizing Cruz for not being sufficiently religious.

He who has ears to hear, let him hear.
A fence is not a wall, unless you get those Hungarian patriots to build it. Cruz might have said to build a fence, but he didn’t inspire a vision of a big, beautiful, wonderful, well built massive wall to keep us safe. It’s Trump who is inspiring us to think in ways that will save the nation.
Gates and walls around cities are as old as the Old Testament. Who would claim such an “idea” as their own big new idea?
Will this make them read the article?
Am I the only one who has issues with the headline?
Trump isn’t calling for a stupid fence. He is calling for a border wall.
who cares ???
Just be happy they want one...
Both of them got the idea from Congressman Duncan Hunter who got legislation passed 10 years ago to build the fence...
My Zack Wamp (TN 3rd Dist) was on the Appropriations Committee that voted for the funds...
Where’s Duncan’s fence ???
In the beginning The Donald created the wall, and He saw that it was good (actually GREAT)
So he didn’t invent the idea of a wall, his wall will be better than all other walls combined, with minarets and fountains and gold plating and tall columns and he’ll make the Mexicans pay for it but he won’t owe anything to the Mexicans because he could build it himself if he wanted to and he knows all about masons (small “m”!) and concrete and wall construction and nobody else could build a wall as awesome because ice skating rink.
Who cares?
Is that another one if Cruz’s poison pills? It was not much of a fence or manpower or technology either.
And the North side he called light and the South side he called darkness.
Won’t make a difference.
Windsock Trump is telling them what direction the wind is blowing now not 6 months ago and that is all they want to hear.

Sigh. Why does this matter to anyone? As long as it gets done who cares who thought of it?
The idea of a border fence predates both Trump and Cruz talking about it. The original legislation for building a fence goes back to the Bush administration in 2006.
I heard the Chinese are going to steal his Great Wall idea.
